One major top tip for others is use metallic sharpies on the foam as it makes it a lot easier to see than the standard black one (as its normally black on greyish black foam). Sounds simple I know but makes it easier.

Is there any particular reason for not using Barge cement? That stuff holds so much better than hot glue. Great tutorial!
@LostWax7 жыл бұрын
I agree, Barge is the strongest thing out there, however, the fumes are not something you want to breathe, and as I cannot control how well people ventilate their spaces, and there are lots of kids making my patterns, I would rather recommend supplies that are less toxic if I can. I have actually been very surprised at how well hot glue actually works once you get used to the techniques. I think I actually prefer it over contact cement now. The other great thing is that if you want to change something, you can use your glue gun or a heat gun to reheat the section and take it apart.
@argophontes7 жыл бұрын
That seems a perfectly reasonable explanation! I tend to do all my gluing outside because of exactly that. Great job on the video!

Is there a way to make the print out a perfect fit? Cause I have really skinny arms 😪
@LostWax6 жыл бұрын
Hmm, this is not an easy pattern to size before you print it out, due to the way that arms don't have standard width to length proportions. The good thing about having skinny arms, is that you can always add some soft foam on the inside to tighten it up- and the look works because you've then got this big strong mech arm. If you do want to resize the width of the pattern, I recommend making the basic arm using the pattern that closest fits your arm length. Once you have the basic arm made from foam, you can cut out a strip right down the centre front and back, and then glue it back together and that gives you a thinner arm. You will have to adjust some of the other pieces as well, but it is at least a really good starting point. Hope that helps a little!

What thickness of EVA foam did you use for the base of the arm? The pattern says to use 6mm but that seems a lot thinner.
@LostWax7 жыл бұрын
Yep, I used 6mm, though it's a bit hard to measure the thickness properly because of the pattern on one side of the foam. So to be more specific, 6mm would be the measurement of the foam not including the cross hatch pattern. So if you included the cross hatch pattern, that would add another mm

A Vicious Vixen yes you can. Once you buy the pattern you can either us photoshop to mirror the image or print it out normally and flip the pattern over (I suggest tracing the pattern on the other side with pen so you remember to use the pen side) if that makes sense

Using a paint program sounds tedious and looses quality. Your print driver may support mirrored printing. The full Acrobat program (not the free reader) supports mirrored printing. Apparently the free PDF995 tool lets you print to a new pdf that is mirrored. Then print the mirrored copy as normal. That's probably where I'd start if I wanted a mirrored version. craftygoat.com/2006/11/printing_mirrored_text_on_any.html

Thanks for the reply! I will just have to scale up the upper arm so I have it ready in time for a con in september. Can't wait!
@LostWax7 жыл бұрын
Hey just a few tips for scaling the arm, Be aware that it probably won't work to just scale the pattern pieces up in all dimensions, because then it will be too long. My arm is 58 ch shoulder to wrist, so it that's about right for you, you want to just add width. Basically the way I am scaling up the pattern is to add an extra strip down the front centre and back centre of the arm. So, if when you print the pattern, cut down the centre of pieces 1-5 and tape in an extra strip of paper. I am not sure how big your arm is, but for the larger size I am making, I am adding 2 (front and back) aprox 3.5 cm wide strips for the top section of the arm, and for the bottom half, two strips that taper from 3cm at the elbow, down to 1.25cm at the wrist. Hope that's helpful. I figure that should fit an arm with about a 40cm bicep.

so im completely new to crafting with foam and was wondering what is the best thickness of eva foam for a knight armor?
@LostWax6 жыл бұрын
I would go for around 5-6mm thick. But it needs to be reasonably dense, if not it won't be strong enough.
@Darkspirit-sk8bw6 жыл бұрын
how do i know how dense it is? is it usually written when you buy it?
@LostWax6 жыл бұрын
No, not usually- are you planning to buy it online or locally? If you can feel it you can get a good idea. Check out those puzzle piece floor mats- they usually come in sets of 4, those are generally a decent density, but usually too thick for most products. I buy a big 4x8 foot roll of foam that is textured on one side and about 5mm thick at my local hardware store. Generally if it is sold as a camping mat, it's not dense enough for armour, but if it is a floor mat it probably is. I have some links on my website here that might help you out. You don't want the blue roll of foam in the first picture, it's not the dense stuff. www.lostwaxoz.com/product-links/ Sorry for the ramble, hope something helps!
@Darkspirit-sk8bw6 жыл бұрын
i dont mind the rambling at all, just good with more information, im planning to buy locally, so i should search for something that feels like a floormat? and another question i have is, does eva foam stick to fabric if glued on with the use of glue (hot or not) or does it just rip off?
@LostWax6 жыл бұрын
I think you will find that anything that is made as a floor mat will be fine. Oh, I forgot to say it should be made of EVA foam. It is light and holds its shape reasonably well. It should work to glue it to fabric, the only thing I would say is if you are glueing the finished surface of the foam, rough it up a little bit with some sandpaper to give the glue something to grip.

@LostWax22 күн бұрын
I just print and assemble it normally, then hold it against a window and trace the important markings to the back of the paper.
@GerryChopikRealtor6 жыл бұрын
Am I wrong, or are the elbow pivot holes the incorrect size on pieces #1, #5 and #6. I cut them as stated at 8mm but your video states to use 11 mm / 7/8" tubing, which can be stuffed through but it's very tight. Seems to me the pattern should state 11mm holes.
@LostWax6 жыл бұрын
Yep, you want the fit of the tubing to be quite tight. THe reason is that the foam will stretch a bit. If you used 11m holes for 11mm tube, there would be a good chance of the rivet popping out.

Hi, I'm new to cosplay and i would love to make this armpiece (already bought the pattern). But I have one question : Isn't it better to prime the foam before painting it ? What difference will it make ? Thx
@LostWax6 жыл бұрын
Everyone has their own technique. Basically you prime the foam to help fill all the porosity of the foam so that your paint layer goes on better. If you were going to spray paint your foam, you would definitely need to prime it first because spray is so thin. I never prime my foam, or rather I suppose you could say I prime my foam with a layer of paint:) It is just one less thing you need to buy, simplifying the process. I always recommend using artists acrylic paints- they don't need to be crazy expensive, the "Basics" brand works fine. And I give my foam 3 coats. If you prime it, you are still going to need 2 coats of paint anyways. That's what I do , but others do differently and it all works:)

Depends how many arms you want to make:) 12 square feet should easily do one arm

Samsonite maybe you could paint gears on your walls and use gold brown black and gold colors. And for your bed you could use those same colors with swirls and stuff or find a steampunk bed set online.and if you want anything else(a desk ext. ) that is weirdly colored like pink in a dark room you could paint it to match it with your room. Btw......your welcome

Hey Chris, what thickness foam did you use for the bigger parts? Is it okay if I used a 12mm foam for my arm since it's smaller?
@LostWax7 жыл бұрын
I used 6mm foam. You can probably use thicker foam, might just need a little tweaking.

I have a question. So, I'm a new purchaser of the complete set of patterns (best decision ever) and I recently bought the yoga mat that you have listed on your supplies list to make this. However, after cutting everything out, I'm realizing that the mat is about 9mm thick, and I'm worried that it's going to be too bulky. Anyone have any suggestions?

Hmmm, it might be a little thick, but it could still work- it will end up a smaller size though because of the extra foam thickness. I am just wondering which mat you bought? If you could send me the link, I would like to check it out. You can email me at lostwaxozcontact@gmail.com

I purchased the blue one that’s on the top of your supplies list. However, I’m a pretty small person, and I’m pretty sure that I can get it to work. I love your videos! Thanks so much!

Hi. Just bought the Everything package. I am going to build the Jet Pack and the Arm (Med size). Maybe I missed it somewhere, but how much mat is required for each of these? Appreciate your help. Jim

I bet it'd look even better if you make-uped the inner part of your elbow to be black. also you could wear a black glove under it to make it fully machine-looking

Are you an actual costume designer? Because this looks cool!

I don't know....How do you define "actual costume designer"? I do design costumes, but the only training I have had in the field is by making stuff throughout my life.
