Metallica shook us because they weren't just fast and loud, they were precise. They sounded sharp, and they told interesting stories from unique perspectives. The first 4 albums are special because they were OURS. They weren't on the radio, we didn't have internet, it was word of mouth, it was organic. They were genuinely talented musicians that didn't show fear or shame, it was an amazing era.

@@lisemzarate4029 I'm pretty sure I was at that same show. One Step Beyond was just a few miles from my house. 17 years old with an all-ages metal club down the street, that's pretty much all I did on weekends. I lost count of the number of times I saw Vio-lence and Forbidden. Death, Primus, Body Count, Nuclear Assault, Sepultura, ... (By 91, Death Angel changed their name to The Organization. A useless detail, shouldn't get in the way of a good story,)

15:43 Ryan said “when it’s song came out, it probably took the world by storm” The reality is that Metallica couldn’t get any air play on the radio at this time. They were way to hard for even the hard rock stations in 1984. Their commercial success came way later. The only radio they had at the time was a handful of college stations. It was the fans passing around their records and tapes, and showing up for the shows that kept them going.

Even as early as 1983-1984 Metallica took the world by storm despite not getting radio play. They got some mainstream success as early as the mid 80s and much more by 1989. Just saying it's still accurate to say they took the world by storm in 1984.

None of the music I listened to from the punk of the early 80s to thrash, got mainstream publicity. it just wasn't important, loads of us still were into it. But we didn't need them, this was our thing, a parallel world of our own.

I had been a loyal Iron Maiden fan and in 85 this chick I was banging snuck me into her bedroom to listen to Metallica for my first time. They didnt get any radio play at the time because of the corrupt payola system but the fans of metal got the word out and soon everyone couldn’t get enough of Metallica. Great decade for music and a great time to be alive, young and rocking your f**king socks off. Life was a lot simpler, sex, drugs and rock and roll before all were corrupted in the 90’s.

I was at donnington 95 when they headlined. When they came on stage i was 20ft from front row center stage. 1min later, i was about 100ft off center and my feet did not touch the ground because 100,000 people behind had surged, crushed everyone and lifting us off our feet so we just flowed. That was just the start of their set after 10hrs of similar bands. I was exhausted at the end, barely able to stand. I just made it back to my tent, downed southern comfort and woke up a 6am bouncing when an airliner flew over the tent at about 100ft. The next evening i nearly got booted out a pub because was still so hyper.

James Hetfield is well-known to have an "iron wrist" in his right arm because the technique he's using to pick the strings known as "down picking" is hard to play consistently at the tempo he plays. So there is definitely some difficulty in what he's doing here. And the downpicking makes a lot of difference in how it sounds.

Yeah Mustaine influenced their sound alot in the beginning. And he knowing Metallica took some of his riffs made young Mustaine a force to be reckoned with. But still I love both bands.

Dave's contributions shouldn't be overlooked, but in the grand scheme of things, he was in the band for like 5 minutes. He was credited for the riffs he came with, it was the solos on the first album that Dave was upset about... this is pure James and Kirk (and Cliff and Lars on arrangements) , as Kirk wrote the whole "Die" part while still in Exodus. Gotta love it!

@@StuPedassol And I believe Dave had same reasoning as what led up to the point when he got kicked from metallica to when he kicked out Gar Samuelson and Chris Poland of same reasons after Peace Cells album

They aren't difficult rifts, but they are all down picked, and they are masters at it. They not only do it for this song, but for their whole catalog, and playing that quickly downpicking for an entire concert of quick downpicks is damn impressive.

What I love about the videos you guys put out is that you review songs I’ve loved for 20 years, and when I get sick of them, you perfectly explain why I loved those songs in the first place, and put them on my playlist once again. Keep up the good work!
