It’s really insane how they pumped games out back then. They’d probably lose money nowadays if they tried to do that. But maybe it would also be impossible, it seems like games take way longer to make nowadays. Or they just don’t work their teams as hard. Idk. I would guess making the high end 3D graphics and voice acting and everything is a big part of it
@jonasgagne62722 жыл бұрын
The North American version of SMB 2 was so different because originally it wasn’t a Mario game at all. Lost Levels was the original Mario sequel but the head of Nintendo North America decided against releasing it because it was too difficult and too similar to the original. They tweaked a few things on a game called Doki Doki Panic and released it as SMB 2.

I'll NEVER forget that crazy commercial for Mario 3! The people gathering together to form a huge Mario face!
I was pretty young then. I remember it like yesterday though. Mario. Mario. Mario. Mario! From Space all the people there in NA form Mario's Face.
@anonamatron2 жыл бұрын
I remember the commercial but I wonder about the timing. My dad gave me Mario 3 for my birthday. He got it in California while on a business trip. We lived in Colorado. In Colorado "California" was a magical place that had tons of Nintendo games that we didn't have yet. They had Super Luigi Brothers and Mario 6 and all kinds of stuff. Anyway, I wasn't aware of Mario 3. This was in my hands... A real mythical California game... I went to school and told everyone I got Mario 3. Nobody believed me. Nobody thought Mario 3 existed. Nobody. Next day I brought the instruction book to school to show people I really had it. Probably a friend or two had already come over to see it at that point... Anyway... For the next couple weeks I had a shitton of visitors at my house after school looking to get a glimpse of the fabled Mario 3... My question though, is how did we not know about it? I saw The Wizard in the theaters. We had Mario 3 ads on TV. Most of my classmates had Nintendo Power.... Were we somehow still oblivious? Did they release those things later in Colorado? Remember the rumors at the time were that California had everything way ahead of us. If that was even true maybe companies delayed ad campaigns in Colorado? Nintendo Power and surely The Wizard should have been on the same schedule as anywhere else... Anyway whatever happened, I got a Mario 3 out of nowhere and it blew everyone away.

Seeing the rotating platforms in such an early build, especially knowing how buggy they ended up being, surprises me. I had always assumed they were a late addition given how glitch exploitable they are.
@codydfwn2 жыл бұрын
Well, I'd say this is perhaps the closest Mario got to Sonic (in the sense that they're both on equal grounds; 16-bit and yet rushed code that makes for glitches lol) as the entire game becomes exploitable with glitches seeing as you can glitch it into writing/injecting your own code inside the game or just write anything in to get desired results. Warping, etc... Crazy what speedrunners figured out! I guess it makes sense for SMW as this is one of those Mario games that they were rushing as launch titles. Later Mario games at least seem a bit sturdier after the 64 era as Nintendo even says Sunshine was rushed (which they lament supposedly) and that's the last one I've seen any real glitches from as of recently. World, 64 and Sunshine all being launch title Mario games.

I remember soon before it was released, they had some game play footage on NBC nightly news. I was blown away that in the level where you crawl on the fence, that instead of the door swiveling, the whole screen swiveled, so you always saw Mario's back. I was so disappointed when that didn't happen in the real game. There were several other changes in the video that weren't in the real game. Someone has to have a copy of that broadcast

I remember when I saw Super Mario World at a friend's house on his SNES back in early 1992. He had an NES that I played on with him the year before and it was in our early school years at that point so knowing of the NES and then the SNES seemed to be short length of time not knowing about the NES system already released during the late 80s in my area of the world. So the SNES was a really big deal at the time during my childhood knowing that my parents were too low to middle income in order to afford a system like that. Only Nintendo they got me was the Atari 2600 console with games like Donkey Kong Junior and Mario Bros on that old system. To be honest, Pitfall on the Atari 2600 was the closest Mario experience that I could get on an Atari and it was like that for a long time until I was old enough to save up pocket money to get a N64 a year after it's initial release. So during the NES and SNES years as well as the Master System and Mega Drive/Genesis, those experiences I only had at friends and cousins houses at the time during my childhood.

I had to save money for it.. but wait... my mom could just buy it now and I play it now and pay her back later! I get a weekly allowance... Just don't give it to me for like 18 weeks or whatever it was! Yeah! So, I learned about saving and credit cards from buying consoles. I save my money now and I don't use credit cards.

Just like with SM64, I would *love* to play the beta version of SMW! I'm pretty sure it changed far more then SM64 did. Unfortunately, unlike with SMB3, nearly all of SMW's beta levels were deleted from the rom before release. Trying to access any of them just leads to a boring test level. There are some bits and pieces of beta levels, but nothing at all exciting really. If the beta was discovered and dumped, we'd be able to play all these scrapped levels that existed before Nintendo deleted them all. Most would probably just be early versions of existing levels, but there may very well be some unique ones like SMB3 has. Personally, although it's super duper close, I'd give SMB3 the edge over SMW in terms of which game is better. Graphically, SMW is obviously superior. It also has Yoshi and secret levels. However, SMB3 beats it in just about every other way. Item inventory, more level themes, items that can be used on the world maps, and at least double the amount of power-ups.
@veevendetta34482 жыл бұрын
Hard to say because SMB3 is the Prequel of SMW. SMB3's Item Inventory should of been passed over but it would of made SMW way too easy. Btw SMB3 has way too short of levels compared to SMW.

It was originally intended to introduce Yoshi in SMB3, but they cited hardware limitations. Ironically a hack did manage to make much of Super Mario World work on an NES, including Yoshi. The hack was ok, but definitely not as colorful or having the gameplay of it's SNES counterpart. So the decision to move to the SNES hardware was a great decision. It is much like how Zelda 3 (A Link to the Past) had originally begun it's development for the NES, but was later moved to the SNES as well. Both games benefited from the better graphics and better gameplay, resulting in very well polished games that became legendary. Could we imagine Super Metroid being developed on the NES? Nope. Not going to go there.

extra levels on this one are very hard, IDK why DKC2 gets called one of the hardest games, and one of the hardest to 102%, but if you want to 100% mario, imo, it's harder and requires just as much execution. All comes down to a single bonus level on mario, and a single lost world level in DKC2. I can probably clear dkc2 easier, including animal antics, but they were needlessly cruel w that dk coin. Still tho, those cutters on the mario bonus level get me so much more frustrated. It's sick like early mario maker type level. I'd beat the other level mentioned 2-3 times before I can beat this one once bc it pisses me off.
