I think the analysis here is way off regarding the Pok'emon Company's target market. It used to be all about the kiddies with regard to the TCG, but now it seems to me that they're heavily targeting nostalgic adults who are getting back into the hobby and are ready to spend plenty of money seeking rarer cards. The rarity of the alternate art cards is a clear move in that direction, as kids cannot afford to get these cards through here-and-there pack buying. When I collected as a kid, I was able to get my master sets completed without buying cases and such; nowadays that would be impossible.

You're right on the money with how the Pokemon company is targeting their consumers. I personally think they're using certain sets to target both kids and adults. Sets like Evolving Skies and Lost Origin were definitely targeting adults because of how expensive most of the cards are and sets like Astral Radiance and Pokemon Go were for the younger audience because of how easy they were to get a Master Set, plus the cards were affordable. It's like the Pokemon company gives both age ranges a turn to enjoy the hobby.

One in 2-3 cases would be ridiculous but the numbers in the video show closer to one per case. (Average out the 4 pull rates and divide by 4) for the chance of getting one of them.

I agree with you that the alternate arts should be roughly the same rarity between 850-900 packs which is a lot of packs. I'm ready to give up on this set to pull an alternate art. If the TG subset wasn't good, it would be a pretty miserable experience. It's too bad that Pokemon made it so tough for this set.

I saw Danny Phantump's pull rate video and he had some similar numbers for pull rates even though he opened only 2,880 packs from booster boxes. Then i opened 3 Pokemon center ETBs and in 1 of them i got 2 gold giratinas

Be very careful with individual card pull rates because they are subject to a lot of variance on the tail end. It would be better, taking your assumption that each alt art is equally likely, to take the 1/200 pull rate and divide by 4, giving 1/800 for each. Still, an alt art every 5-6 boxes is absolutely insane!

In previous sets if you bought a case you’d see 2-3 alt cards per case. There were definitely some that only had 1 or none but that seemed to be rare. For Lost Origin I’ve seen people open up a few cases without seeing a single alt art.

This was my first thought as well. But if you think about it, how consistent is that? What’s the sample size? That’s what everyone said for sure, and that’s been a close to my own experiences. I just don’t know how accurate it is. Pokémon does have the ability to print “less” sheets that contain Secret Rares and/or Alt. Arts. It just doesn’t seem like they would intentionally want to print more or less for one given set, as Wossy mentioned (the scandal). @Ptcgradio Any thoughts on this?

No you wouldn't. There was no expectation that case=2 or 3 alts at all. Because, as he mentioned, a 6k pack size is wayyyy too small beacuse it a. is almost 0% of the total packs opened and b. it tries to measure an event that may only happen 10-20 times. Meaning any degree of bad or good luck makes the results totally worthless. A case is 216 packs. That would mean the pull rate is somewhere between 1 in 70ish or 1 in every 100ish packs. They'd have to map and seed it to an insane degree, first of all. Secondly, we know that isnt true by empirical data. But most importantly, if that one pack, one tiny aspect of luck in 216 packs, could ruin that, make it unrealistically high or make a hit figure nonexistent. Alt arts are not guaranteed, not does 1 alt art in a box prevent another. In fact, you can get a secret and 2 alt arts in the same box. I highly advise that people don't go into opening product with fictional expectations that aren't even supported by the poor data we've ever had, which is also all the pull rate data owned by anyone other than pokemon

I was trying to reference “seeding” and collating (as it relates to the print process) but failed to explain in a digestible and accessible way, as you did. I would recommend that everyone watch RattlePokemon’s reaction video to Millenium Print Group actually producing cards. Once you see how the layout sheets are designed, it becomes a lot more obvious that pull rates aren’t so inconsistent or random. Social media noise just makes people second guess that empirical data- I get it. The main rumor that I want to debunk is the idea that different products have different pull rates. For the aforementioned reason, this doesn’t make sense- all of the packs are coming from the same production pool. It would take SO much work for production to essentially “seed” and sort packs differently for the millions of different products released in a year. This is a major assumption, but it’s logical, and it bothers me hearing PokeTubers trying to push this idea that one random 3-pack blister is “the buy” and “investable” because of “better” pull rates. EDIT: Booster boxes are an example of a product with relatively “fixed” pull rates to my knowledge, but I just don’t see how production would be able to spend the time and resources to basically “fix” every set of packs for every product.

I’ve opened 300+ packs by now. Chasing those darn Alt alts. Finally pulled one Alt Art yesterday. 🤪😜 Pulled: 3 black gold Pika, 5 Pika V, and Zero Pika Vmax I got a boatload of duplicate V, radiant cards, and yellow border TG cards. Full arts, rainbows, and gold are tougher to pull. Yes, those Alt Art cards are super hard to pull.

It's important to note not every print sheet can have an equal number of each card. So it makes sense if some cards are printed more than others. The difference could be huge if only a few cards end up twice or three times on the sheet. Edit: he covered this. We need the print sheet leaks!

seriously i hate how tpc did this because it totally kills this set for long term investment. in five years nobody is going to want to spend 500 bucks on a booster box that has less than a 10 percent chance of having even a single chase card in it. as wonderful as the trainer gallery is the value of those cards will never match up to alt arts and when you are spending 500 bucks on a box you are not going to care about pulling a 20 dollar card from the trainer gallery. its like i always say nobody buys a base set box to pull an alakazam they do it to pull one of the big three and likewise in five or so years nobody is going to buy a 500 dollar lost origin box to pull a trainer gallery card they are going to do it to pull one of the alt arts. difference is a base set box almost gurantees atleast one of the big three but a lost origins case does not even guarantee one of the alt arts.

I bought 2 packs randomly as my first packs i got of lost origin and got a V card in one of those packs and a trainer gallery in the other. Its all luck what you get haha. Pull rates are a general guide but shouldn't be used as fact imo. 8k packs also is no where near enough packs opened to get closer to true pull rates. Also the pull rates are just localised to those 8k packs as well aren't they? the pull rates could be totally different in a seperate 8k packs. There's lots of ways you could look at it and variables to take into account and i guess unless you open every pack in existence or know how many total cards are in rotation, you won't actually know the true pull rates 100% haha

I sold them both and hope to get them for a cheaper price again when the hype comes down. Or pull them again... But i opened another 24 sleeved boosters and 2 etbs and the pulks where really bad.

Ptcgradio in with the logic and reason again! Agree it's likely the same, if the pull rate for a single card is 1/900, you could easily open a few thousand packs and still not get it. It'd be like flipping a coin 6 times and getting tails each time, it's not super likely, but then do it again for each alt art and have a bunch of people do it. Someone is gonna flip tails 6 times, that's what happened to PokeRev. TCG player only opened around 8000, as a very rough analogy, flip 18 coins for each alt, as a statistical average you'd get 9 heads (9 giratina alt for example) but the sample size is too small so you'll likely get different results each time.

i did find the pull rates lower than in Brillant stars, especially for trainer Gallery and Ultra rares. However was super lucky and pulled the Giratina Alt in my 3rd (out of 4) booster box. Also even though I would have liked another of each I did pull more giratina than other mons (sadly still not enough for deck).

I believe the special art evaluation is incorrect. This is because each alt art is about 1/900 so pulling any alt art would be about 4/900 or 1/225.

Yeah I wouldn't believe those pull rates for the main set alt arts either. The fact they are stating that the four of them have different pull rates seems completely pointless in the first place, but also when you are talking about odds between 1/664 and 1/1080, any slightly reliable information would still require a decent quantity pulled (sample size). So for example say we want a (perfectly reasonable) sample size of 50 cards, even using the lowest rate they have stated of 1/665, they would have to theoretically open at least 33,250 packs and be recording the rates along the way......highly doubt anyone has done that.

I think the distribution of alts is not right in the booster boxes at least it seem like it could be a manufacturer error, their was a post on reddit pokemontcg that did over like 2000 packs and didn't even get one alt in them which is crazy. And just saw on twitter someone was able to pull two tina from one booster i thought that not possible to get the same alt in a booster i thought one usually is different if you get mult alts in a box.

People demanded they printed more and put more product in stores so they did, now that they increased supply their TCG products have been sitting in stores because people pull what they want and stop buying. They lowered rates on chase cards so people buy as much as they can chasing them and now you can’t find lost origins in stores, it’s business. As a collector I’m cool with it, my shiny cardboard is actually rare now, as a person who isn’t rich, this sucks 😂

Wossy, your math is off at 6:30. If each card is 1 out of 900 packs you would pull on average 4 in 900 since their are 4 of them total. That would mean 1 out of every 6 boxes or so. Now I could be wrong but I believe that is correct. Any opinions people?

I do not understand what you are saying about pokemon not deliberately making some cards harder to pull than others. Obviously that is true, or we would all have multiple moonbreons in our collection. It is not as difficult as you think. On their printers, they likely have different programs for each art card. They simply designate a number of prints for each card. So, if they print a billion cards for a set, and they want moonbreon to be a 1/2000 pack pull, they print 50,000 of them. I am sure they take into account both sides of the business, the young kids who are just excited to have whatever pokemon cards are out there, and the picky collectors who buy box after box looking to complete a set.

It's frustrating to see how statistics is sorta mishandled in the hobby. The logical thing to do would be to sum all the counts that Pokerev and TCG Player got for each card and divide by the sum of all packs. The values from that sum will be more representative than either of their individual samples, that's just basic statistics

Just a few points, Pokemon has various outlets through which it sells countless products; they will put their brand on anything. The Fantastic Four shelving could be equated to the way that certain Pokemon were "shelved" in the SwSh games. They're not gone, just cycled out. Additionally, making the statement that they don't make certain cards more difficult to pull is entirely the point of these ultra rare cards, the numbers literally bear it out. Also falling back on "it's mostly kids buying single packs" is a very simplistic and strawman-y argument coming from an adult who knows very well that is not exactly true, and if it is, please provide data. I dont actually mind alt arts being extremely rare. I think they should be that hard to pull otherwise everyone would have them and they wouldnt be special

keep in mind kids collect cards too and making them this rare pretty much Denys the experience to kids. also they could make it so its super hard to get all the alt arts while still making it some what easy to get alt arts if they just add more alt arts to the set. and lets be honest they could add as many alt arts they want to these sets. all it would take is them taking some of the common card artwork and putting it on a full art card. evo skies had alt arts in about 1 in every 2-3 boxes which is like 4 times better pull rates than lost origins but despite that getting all the alt arts in evo skies is just as if not more difficult because of how many there are.

I love your videos, but you are dead wrong about target demographic. Look at alternate art card prices from XY and sun and moon sets. Now look at them in the modern era where adults are the primary collectors now. there is a huuuuge leap in difficulty pulling full arts and alternate arts now. you have too much faith in multibillion dollar companies.
