This mode helps address a problem I've noticed which is that there's no stakes in the early game. It's simply impossible for anyone to win until they get access to larger numbers of more advanced units, so the first phases of the battle have no real chance of victory or even affecting the outcome of the battle. This game mode opens up access to larger numbers and more advanced units immediately, so that the early game no longer feels as superfluous and irrelevant to the outcome of the battle.
