@@jarinhartley5668 Its both. Phase 90 is on all the time in the riff, while the Flanger is on for the end part of it. Its the one specific reason the end of the riff sounds like it does. Given how complicated it can become to turn the Flanger on and off for just three chords, i suspect the pedal might have a momentary switch (press and hold, the effect is on, let go, the effect is off). This is only my speculation tough.

Eddie played through a phaser foot pedal. In addition, he had a combination of amp settings, guitar pickups, and picking style that made his sound very percussive. This debut album came out in 1978 and no one had ever heard that guitar tone before. Revolutionary!

Besides, I never said or thought Eddie himself paid for the phaser pedal. When "Van Halen" (the album) took off in the summer of '78 (I was there), it was almost (but not quite) the revelation that "Boston" (the album) was in '76-'77. Recording technology was improving by leaps and bounds in the late '70s, and "Van Halen" sounded like nothing that came before it. That's a fact, Jack.

I know where I was I bought the cassette cassette head just came out pretty much a 1978 and my brother had one in his car and I heard of this new van called Van Halen everybody was telling me about the cassette or the album so I bought it and within one song I knew that it was something special and that guitar player or something I never heard before you got a remember we were listening to like Elton John’s Philadelphia freedom foreigner renegade Styx evolution really much softer type of rock music but when Eddie hit it was on real and I’ve been a fan and his death really hit me to kind a hard you know for somebody that I didn’t even know but I just appreciate it so much

As a guitar player of 35 years (playing since I was a kid), I can tell you that the guitar playing and sound on this album was revolutionary. It was the biggest change in rock playing and tone since Jimi Hendrix a decade prior. It completely changed the game and rock music, guitar design and amplifier design into the 80s and beyond.

Eddie's guitar tone is legendary and millions of guitarists try to copy it,for decades.The ''Brown Tone'',they call it,is a combination of a flanger/phaser effect pedal,with some chorus/delay,plugged into a Marshall Plexi amp,cranked to eleven and Eddie's modded ''Frankenstein Strat'' guitar,which he build himself. The guy pretty much changed the way,people play guitar,in the late 70's/early 80's.He made the Floyd Rose Tremolo,popular with all his whammy bar tricks and also 2-hand finger tapping.Everybody and her mother,in the early 80's was running out to get a modded Superstrat with a Floyd Rose.

No, it's the phaser and pinch harmonics that create that sound. Also, it's not layering rhythm and leads. I can tell from their other videos they love when guitar and bass are distinctive. Eddie is great and who played it but those are the main elements. They also love a wet reverb sound.

No one has discussed the guitar tone in the comments - the guitar tone is pretty much legendary at this point - its known as the "brown sound" - there's a few things they did to make it sound so monstrous. So the amp was recorded with its back to the wall which created this slap back you hear in the intro. Then they messed around with the reverb - they kicked the reverb right up on the left speaker and the right speaker was much drier - not great for headphones but if you listen on stereo speakers, it sounds INCREDIBLY expansive and powerful. Add on some flanger and a tad a phaser into the mix to get that evolving timbre and you have a very very expansive sound. Of course, the amp and distortion amount had a big part but this stuff was so NEW - there was nothing else like it at the time and coupled with the otherworldly guitar playing - this shit was unbelievable. They were also VERY charismatic live - there is an infamous tour where they opened for black sabbath - and every night they just DESTROYED them - it was something people had never heard before and it was absolutely groundbreaking. Of course, Black Sabbath won the test of time battle overall but you can't understate just how amazing Van Halen were.

That "tone" change at the second verse is when Eddie goes from back and forth from power chords to harmonics (both guitar picking techniques). And for the vocals, David Lee Roth is just wonderfully crazy. The whole band did their parts wonderfully and uniquely.

This is a highly effected guitar tone. Eddy used a phaser and/or flanger into modified amps. (if you really care, he was using one Marshal JTM45 with a large resistor across the output, run on a variac at 90 volts (instead of 120), INTO another Marshall JTM45)

I don't hear phaser or flanger except at the beginning of the song. The main riff sounds pretty pure guitar into amp one. What makes it different though is that nowadays lots of technical guitarists especially have very processed tone without dynamics. No difference with if they are picking hard or softly. Not everyone of course, but that seems to be the trend nowadays.

They only mentioned the effect at the beginning of the song while the modulation effects were still being used, which is why I mentioned them. Now, with the lack of dynamics, we can actually blame Eddy from a much later time in his career - the Peavey 5150 - with all six gain stages engaged, the signal is overdriven into compression (which makes sense if you watch a high gain preamps waveform - it looks like the waveform out of a compressor.) That amp is one of the go-to amps of modern metal and hard rock.

Its been a while since I listened to Van Halen, now I'm gonna have to find my old albums. Hot for Teacher would definitely be a great song to do. The opening drums were made to sound like a Harley. Interesting fact- the guitar Eddie Van Halen is holding on the back cover to their second album is in the casket with Dimebag Darrell, the guitarist from Pantera (R.I.P.)

David Lee Roth is one of the great showmen and band frontpersons in rock - you have to see him perform live to fully appreciate the vocal delivery. The dude is 100% attitude and maximum swag, and really helped elevate arena rock from a performance to a show or even spectacle. Backed by stellar musicians they really were a revolution in the music of the day

Historical note: In 1978, my brother and his friends went to Cincinnati to see Black Sabbath....and, ....this "newer" CA opener band called 'Van Halen'. My bro was 18...I was 13(mom didn't let me go). Upon returning....my brother says: While Sabbath was good...."that opening band was phenomenal!!!" The next day, he went out and bought the Van Halen 1 debut vinyl.....and returned home to let it rip..(on dad's turntable & speakers). He & I were mesmerized... "What are we hearing?" ...there were no videos back then, so I had to "imagine" this group...and; they vaulted to the top of my favorite bands (see ya Steve Miller, EJ, BTO....etc, etc....) Wow. A game-changer.

Black Sabbath...was popular...and that's the band my bro saw(VH opened). He was blown away, because almost every Hard Rock fan was blown away, the first time they heard VH play. So, the brother immediately went out, bought the record and played for his little brother. Sounds like a pretty typical story to me. Nothing unbelievable or fantastic about it. And most importantly, the teller of the tale is not glorified in any way. He didn't discover VH by himself at a Sabbath concert. He didn't even go to the concert. His brother did. His mom made him stay home. One thing that is very typical of bullshit stories is that, they usually make the story teller look good. They are bullshitting you, to feed their iwn egos. A great story teller usually tells stories that are mostly the truth, with a maybe a few splashes of bullshit thrown in to add color. A great story teller knows that if he looks bad in the story, the story will usually be funnier and it will lend credibility the story. I, me, my stories typically contain a lot more elements of bullshit than, this guy, that guy and my brother stories contain. I love telling stories, so I know what I'm talking about.

I love this! NON-guitar guys openly sharing their clear fascination for old school guitar mastery. Eddie V H tuned his guitar a half step down, added his famous “brown sound” distortion, then added a MXR Phaser guitar pedal. Then guitar was ran through one channel and reverb from that was panned through the other speaker. On top of all that, his Marshall was so loud it literally blew the hairs on his arms. Badass sound! You MUST hear the entire album. It’s like :38 long. Just short and blazing.

Eddie's attack also changes the tone up. When you guys mention how it changes during that second verse, he's muting notes with his palm ("palm muting") and then not. He was also known for rolling his volume knob back slightly, which would also alter the tone. He was a master at rhythm dynamics. Great reaction, guys.

Eddie bought an amp destined for the UK. The voltage there is 240v here in U.S. it's 120v. This created a low voltage situation. He liked the sound, bought a variac and the rest is history.

The way you guys reacted to this song was the same way people reacted when this album came out in 1978. It was groundbreaking. It was innovative. It was something that wasn't heard before. The Rock music world was shaken up when this album came out. I can see in previous comments how in detail the guitar sound was developed. And to this day Eddie Van Halen keeps experimenting with his sound. Every time a signature EVH amplifier comes out it comes with a new feature or a different setup. David Lee Roth to me is just the greatest Hard Rock Frontman of all time. He may not have the greatest voice but his swagger, stage presence and antics are one of a kind. That stage presence combined with Eddie Van Halen's guitar virtuosity made the perfect formula for success. You can tell I'm a HUGE Van Halen fan. Eddie is one of my greatest influences as a guitar player.

The Guitar tone was achieved by taking an OLD Marshall 100 watt head and cranking more voltage through it than it was rated for. It caused the amp to run at the edge of frying, which it did often. He had several that he would rotate in and out as he fixed them. No one had gone for this "Brown" sound before this. Eddie Van Halen was an innovator of the time. Now he makes amps that do this by design (EVH 5150 amp)

He actually reduced the voltage in the amp with the Variac rather than increasing it. In the early days he said he increased the voltage so that people trying to copy him would blow up their amps but in recent years he has admitted that he actually reduced the voltage.

YES YES YES. This was a great time. They were using effects, and as a guitar player EVH started a sound called " the brown sound". This song uses a phaser pedal. Cool sound that takes the notes and kinda sends them in a circle.

The tone that Eddie got was some stuff he made, not stuff that was out. He actually took a voltage converter and plugged it into his amp and controlled the volume of the amp by regulating the voltage on it, and not to mention the advancements he made with his guitar alone.

I've been HOOKED - on both guitars and Van Halen - ever since. Kudos to you guys to totally get the infectious pure JOY this brought to the ears of so many kids back in the '70's. We had never heard anything even close to this prior to Van Halen I coming out. This sound, the guitar tone, a singer mimicking Al Jolson and old blues greats with long hair and doing kung-fu moves in a heavy metal band - back in the day - this was INSANE. Dudes, that whole album is amazing. Please listen to the whole album. Eddie Van Halen used various effects to color his tone. But, the core of his tone was a guitar that he homemade, an old Marshall "plexy" turned all the way up, and a variac. A variac is a device where you can change the hundred twenty volt that comes out of the wall to something lower or higher. He set the variac somewhere between 90 and 100 volts. It's referred to as the brown sound. But it's not just about the magic of his tone it's also the magic of the man. Eddie Van Halen invented many guitar tricks that are now commonplace. He did for rock and metal what Jimi Hendrix did in the sixties. So when you hear these amazing ferocious guitar tones think about the fact that Eddie started in the late 70s. So everybody who comes after him owes him a great debt. The crazy thing is how wonderful the drumming and the bass is too. Obviously those are amazing too. And David Lee Roth's vocal styling was so full of humor and emotion and Swagger. Watch some old videos of DLR he would do crazy backflips and acrobatics on stage. Van Halen is four guys but they make it sound like 14. I think you will find that every song on Van Halen's debut album will give you chills down your spine.
