Very interesting video. I worked in the hotel management team from 1972 - 1980. The ski area was one of the first to make snow. I remember the temperature and humidity had to be just right. There was a pond at the bottom of the hill providing water for snow making. One time the air compressor leaked oil causing the snow to come out pink. The snowmaking equipment you show was installed in the mid 70s . We had a staff of ski professional instructors, rental services and sled and toboggan rentals. While I was there the inn consisted of a couple of dozen cottages and the 50 newly built rooms. Our regular room rates were full American plan, 3 meals per day. If I remember correctly we had a ski package for $29.95 per person per day including skiing, rental, and 1 meals per day per person. It was a very busy place year-round. The lodge was a favorite place for many of stars of stage screen & TV. Many Race car drivers stayed there when Pocono International Speedway opened Those were great days. I worked with so many wonderful people on staff and memorable guests

The double chair was a POMA Lift. I learned to ski at SR in January 1982.

That's 100% a Borvig, actually.

Me and my 3 brothers started skiing there in1955. Our father built a cabin on Crest Drive, (still there). Remember a Rope Tow originally. Pretty much skied straight down to keep speed up and very unfriendly old skis and boots. Believe the original name was Hazard Mountian?? At least named by locals. Graduated to Big Boulder, which we thought was huge compared to Split Rock.

Thanks for the comment! I think the original name of Big Boulder was Hazard when it opened a few years after Split Rock, but I'm not 100% sure. I've seen both hills referred to it in the 1940s.

Outstanding video, Avery! We've owned a home in walking distance to the ski area since 1985. We still sled on that beginner slope to this day.

While you can ride the lift that was sold to Mt. Peter, it has been refurbished by Borvig's successor Partek, so it is not all original.

Split Rock was one of those hills that you could get fairly uncrowded runs in early and late. I thought it was reminiscent of those old Catskill ski hills; not much of a lodge and few amenities. I like those kind of ski areas.

Its a shame that this ski resort didn't leave their chair lifts in place and rope tows just for historic views.

The original slope did have lighting and there was night skiing on Friday and Saturday nights.
