I love how Sanderson uses that night of Gavilar's feast as this crucial moment around which the whole series revolves. I remember reading TWOK and after the two prologues being rather confused. It was my first exposure to Sanderson and was not expecting that the Szeth perspective was more than just some initial worldbuilding and explaining the magic system. Sanderson really is masterful.

There's a ton to unpack from the get-go, starting from the first page (the Prologue to the whole series). We learn about Thunderclasts, Dustbringers, we see 2 Heralds in person and are told there are 8 others, we learn that they are effectively immortal but doomed to alternate between Damnation and Desolation, and we see the exact moment when Taln is betrayed and the Oathpact corrupted. Not to mention seeing all the Honorblades in one place before we're even introduced to their (arguably lesser) cousins, the Shardblades. A lot of this stuff doesn't make a lick of sense until pretty deep into Oathbringer and some of it, arguably, Rhythm of War.

Another detail (Dawnshard spoilers): in Navani's pov we see that a bunch of grain for the feast has been infested with worms- just like how it happened on Rysn's ship to try and get her to turn around. So maybe the sleepless knew what might happen at the feast and tried to stop it.

Sanderson's is a BEAST at this. All the Easter eggs are just mind-blowing. And the prologues ACTUALLY have a purpose. My goodness, I have read so many novels where the prologues are just put there for the sake of. I love how slowly, with each passing book, we start seeing who Gavilar REALLY was, and Sanderson has accomplished this without him even having a POV chapter. It's incredible. Plus I'm enjoying the reversals we see. We start TWOK thinking Gavilar was a victim and the Parshendi were the perpetrators, but as we go on, we see that it was the other way round. Gavilar's obsession with greatness made him start messing with things that shouldn't be messed with. Plus he was an all round jerk who used and manipulated those close to him to get what he wanted. After all these books, it's hard to believe that back in TWOK, I was anti-Parshendi. Now I love them so much. It's so unfair they got the blame for everything and were almost lost to extinction for something that wasn't their fault! Ugh, I HATE Gavilar so so much. But I still can't wait for his prologue in Book 5 so that we finally get a grasp of everything. I love that each prologue shows that the causes of the war are more complicated than we thought. So many factors came to play that if one were to go back in time and change even the smallest thing, a huge butterfly effect would erupt. I mean, the Sons Of Honor, the Ghostbloods, the Heralds, Venli's selfishness, Eshonai's devotion to her people's freedom, Jezrien's Honorblade(which was hinted has a big role to play in the back five books. I mean, why couldn't Nale touch it???? And what was with Dalinar seeing Nale's thoughts?! Sanderson doesn't just put these things without intentionality.), Szeth and his Oathstone, a bunch of Ferruchemists as well. At this point, I won't be surprised if Nightblood was also chilling around at the party 👀😂. Seems like this Feast was less of an assassination and more of a huge Cosmere master plan that required so many pieces to come to place perfectly and at the right time. Hmm, someone else is pulling the strings in the background...

I love the "reveal" that the Jezrian, Mighty King of the Heralds, has gone so pants-on-head insane that he spends all his time in a drunken stupor, spouting gibberish and giggling over his little "joke" about "Can you see me?" I also like that the Heralds' modern-day insanity is hinted at in another Prologue (Jasnah's from WoR, I think?), where you hear Nale and Kalak having a hushed conversation where one of them keeps making remarks like "Are we getting worse? I feel like we're getting worse."

Given that we know the Stormfather had been instructed to give the visions to a potential Bondsmith, it's possible Gavilar was actually on his way to becoming just that. Which sort of makes sense; conquering the heck out of everyone is technically 'Uniting' them, whether they like it or not.

Which, is also what the Stormfather, believes to be right. At least initially. There are lots of scenes where the Stormfather is rigid and unbending when it comes to mercy or understanding, using the example of the effects of a storm and the unstoppable-ness of Nature itself. So, at that point, the Stormfather probably sees Gavilar as the storm and everyone else as just being caught in the storm. It isn't until Dalinar that the Stormfather realizes that he can have his own free will and make conscious choices.

Great video! One additional detail I picked up from the prologue chapters is that Gavilar appears to have life sense. You wouldn't pick up on it unless you've read warbreaker, but he is able to seemingly magically catch both Eshonai and Navani eavesdropping on his meetings, so he is already invested to some degree, though I'm not sure how. It might be one of the ways he was attempting to gain immortality. Also the SOH make no sense to me now, their stated goals were to bring forth a new desolation to bring back the heralds. But as Kelek is their leader, and he is in fact a herald, then that makes no sense at all. What are the SOH about exactly? Did Kelek just create them to find a way to leave roshar?
@LostinDiscovery
@LostinDiscovery 3 жыл бұрын
If that's true then that's a crazy detail, I love it! It is very similar to how Zahel notices Kaladin coming up to his room in WoR as well. I feel like you're right in the fact it may be Kalak's weird way of scheming to get off Roshar but it's too early to say I guess??
@mrothk01
@mrothk01 3 жыл бұрын
@@LostinDiscovery Oh it's true, I wasn't sure when he did it with Eshonai, but when he did it again with Navani... Here is the exact quote: "Gavilar suddenly stood up straight and glanced toward the doorway, though Navani hadn’t made any sound." That jumped off the page for me, and it was the second time he did it. I suppose he could somehow also be a tineye, but I don't find that likely. Somehow, he is invested though. Rysn gained lifesense when she became a dawnshard as well.

It crazy how important that feast has become! When reading WoK it was just an amazing beginning, nothing more Why would Thaidakar want Gavilar dead? I hope we get the feast from Gavilars perspective in book 5 I need answers
@NemisCassander
@NemisCassander 2 жыл бұрын
Given what we know of Thaidakar after the end of Book 4, and information from the Prologue about Gavilar's experiments, it's pretty easy to theorize that if Gavilar had been successful, he'd have learned how to ship Stormlight offworld. That or Voidlight. One or the other. This would be against the Ghostbloods' plans. The other point is that we know that Shallan thinks (and I believe she's correct) that the Ghostbloods seek Ba-Ado-Mishram as a solution to the problem. It's heavily implied that Gavilar had BAM's gem on the night of the feast. That would make him a target of the Ghostbloods (and recall that Jasnah's prologue talks about how she is trying to prevent assassins from targeting her family). If this follows, then the most likely gem as the one that holds BAM is... the one Gavilar gives Szeth. Which means that BAM's gem is currently in Urithiru. Which... is concerning, when you think about it.

I was reading an article about Brandon and the Cosmere that was supposed to be kinda casual but in the first damn paragraph it just casually mentions one of the biggest reveals in the whole story that came near the end of Oathbringer. It blows my bloody mind that Sanderson can tie the things from the 4TH book to the first scene of the 1st book and surprise the hell (or Braize) out of us. Axwindeth was definitely doing something that Gavilar didn't know about. And there's definitely more to come from the people and conversations we only hear mention of at the feast. You got me with the identity of the homeless drunk, too. Ugh!! To be a fly on the wall of Sanderson's writing room...! I will never reach the level of his imagination that is royally, colossally, incredibly higher than my own.

EXCELLENT video! I feel like a lot of these questions were already answered in Rhythms of War. Particularly, that there are TWO reasons these factions (Ghostbloods, Sons of Honor, etc) are involved in the return of the desolations, the return of the heralds, the transferring of void spheres, etc. And they are: 1. because certain entities want to get off their systems and travel the cosmere - but they cannot; they're TIED to them. I speak mainly of Thaidakar (his real identity and real system) and Kelek. Thaidakar being the leader of the Ghostbloods, and Kelek being the leader of the Sons of Honor. 2. to find out how to transport Investiture across the Cosmere and move it off-worlds... because whoever figures out how to do that, will become the absolute richest. And they thought the ability to move voidspheres off of Braize would lead them to understand how to achieve it. Now, I don't think Thaidakar cares about being rich, but he does desperately want to get off his world. Once book 4 ended I kind of viewed the entirety of the Roshar/Braize story as an experiment for these offworlders and people in-the-know. Time will tell!!

Another awesome video mate. Id love it if you did a QnA stream with some Stormlight chit chat so we could all throw some ideas around. Trying to get one of my housemates to read The Way of Kings so I have someone to talk to about it, but its taken him months to get 3/4 of the way through and then he still has 3 bigger books to go, as well as the rest of the cosmere stuff. Its awesome to have channels like yours around so I can get my mind thinking about all the stuff going on. You're doing a great job. Much appreciated. Have a good Xmas and New Years!

Thanx for the summary! Gavilar must have been a card-carrying Ghostbloods member. There aren’t many groups that can travel to other planets. I think that there are still some clues to be discerned from the destruction of the human planet Ashyn. Maybe they had a big conflagration there with the anti-Lights and normal Lights. Etc.

Do you remember how the guy in the library was playing with the plates and the bow to show the shape of cities to Jasnah and she already knew this trick? Later, the same method is used to create the anti light spheres but it was presented as something new. So, there are remnants of the technology being used in theology instead science which has to rediscover it all from scratch!

Most Cosmere stories: "this place is nice, I wanna own it" Everyone in Roshar: GET ME THE FUCK OUT OF HERE FFS
@TheFrdw
@TheFrdw 3 жыл бұрын
Gavilar’s power was always knowledge and it looks like he knew that every god no matter how powerful was controlled by a human from the heralds to Odium. RoW hints at his plans to bring voidlight beings back to Roshar from Braize but he ultimately planned not to destroy them with antivoidlight, but to control them for the greater war just like Odium. I believe he wanted to hold Odium or another shards power and use the Rosharian “training grounds” to continue conquering the cosmere. There definitely some economics in there with bringing light between realms as well. It would show a lot of growth for Gavilar to conquer in more ways than brute force and show Thaidakar’s influence on his plans. Also it would be cool to see Gavilar as more of a mastermind instead of just a potential Rayse 2.0. And it explains why Taravangian was trying to first subvert his plans, but ultimately ended up taking Gavilar’s place. It could also explain why Wit was so ready for this chain of events if he had been planning for it to be Gavilar gaining Odium’s shard since Taravangian isn’t a huge difference. Perhaps Cultivation became involved because of Gavilar’s death. Soon after she prepped Taravangian and Dalinar against Rayse.

From what I understand, the prologue are in reverse chronological order. As in WoK prologue is the last event of the night while RoW prologue is the the earliest (so far). So, Eshonai and Jasnah meet Gavilar after Gavilar has already met the Heralds. And Eshonai sees/hears Amaram (and Co.) in the room. Gavilar tells them to go out for a bit so that he can talk to Eshonai alone. After this Jasnah comes across Gavilar's room as Amaram and the rest are leaving.

Its so cool how Sanderson takes us back to this one night so many times and from several different perspectives and it all fits together nicely. I always wonder just how much he had envisioned when he began the Way of Kings since this would be a lot to juggle if he was writing more like the "gardener" that George R R Martin does. If I had to guess he had a lot of this stuff roughly realized from the beginning and has just slowly paid it all off over the last 4 novels. He said somewhere that a scene near the end of Rhythm of War has been in his head for over 10 years and he finally got to write it. I have a feeling to which scene he was referring but anyway its so cool having all this stuff paid off after so long. I just finished RoW last night and it was fucking incredible. I read several reviews recently that were unsatisfied by Rhythm so I was a bit worried that it was going to fall apart and that Sanderson just couldn't continue the epic awsomness any further, that he had reached his limit. Let me just say that those people are so very very wrong. I was literally tearing up at least three different times around the climax and after it near the end. There wasn't the typical "Sanderlanche" this time, it was there but a bit more subtle. At least compared to the previous three climaxes of the other books anyway.
@LostinDiscovery
@LostinDiscovery 3 жыл бұрын
Mate, I’m absolutely with you. In my opinion RoW continues the incredible quality of all the previous Stormlight books and even surpasses them in some aspects. I believe the scene Sanderson was referring to was Kaladin saying the 4th Ideal but I’m not 100% sure.
@dookieshoe2905
@dookieshoe2905 3 жыл бұрын
@@LostinDiscovery Yes, Kaladin saying the fourth ideal was my thoughts as well. Though I wonder if it might have been Taravangian's final encounter with Odium instead. That would be a huge moment that was likely planned as well so its hard to say for sure. I am more than satisfied with Rhythm, I didn't want it to end. It seems that many people don't like all the characters suffering from different mental disorders, especially Kaladin's depression. I understand a little that it may be tiresome for some people to hear him constantly down on himself instead of being the perfect ideal of a hero at all times. That is what makes it so great though, there is no magic bullet to cure depression and its so much more impactful when he finally does speak the ideal at the end. I actually teared up when he was speaking to his brother, it was such a powerful moment and made it so much better when he finally accepted that he won't be able to save everyone.
