Ben isn't on the island because the island is at the bottom of the ocean as seen in the first episode of this season.

Yeah, I think the idea is that the bomb exploded and the island sank in the 1970's - and an alternate timeline was created from that point forward.

@@victorsixtythree Exactly. I assume the island didn't sink instantly though, because Ben and Ethan were both on the island at the time, and they're both off the island now.

** SPOILER ** According to Lostpedia, Kate's name was never shown in this episode. We know it's on the wall because in a later episode Sawyer tells Kate that her name was on the cave wall but was crossed out.

Jack found the white and black stones in a pouch next to "Adam and Eve" (the two dead bodies) in the caves in the episode "House of the Rising Sun".
