Well it does make the player feel as hopeless as 5 Space Marine Scouts would be when confronted by a horde of Genestealers
@EonsOfBattle3 жыл бұрын
LOVE lost patrol! It's a great game concept but yah out of the box it's basically unplayable. the rules I changed are the escape pod is shuffled into the last half of the tile deck so it's random when it shows up, giving the scout player a bit of hope with each tile placed. and the second change is only one genestealer can be spawned on a tile unless there is already an infestation token, so it's not SO easy to steamroll the scouts.
@meiswaffle1013 жыл бұрын
I also like the idea of when a scout wins in melee they clear out the entire tile rather than just one but I’d have to test that

They did change the game between the first and second editions to make the minis for the bad guys involved. Those changes took a notoriously hard game for the scouts and made it impossible. Age of Sigmar Crypt Hunters from 2020 tries again with an improved turn structure which moves the placing new tiles step such that it is not right before placing the bad guys. This is a huge improvement and porting it to Lost Patrol still leaves a challenging game but makes it feel more like a chase through the jungle.

I think with these kinds of games (like Tyranid Attack and Spacehulk too) the best suggestion to use is a Star Wars quote. "Never tell me the odds" and it makes for a better experience and well this way, you never know miracles may happen! Mira came very very close indeed.

@triangulan3 жыл бұрын
On the difficulty it maybe feels like it is in the spirit of the old 80s GW games, which are either notoriously hard (unfair even), very random, or both. Thinking Talisman, Chainsaw Warrior, Dungeonquest etc. Given the style of the game, and the limited choices the stealer player gets that you mention, I wonder if the second player isn't really a full player as such, and just a replacement for an "AI" system a more... sophisticated game might have, that the game should really be thought of as a one player challenge, rather than full two player game.
@Bluecho43 жыл бұрын
This is a very good point. There really should be alternate solo rules, for running the jungle automatically. Maybe marking the ends of paths, so you can randomly determine which end is stuck onto the path via dice rolls.

I'd love to see a modded version of this game where the imblance is addressed. Honestly this could be a great 'gateway drug' to the wider GW universe.

yeah, having the scouts only succeed in shooting on a 6 is pretty rough; much worse than their odds in 40k (just 36/216 in lost patrol vs 64/216 in 40k, or 128/216 if they shoot twice, which they usually would at this range). letting them succeed on 5+ (still not as good as 40k odds) might be a decent compromise that wouldn't complicate gameplay any further, but i'm not sure if that would swing the balance too far in the other direction

In the Space Hulk board game, genestealers can rip through Space Marines Terminators within the tight enclosed corridors of a Space Hulk, which is one of the places where Terminator armor is supposed to work best. So, it makes perfect sense that those non-Terminatored scouts have absolutely no chance. Great review of a game I never knew about. I wonder if I can still pick up a copy.
@AFnord3 жыл бұрын
Genestealers sure have fallen pretty far in 40k. In Space Hulk they could rip through terminator armour as if it was nothing, in 40k proper they used to be strength 6, cause fear and have 4 attacks, now they're not even as strong as the bog standard ork boy.
@Jonas_Fox2 жыл бұрын
I had no idea about Lost Patrol! I have Doomsday which is a new take on the same game. You play as three space marines that are charged with disabling a bomb in a hive city. You have a special way to shuffle the tiles so and you put them all out at once so the board is different each time. The goal is to find the codes, bring them to the bomb to disarm, and then get to the elevator, all while Chaos cultists keep flooding in just like the gene stealers. Each of the marines has a different innate ability and there are decks of cards. One deck is for cultist's actions and the other is special abilities for the marines. You can pay a one-off game where the bomb is on one level, or a campaign where the bomb is on the second level. The game is actually balanced, I feel. It's hard to win but completely possible. I bring it over to my mother's and we play when I visit. I say we win 66% of the time? But we work together and it's great beer & pretzles fun.

I wish we saw more games in general, which had a difficulty curve like this. Not frustratingly difficult per say, but I like the idea of a game that is more about seeing how far you can get, instead of the super fine tuned balance of most other games. I think losing can be okay fun if you know that winning is possible, but not very likely.

Those 1990s plastic space marine scouts aren't classics, they're just very old! I reckon their metal predecessors are considerably nicer. Mind you, I think both sets of old metal scouts are nicer than the current plastic scouts too. :-)

The 00s metal scouts ARE way better then the current plastics!
@anotherzingbo3 жыл бұрын
@@ArbitorIan I think that the current plastic scouts would be OK if they had better head sculpts. The '00s metal scouts would still be crisper and better detailed, but this is most apparent on the heads. The Rogue Trader era metal scouts are pretty small and a bit weird but they have a lot of character, plus there's one that's armed with a shuriken catapult and another holding a laspistol (despite having a bolt pistol on his belt) and that's the sort of quirkiness you just don't see in more modern models.

my only complaint (with the game, not you guys) is kiiling any 'lost' scouts. if theyre separated, theyre basically already doomed, but they should still get a _chance._ maybe if they make a mad dash through the jungle, they could find the drop pod or find a bunch of twisty paths that rejoin with the others. also, it serves as a diversion for the 'stealers player. if anything, splitting your party in half should be considered a very viable (but dangerous) strategy.

I barely remember _Lost Patrol_ , but I *do* remember thinking it looked like a cheap cash grab and boded ill for G.W. - I'm glad that my first (and only) impression was at least a little off :) - it looks like an interesting game that would be better if it had greater depth/some _Rogue_ -like mechanics (as an example, maybe the scout player could find single-use equipment cards in the jungle, and a certain number of those cards not used in that game could be carried over in to the next game) (Also, it annoys me that it shares its title with an Amiga game :)
@Bluecho43 жыл бұрын
Another way might be to let players accrue points based on certain milestones in a game. Eliminating enemy pieces might score points, as would destroying infestations or eliminating scouts via separating groups. Give the scouts player a lump of points if they spot the drop pod, so that player can at least get something for _finding_ the exit, even if they don't succeed. The final tally can be used to grant the scouts player a "Minor Victory" if they lost all their guys, but got more points than their opponent.
@youdontneedtoseehisidentif49393 жыл бұрын
Another idea to make the game fairer might be to make it easier to shoot genestealers the more of them there are in a tile (you're more likely to succeed if you're trying to shoot something, *anything* in a mob than you are if you're trying to shoot a specific individual, right..?) - so, for example, if the scout player has to roll a 6 to hit a genestealer if there's one in a tile, they only need to roll a 5+ if there are two in a tile
@JohnnyLeyenda3 жыл бұрын
