Usually people are not aware how big of a challenge long term data storage actually is. The best we have are still rock carvings and parchment codices which might last a few hundred to thousand years under ideal conditions (DNA is an insanely stable molecule for its complexity and enormous length so artificial DNA might be a way and jpegs and mp3s had already gotten encoded in aDNA strands and successfully read out again - but it requires complicated tech to do so and all the knowledge of the world won't be of any use if the required tech to read it out didn't make it through the centuries as well and the chances are pretty damn low) - and it got worse and worse over time: We already sit atop a mountain of digital data storage we can't access any longer even though they are just a few decades old - and some backup CDs I've burned and stored away couldn't get read out again a mere 10 years later although they never went into a drive, were stored dry, dark and with moderate temperatures. If society would collapse right now the overwhelming majority of our knowledge would get lost within only a few generations - the regression of the Imperium is pretty realistic in light of the lenghts of time we speak about here.

@FormerGovernmentHuman7 ай бұрын
The Romans came very very close to developing a sustainable power source just before the fall and the dark ages using water mills. They used it to power saw mills with hydropower and were developing other uses for it, coming close to some ground breaking stuff. In first century AD there was a “steam engine” that could provide torque but was never really put into any useful purpose. Believe it was called an aeolipile or something like that. The burning of the library of alexandria was also a devastating blow to human knowledge. It is quite incredible to consider what the world would be like without the dark ages. Likely steam engines and the Industrial Revolution could have occurred centuries if not nearly a millennia before it did in our timeline if not for the the fall of the west and the proceeding dark ages. And you are right, we could very very quickly lose centuries of knowledge in a couple of generations if we can’t find a solution to preserving it. One thing that is quite depressing as well is we are so focused on producing goods to meet demand right now with no concern for longevity, for the most part products are made with the intention of failing, breaking or falling apart in a certain time span to encourage you to go out and consume more products. Almost everything in our modern day is only produced to last just long enough to not be a complete scam, hence why products made before the 80’s and 90’s are likely to still be around for another generation or two while items we use right now probably won’t make it past a couple of decades.

Great point! I think this is one of the things that W40k gets simultaneously wrong and right: the narrative of a past imperfectly recorded and dimly recalled is one of the things that makes w40k so compelling. Your point just underlines how quickly our stored history and knowledge is already rendered unrecoverable. At the same time, 40k writers seem to work against this view. The recent lore in novels and campaign books seems to hit the wrong notes constantly. The Imperium is consistently shown as having far too much knowledge of it's own past. In one recent Black LIbrary novel a character-a regular Imperial citizen, not High Lord or similar-makes a casual reference in conversation to Drakan Vangorich, who was alive in M32. That's 10,000 years before the present of the characters. To underline this, it's like me making a reference to an individual from the Stone Age-and you getting who I mean! The same goes for the repeated references to 'Shakespire' and quotations from 20th century poets and the like. Even when the Lion returned, why did not one person ask, "Who is Lion El'Johnson?" Other older books where Imperial citizens couldn't name a primarch beyond Sanguinius, or had only a dim idea of what they even were felt far more convincing. Rick Priestley said a while back in an interview that the 41st Millenium was originally chosen as the setting because it was so insanely far in the future that all knowledge of humanity's distant past could be assumed to be lost. He bemoaned the subsequent detailed documentation of the Horus Heresy and the primarchs etc saying the setting had lost what he referred to as the concept of 'deep past'. For me it not only robs the setting of mystery, but it just feels deeply jarring and at odds with what feels more likely.
@geofff.33437 ай бұрын
Yeah, it's truly staggering. There's so many scales on which storage of information balances. Carving it into rocks, especially immovable ones in an area protect from erosion would probably see them last the longest, but they're difficult to access and impossible to transport. Oral traditions have drift in the information being relayed. Books made of acid-free paper or vellum/parchment are a good compromise for longevity and transportability but they will eventually require copying and could present another chance for drift. And the more modern your method of transcription the more complex the playback method becomes. It's what makes video game preservation so difficult. Sure you can emulate the software, but the intended experience was on an arcade cabinet or a system you wired into your TV with coaxial cable.
@yaldabaoth27 ай бұрын
No, that's not the best we have. Just laseretch your data into a sheet of gold. It will stay that way (unless physically destroyed of course) forever. Now, having the means of extracting that data again might be difficult once you were bombed into the stone age, but it would still be there anyhow.

You can have nice things, but they have to come with an attached (expensive) price tag that puts pressure on people collecting the army previously to 'upgrade'. We get the Primarus marines and Guilliman out of nowhere, a weirdly progressive move for the state of the Imperium, which is almost by definition crumbling and decaying otherwise. Lion El' too. We aren't ever going to get anything published telling us how things are improving outside the tabletop, because they can afford to be grimdark there for practically free. No STC uncoverings because those simply don't add marketability to the story, unlike the super-duper space marines and chaotic good mad scientist does. Worst part is, all these weird lore titbits are gonna stay around because there is NO way they'll do to 40k what they did to Warhammer Fantasy.

@luetin, my guy. Around 18:50 you're justifying what you do. Here's your word: HISTORIOGRAPHY. Not the study of history, but the study of how we record history, what is saved, and what we glean from even the most terrible, but in context, sources.

Haha I came here to say exactly this. I would recommend you read into this idea Luetin, if you haven't already. I've not heard you refer to it.
@duncan15445 ай бұрын
It's relevant because it refers to how history should not be read as if the writers of history, or historical artefacts, reflect "objective truth" or some such idea, but rather acknowledges that the author or the object reflects a particular point of view/ one particular angle on any given phenomenon. Historiography tries to resolve this by acknowledging the framework of historical understanding adopted by the author, because that enables the reader to better understand where they are coming from.
@gragsmash7 ай бұрын
i have an idea for a setting for a 40k RPG adventure. Basic setup is a dark age of technology colony - the colony STC made the decision to cut off all communications during the war with men of iron, lest it fall to whatever corruption was causing the problem. somewhere during the age of strife, an unnamed cataclysm befell the central colony, and what was left were the agricultural and mining outposts. over time they aren't even aware where the original city was, and it became a myth to the people living there. during the crusade the emperor's children roll in, and the planet's population become compliant with relatively little discord - they are happy to be reunited with humanity. the legion moves on, with iterators and a small techpriest contingent left behind to get the place ready for productivity. something something heresy, and the colony's location is lost. the techpriests locate the original colony STC and make contact with it. Over time, they set up their central forge at that location, and revere the STC as the "machine god" the techpriests are highly secretive about their machine god, and give out gear to the world as needed - often producing highly specific goods for members of the world's PDF - to the point where a military family will have their own customized ancestral lasrifles, decorated over time to reflect that family's achievement. the STC also engages with the help of the techpriests in some warp shenanigans that make the world highly difficult to find. how exactly this works is a detail i haven't really fleshed out.

It might just scale up the Gellar field STC to stomp down on warp fluctuations locally

I would imagine an Inquisitor getting curious and investigating the planet. It might end better than expected if the Mechanicus are smart about it.
@gragsmash7 ай бұрын
@BrotherRoga my plan from an adventure design standpoint is that the stc has whatever killed off the original city bottled up in a cave somewhere. When people start investigating it might let it out again. I hadn't decided if that was a flayer cult or pox walkers or what. From a lore standpoint I can't let the stc survive this adventure and become known to the galaxy. One way or another it's gotta go. So it has to be paranoid and reactive

"They haven't made one of those in twenty thousand of your years, I honestly did not think any more of them existed. Please gather around the artifact and take a defensive position.... Your presence will complete the display." After all, Trazyn's just "Diorama Dave" from down at the shop without the spending limit - "It will look awesome in my collection" is all the reason he needs for pretty much anything. P.S. My favourite example of "lost worlds" in 40k is that of Urdesh and the Sabbat Worlds. The region has a long and bloody history during the Heresy, but afterwards, weakened, it gets forgotten by the Imperium, while the region gets overrun by Chaos-worshipping cultures from the Halo Stars. Urdesh develops its own unique culture parallel to the Mechanicus' as a result of its priesthood being purged during the Heresy. When the region gets reconquered by the living saint (!) Sabbat several millennia later, people have completely forgotten the Sabbat Worlds have ever been part of the Imperium, treating them as a wild frontier of sorts. This history can be pieced together from Adeptus Titanicus (Crucible of Retribution and Traitor Legios) and the Sabbat Worlds Crusade background book. It's really cool.

I don’t see why having a few female Custodians inserted into the history is causing so much anger. My facebook feed is stuffed full of people losing their shit about it. Why does it matter so much?

@@sickofwashington What's ''magical' about it? There never was a statement that they didn't exist in canon. This hardly even as large a revealation as custodes in general becoming active outside terra, or primaris marines, etc.

Funny how you cover this book right now. Not long ago I ordered some used books and got the original edition of deathwatch instead of some other 40k rulebook. All stories were somewhat funny to read - they all felt kind of naive and pieced together like the lore of most other games. Somewhat like the first Perry Rhodan stories. Especially considering the quality and amount of lore we have today, this short story was a real standout to me. It fit in the picture we have today, it has far-reaching implications and does in no way feel odd or outdated like most of the other stories did. Your take on it is great as always. Thank you.

This is such a good video! They could say that "variants" in the lore are cannon because of the existing cannon. The inquisition has a department for dealing with time travel. So they have been "fixing" time to keep it on the "correct" corse.

STCs for me have 3 parts. 1 part, most common, is like the Wikipedia and bunch of Blueprints. Tons of variations of batteries, vehicles etc. Then there is an AI/search function/complier that can select/modify/calculate needs/specs. Then there is the least common. A hangar sized 3d printer/constructionFab building.

I know that this script was likely written over weeks and you couldn't have known what was coming, but the section on lore is somewhat amusing to see given how it came out right as GW took the formal stance that lore just doesn't matter and they make no attempt to keep things internally consistent now. Then again how could anyone predict they'd more or less admit that they hold those who care about the lore and buy Black Library books in contempt and only don't close black library due to the fact they would be violating feditiary duty to the shareholders given despite their best efforts it's still profitable.
@eyespliced7 ай бұрын
Oh no, something you don't like but most people just shrug about and move on happened. Bruh, there have always been women space marines. why would custodes actually be different? (before you clutch your pearls, it's true. there used to be female space marines figures, and neckbeards also got mad about it then and they didn't sell well at the time (80's) and GW removed the casting molds from the production - this is real, and happened before "the lore" that's being so violated was even written) If you don't like it, you could stop playing warhammer. _That'll show em!_ I personally know several people who are way, way more into warhammer than i am who are super excited about it. I genuinely don't care, and given how dogshite GW has _always_ been about lore continuity, I'm just not sure why there being female custodes matters in the grand scheme of things.

Believing what lore you feel is true fits extremely well for a faction based war game (with many equally diverse sub factions and sub-sub factions). Players will be able to choose a team to play in the game that fits what they think is the truth. It's actually a really good design of writing for its purpose.

A forge world isn't rediscovered as much as it reenters regular space after a thousand years in warp but only 100 years in regular time. If you haven't read a book about what happens when the Inquisition and Mars start arguing over potential for new technology versus a planet that has been completely corrupted by Chaos this book is a great start.
