Pixel art with unlimited colors is way to go, too many limit it to NES-8bit style. This is super cool, I hope more studio follow this.

I'm curious how the combat will feel in the moment, because here it looks really slow and kind of unwieldy. Everything else looks incredible. The design of not just the characters, but the backgrounds and environments, look very cool.

I would describe it as deliberate, not necessarily slow. Don’t go into it expecting Katana ZERO or The Messenger, this is not that kind of game. Think original Castlevania, or more recently Curse of the Moon. 2D Resident Evil is accurate too. You are an anime schoolgirl and you move and control like one.

Every time I view one of these pixelated retro games I need to activate my scanline generator just to view it without destroying my eyes. This is no exception. But man, it looks sooooooooo much better with scanlines. Games like these should be shown with scanlines activeated by default.

I wish I could give you a truly definitive answer, but I know of no scientific study as to why this is but I know that I am not alone from reading around the on the web as well as having my best friend sharing the same discomfort. In fact, some people report that they get eye strain from using scanlines. I DO HAVE A THEORY THOUGH: After much tinkering over the years and taking note of what causes me strain and what does not, I suspect it has to do in part with now just the eyes, but the brain as well, and how it attempts to interpret what is being visualized. Games that have an extreme pixelated look are difficult to distinguish background from foreground as well as almost everything on screen. I think the brain then sends signals to the eyes basically saying that it can't determine what it's looking at and forces the eyes to try and strain harder in examing the screen closely and what is what on screen and what is going on. If I play back this video at one of the lower resolutions, I experience no eye strain. And to be clear, I have many 'scanlines' and CRT simulators that work in different ways, some do various things like soften the image as well as adding ghosting and chromo blur, while the simple scanlines just provide a solid basis for the image that makes it easier to make out what is on screen. My favorite one to use is a dot-matrix overlay that is essentially just a grid of squares that I can change the size of the squares. It can make my screen look like a old CRT monitor or if I make the squares large, it can make the screen look like a Sony Trinitron CRT TV. I don't even like using the standard horizontal scanlines to be honest. If a game has built in filters, I will usually disable them and use my own since I get a higher fidelity image with some of the CRT benefits. In the case of using the dot-matrix overlay, it helps me differentiate the objects on pixelated games as well as darkening the image as the dark areas of the filter are blocking out more of the light from the pixel elements on the screen. How's that for a response?
