I think Sleep Token are the freshest metal act to come out in years! The genre was definitely in need of some revamping.
@carryingfire286

Hard disagree. They sound super contrived and cliche to me. Its that shaky, cliche voice that pops up on every electronic pop song now. Some cliche, uninspired de-tuned guitars pop up with a piano then drop out and back to the cliche pop voice. I really dont see anything special or unique going on here at all. IMO this is regressing metal. Metal is one of the most creative, exploratory genres out there. Having a big band who minimizes themselves to big poppy hooks and cliche riffs isnt the "revamping we need in the genre" IMO.

Definitely a band worth coming back to. This song doesn't showcase it so much but the drumming on tracks like The Offering or Alkaline is really amazing. This song is more chaotic than a lot of their work, it's by far their most experimental. Their style bounces around a lot but not usually this much in one song - also the funkdown at the end wasn't an outlier, they use R&B elements a lot. Amazing band once they really bury their teeth in you

Sleep Token is a very experimental sound that is going to go entirely genre switch to fit their own aesthetic and artistic needs. Looking into the lore of the band you'll discover they are an entirely anonymous act and the theme of it is that Vessel (the lead singer's persona) is the "vessel" of the god Sleep, with their concerts being called Rituals. None of their songs sound quite the same, and you're going to get something different out of each song. Truly a band with a sound like no other

I'm completely addicted to this band right now. Absolutely phenomenal metal, best I've heard in many years [life long metal fan, 40+ years old]. This song is fantastic, not remotely too 'experimental' as is being said here.

To stay within the same vehicle of expression limits creativity. Post Metal and or Avante Garde Metal in itself is the fusion of many genres and experimentation is primordial. Music should be celebrated regardless of genre.

I discovered Sleep Token in October of 2023 and I am obsessed with them! Fresh and dynamic progressive rock vibes with an unpredictable edge!! As a 61 year old drummer it’s great to still be so deeply inspired by a new band! Bought all three CDs since I am old school.

I love your analysis of this tune -- and all of the stuff you do. I'm just getting into this band and this was my first listen to this song too. Thanks for taking your audience along! I'm a musician and crave those transitions, odd-meter and other complexities. I'm 52 and have been studying/composing playing music since I was 12, so I've heard a lot of music. And my musical brain loves the complexity. But I also love a filthy funk in-the-pocket groove and crave that too. Snarky Puppy is a favorite. Duke Ellington said (?) "There are two types of music -- good and bad." Hence, there's something for me to love in all genres.

To sum this song up and the band in general, the are very similar to Deftones, heavy, soft, sexy, dreamscape and down right awesome. But yeah... not the song i would of recommended for you guys to start on. This is an eclectic mix for a single song. Most of Sleep Token is multiple genres over an album not one song. This was them flexing and showing how they can make it all come together in one song. Check out "Altantic" "The Love You Want" "Alkaline" or "High Water". PS: Ryan, those are high pitch screams not growls brother.

Fellas, I think the big thing here is that you two lost the groove with the heavy sections.. It's there, and its groovy AF, its just harder to "catch" because of the way they play around the beat instead of on it. The whole song is in 4/4. Sometimes, if I don't catch the groove, and I'm feelin lost, I'll try to find the time signature by snapping my fingers in 4/4 at first to see if it's in a "normal" time, and that helps alot. You guys still got a little growing to do into metal, but we all have that learning curve at some point and start to hear things differently than we used to. Our music knowledge grows, so do the things we enjoy about these songs.. such as catching a groove that's not easy to catch.

Bro, this is 100% for LD 50. That album I had to damn near study to enjoy, but once I learned it there wasn't a second on the album I didn't like.
@chriswooton2637

@@AspiringSpaceWizard That's just on a first listen, and only sometimes. The more complicated rhythms become less complicated over time. Say, a couple of years ago, I could never enjoy anything about Animals As Leaders.. but now, I start to appreciate them, I might have to snap my fingers with their songs because we're talking about extremes here, but with Periphery or bands like that, I don't have to anymore. I catch the grooves easier than I used to, but it's just a good suggestion for people who are only used to traditional song structures. It helped me, and now I can enjoy off-kilter type stuff as much as I enjoy the "normal" structured music.
@chriswooton2637
@chriswooton2637 Жыл бұрын
@@lllslinklll Lol, I could see that for LD 50. It's kinda like an adventure that was hard to conquer but once you do, you feel attached to the record. I'm like that with certain songs from Juggernaut. Heavy Heart bugged the shit outta me when I first heard it but now I couldn't imagine it being any other way.

This song took me 3 listens to Get It. Like for most of my first listen, I felt a bit overwhelmed by the changes. then the funk-breakdown rewired my brain and I immediately relistened to it 2 more times and now it's in my top-ten favourite songs 😂 also, if u love Vessel's clean vocals, I recommend Atlantic and The Love You Want, also their newest singles Granite and Aqua Regia!

Listening to this song, it sounded like love. When he said, “It sounds like an awakening”, that moment in the song felt like when two lovers make love in the purest sense. The feeling of bliss and love and pure happiness in that moment. It was amazing the way I felt the song in that way.

I was turned on to this band last year and this they’ve become one of my favorites. The mystery of the lead singer, the prog metal/ ethereal / pop sound is so cool! They cover Whitney Houston I wanna dance with dance somebody on their first album. Bloodsport (from the room below) is one of my favorite. I think you would be really surprised by it.

This band I think is definitely reaching out to a broader audience. Anecdotally, I posted on my FB feed the video for Chokehold and talked about how enamored I am with that song, and my sister's friend said she loved Sleep Token. This girl is a choir singer and I seriously doubt she has any other band in her playlist that would be considered metal, based on what I know about her while I was in HS band with her. She is who I talk to when I want to ask questions about singing, and I have a feeling that this vocalist plus some of the more "palatable" / poppy instrumentation you find in the songs allowed her to like a band that also mixes in metal. With her being a singer herself, I bet the vocalist just sucked her right in. The vibe of Chokehold sucked me in, but also the vocalist has just one of the best voices in rock I have ever heard.
