I think the heavier second half is to compliment the lyrics entirely. If you listen to them closer, the first half has him being the victim of a selfish person. In the 2nd half, Post "Ascension", he's now admitting to doing the same thing to others. I think the fact the 2nd half is heavier is probably because he acknowledges it's not entirely a good thing he's ended up this way. And even though he's "Ascended", he's lost some of his goodness in the process of protecting himself. Pretty common stuff in modern dating Lol, but masterfully put into song.

I'd say it's half correct. The most well accepted theory about this song is that it's a song between Vessel and Sleep, the first part being Vessel and the heavy part being Sleep, and the scream is specifically Vessel. This is backed up by his performance just recently where the lights change from red to blue depending on the part of the song that's currently playing.

With Sleep Token you cannot separate the lyrics from the instrumentals. There's usually a clear journey going on, especially in longer songs like these. This particular song goes from: sadness --> blaming the other person for the pain --> deciding to grow and ascend as a person to get back at the other person --> realizing you can't and lash out because of it --> accepting the harsh truth of who you truly are --> falling into a pit of despair because you finally looked yourself in the mirror and there's no longer a way to unsee it. Yeah, this might just be their most depressing song if you pay close attention. It's kinda heart breaking.

I love this song and this is my first video of yalls I've ever watched. After hearing you say it felt like the second part is forced and that it could've been 2 different songs I thought about the entire composition and thought why didn't they make it 2 different songs? In my opinion it feels like the song is his mood throughout a day thinking about the person he's singing about. It begins with a ballad when he first thinks about them, then the R&B is him distracting himself with other worldly things but doesn't last for long until he breaks back into his "ballad" feelings. Then ends it with the real way he feels just screaming "you make me wish I could disappear". Music is subjective but thinking of the song this way made me appreciate it more.

The lead singer has a long history of Soul and R&B on top of just incredibly good vocals in metal. I think this album shows that the band is capable of more than just metal, flexing their chops as musicians more than trying to define genres. The longer songs on the album are more like stories that use different styles to convey emotions/phases in life and the progression of the band lyrically, and stylistically, across all their albums.
@Bonzoso21 Жыл бұрын
Sleep Token is growing on me, but I do feel similar to Ryan with many of their songs in that he either forced in a metal part or he forced in an R&B part. I love a lot of crazy prog metal bands that blend genres, but with Sleep Token it always seems like the shift in genre comes after an ambient interlude, like Vessel knew he wanted to get from point A to point B but couldn't figure out a musical path between the two so he just holds down a synth pad for 20 seconds before coming in hot. But even so, those smooth hooks find a way into your head for a week at a time.

I think there is an “against the grain of the suede” feel when bands/groups like Sleep Token “switch out”. But we are at a time in this world when there is a lot of impulsive changes. I am a metal head since 1988, but I enjoy and respect a lot of R&B/Synth type music. I tear this band down in every facet. Lyrically, absolutely phenomenal. This “Vessel” guy can sing the phone book and I’m in. This album was the third in an album trio. This chapter is closed. I’m curious, creatively, what the next material will sound like. I’m sure they are listening to the reviewers and critics and that will be the driving force of what their music does next. Hardcore metal, head bopping R&B, or else wise a completely different direction to show their versatility. Nice review gentleman!

I think it sounds like 3 songs bc I think this is a Sonic representation of a relationship-the ballad is him starting off wistful, melancholy & nostalgic (slow piano)…that puts the narrator into the headspace of the relationship at its best (the trap)…the djenty metal is the eventual outcome of that relationship-anger, rage despair. Then once that’s exercised, he comes back to being melancholy. It’s a sonic metaphor

As a 40+ year old I'm happy for the youth to have acces to all the music without being funneled into genre's or what recordlabels think that should be populair. When I was young, you were either a punk/metalhead, pop-fan, r&B/rap fan, or EDM fan, and liking more than of these genre's was looked down upon. Sleep token and ghost (in a lesser degree) are the first bands (that I know) that embrace the fact that you don't have to stick to a certain genre and core audience expectations to be succesful.

Really fantastic reaction. As someone who listens to R&B a lot, this song absolutely blew me away when I heard it on release. Love hearing ya'lls takes on that aspect of it, very on point thoughts and deconstruction.

To me heavy guitar riffs can blend well in this style of music if it works with the lyrical meaning of the song, otherwise it sounds sort of all over the place. I like when the heavy metal parts accentuate what's happening in the lyrics like a lot of good songs have done in the past. Master of Puppets was a metal song that did that super well in traditional metal.

As a newer fan, I deeply appreciate this album. Their previous album "This Place will..." holds a special place in my heart for feeling like it existed in its own dimension, but "Take me Back..." is a great listen

This is my current favorite track. I got kinda burned out on the tracks that were released before the album dropped. I do want to go back to those eventually. But I have all their stuff and replay ability is high.

So u guys were the first reaction video pair I ever watched. Sleep Token is soo perfect for you guys. Old metal head who has been renewed by the whole deathcore movement. Bands like this make me believe metal is taken over the world..music wise I mean

10:45 you are speaking so much truth. We need more musicians creating based off that pure inspiration. I hope you're right about that being the future of music!

“Aqua Regia” is soo smooth it’ll make you buy a recliner having you sipping on a glass of courvoisier, smoking the finest cigar, reading the local newspaper with a monocle on.

The transition being a departure from the other song was very deliberate for storytelling. It is a change in mindset. In the beginning it is questioning why the person who left is the way they are. The vocals for the scream are "You're gonna watch me ascend." That part of the song is looking at the beginning and saying, "I am done with you, I am moving on, and you are going to see this change." Not saying it didn't feel a little forced, but just trying to show the intent behind a dramatic change.
