"I wrote the song at a friend's house in New Jersey. I was pretty depressed at the time because our gear had just been stolen, and we had been thrown out of our manager's house for breaking shit and drinking his liquor cabinet dry. It's a suicide song, and we got a lot of flak for it, as if kids were killing themselves because of the song. But we also got hundreds of letters from kids telling us how they related to the song and that it made them feel better."

This is, hands down, one of my absolute favorite songs from them. This got me through so many dark times in my teenage years. If I was feeling like I wanted to hurt myself, this song went on, I’d pick up my guitar and just go. By the time it was over, I’d be ok. This song has so much emotion and meaning to me wrapped up into it than it just being “some song”. It was made in 1984 and Metallica back then didn’t have access to the best of the best. This was only their second album and it would be another few years before they hit the big time. The reason it’s so polished and clean sounding is mainly because Lars and James are, or at least were back then, absolute perfectionists. Everything had to be perfect and done exactly right and sounding amazing or they did it over. This was True from the playing, to the recording to the mixing and mastering. BTW, when this album was written and recorded, James and Lars were around 20. Let that sink in....they were 20 years old and writing and performing at that level. It’s mind boggling... Thank you so much for doing this song, it’s saved my life on multiple occasions....

Krieger Koenig I really, truly appreciate that, thank you. I’m 44 now, have a wonderful wife I’ve been married to for 23 years and have a 21 year old daughter. While it all hasn’t been smooth sailing, I’m extremely grateful I made it through those darker years and came out the other side. Metallica was a huge part of that happening and in January of 2009 I actually got to tell them that in person on the Death Magnetic tour.

Gotta disagree yo. Don't get me wrong, it's an incredible live version, but it would be these guys' first intro proper thrash Metallica. The studio version is nuts, but the groove and feel is still perceptible through the wall of noise, better for analysis and reaction

Fade to Black is the reason I picked up a guitar. I took guitar lessons for two years and played lead while my teacher played rhythm at a guitar recital when I was 17. There is a real magic in listening to the song, but the experience to play in concert with someone else is nirvana. I don't play as much these days, but when this song comes on I have to air guitar and sing along with the solos. Anyways, Yes - Roundabout.

This song has so much emotional power and though it has all the Metallica trademarks of melody and aggression and it sweeps you up, it's also deeply personal for those who have the 'black dog' of depression always with them. There's a depth of emotional connection you get with this song that you might not get if you don't experience that darkness.

1984 dude, back in my teenage years when nobody else but metalheads knew who Metallica was, when all us metalheads felt like we were in on some awesome secret that the rest of the world wasn't hip to, "And justice for all" and the song "One" brought Metallica into the mainstream and a lot of fans felt betrayed that Metallica sold out to the corporate world, myself I felt like the world had finally caught up with Metallica and the musical tastes of people began in the 90s to become less of a group mentality, less putting music into neat little boxes of genres, I personally thank Run DMC and Aerosmith for their huge step in the 80s that broke the glass ceiling
