"That's why the Sox will never win the world series" was kind of his dad's way of saying miracles don't happen, and ben showing jack that they did win the series was meant to show him that sometimes it's not foolish to hope for impossible things. Even after his dad died their relationship still hedged around jack wanting to be a better man than his father.

The circle is complete, like when we travel around the world, a small world in the end.

They kinda did after Jack returned post John Locke blowing up the sub that Jack was supposed to take (near end of Season 3). THIS was the first time Jack and Sawyer saw each other after Jack saw Sawyer with Kate (in the cages). They did a handshake and then a bro hug. At least that's the version I saw on HULU recently. Now...Sawyer told Jack how Ana-Lucia got his gun...and Jack asked Sawyer WHY are you telling me this. Sawyer says, cuz you're about the closest thing I got to friend!
