This concert also had AC/DC, Pantera, The Black Crowes, and E.S.T. at the Tushino Airfield in Moscow, just after the collapse of the Soviet Union. During the Soviet Union there was a general ban of both albums and concerts from the west, so Russians only had black market or bootleg albums. So this was the first time most of them had ever seen anything like this.

Funny that you mentioned security. The military there (around 29 000 soldiers +/- according to the drummer Lars Ulrich) was supposed to be there to keep the wild crowd in line, and make them behave. But they ended up drinking, partying and rocking out themselfs! If you watch more concert footage from this concert, there are military helicopters hovering just above peoples heads. Lars calls it still today,a surreal experience and a total mindf**k to even watch over again. (Pardon my french) Here is footage included of some of the soldiers that simply doesnt give a F: Pantera - Cowboys From Hell (Live, Moscow '91) [HD] Maybe not the best video to showcase the mayhem that was going on. Because the soldiers went onto beating the crap out of the civilians at one point, wich had Jason Newsted and Metallica reacting before Black Crowed came on: The Black Crowes - Stare It Cold (Live in Moscow 1991) (HD 60fps) This shows perfectly how violent and ruthless the military was, then the next time you saw many of them, they were partying and drinking with the crowd,helmets/hats off. There was no in between with them,it was either or lol. This one of my favourite Metallica songs where many of the soldiers started losing it in the crowd: Metallica - Harvester Of Sorrow - Live in Moscow, Russia (1991) [Pro-Shot] I think they started out really aggressive, where even people from the production of this concert had to calm them down through an open mic,and from there on out they just thought "f**k it,lets party with them!". AC/DC came on when the dark had settled at night, and it was just all party vibes all over. One insane concert in every way,and even Brian Johnson adresses it abit. I recommend watching AC/DC close the concert with For Thoose About To Rock (We Salute You) You can use this video: "Monsters in Moscow 1991 Pantera, Met, AC/DC, Black Crowes". Starts at 1:11:36 with Brian saying a few words in front of the performance, good video quality.

For perspective on the crowd size, this is like selling out Madison Square Garden, plus the entire population of the state of Wyoming... 3 times over. That number is based on 1.6 million people, the official headcount, but conservative estimates also include nearly 200,000 gate crashers as well, which are not included in that figure. The show, if I recall correctly, also included AC/DC, The Black Crows, Pantera, and Electro Shock Therapy.

Metallica were said to be sh**ting themselves about going onstage to this audience.
