I really like how you present the information. After ten years away, we return to caravanning next week. We've got Ford Assistance AA cover on our relatively new tow car. According to the policy, they'll recover the caravan to a safe place in the event of a breakdown. But there's nothing I can see in there about sorting out the problems you describe so eloquently. I'm going to have a look at getting Caravan & Motorhome Green Flag cover just in case we ever breakdown...

good to know glad your sorted, I was on site 2yrs ago and my only alko key would not lock so left it off, it transpired that keeping the key on my keyring damaged the key, as the spare at home was fine, so now I keep the key in its box and carry spares but not on any keyring as they become out of shape, the key is not as robust as I expected because its mainly hollow.

In the alco kit bag you well find a small rubber cap that will fit onto your key way .allco supply this item as standard in a new lack bag .you will find a cutout were it shud be found ......

Hi Phil, I have just had a similar problem with the Alko lock, went to remove it and the key wouldn’t insert due to the lock and barrel being out of line, not sure how that could have happened, the lock was well greased as well. I had to call the AA out but in the meantime looked on the internet and the solution around it was to file the lug down on the key to enable it to insert. Actually removed it using this method but surely this is some kind of design fault. I dread removing the lock anyway but with the latest saga, have no confidence with using it again. Hi Michael sorry to read you had an issue with your lock. A lot folk are not happy with this lock. A lot have bought the Nemesis wheel lock. I have on as a second wheel lock. It insurance approved. I have a video on fitting it on the channel. Hope this helps. Phil 🙂

Another great and informative video Phil albeit slightly concerning. My biggest worry when picking up the caravan from storage is getting the al-ko lock off. Unfortunately it is a stipulated by our insurance company that we have to have an al-ko chassis lock fitted when left in storage. When we’re away however, I don’t use it, I use a Milenco Wraith on the other wheel which is as good or acclaimed to be better than the Nemesis ultra. (We had the nemesis ultra fitted to our previous caravan.....) cheers Keith👍

Thanks Keith & Michele. Yes our insurance states the al-ko device at storage. There are several other locks out there all of which do a great job. I now have 2 devices on our van at storage. You can never have enough security. Just keep the al-ko lock rust free and you should have no issues. Cheers Phil. 👍😀

The caravan and Motorhome club green flag is a must. I had an issue with my towing electrics s couple of weeks ago when traveling from Preston to Wembley. They came out spent an hour fixing the job and got me an my way. Again, like you I was worried we would lose money on our site booking. Great vlog with good advice 👍

Hi Phil . Only just watched the video about your problem with the wheel lock. Thanks for the tip. So Alko no help customer service sounds very poor. Good on Green flag for helping you out. I had to call them out when towing the caravan prompt service excellent in my view. So some companies know how to look after people.in my opinion they are excellent. Good info again Phil, I dont use alko wheel locks . But totally agree on the Green Flag service, They have got me out of a mess on several occasions. I have personal cover due to using several vehicles and there service has been top notch.

Thanks Harry. I have to admit the after sale service is not best. They rely on their FAQ page which does have some answers but not all. I am old fashioned I suppose and prefer speaking to a human. Wd40 is a good penetrating oil but not a good rust preventer. It actually attracts moisture. So, if you want to avoid the lock rusting, use white spray grease. Give the entire lock a thin coat.

Didn't you get the black rubber bung that you fit in to the lock barrel which should come with the locks ?, this does stop water & debris from entering the lock etc. Also if you haven't got any Wheel covers I sugest to get some as not only will it stop the affect of the UV rays from the sun cracking your tyre's it will also prevent debris from entering the lock especially as your van is left in storage. Never had any problems with the Alco locks in the past 14 years.

Hi Phil thanks for bringing this to attention was not aware of this glad u bought this up will know what to do if it ever happened lucky he enough I don't hav to put locks on van as my storage takes the van in for me I'm not allowed in the vans r not allowed locks on for fire safety there only one way in and out when closed they put 3 ton concrete blocks in front of the gates about four of them plus the owner lives there aswell don't think they hav ever had a break in cheers kev

No not cheap more than normal storage think I pay 500 pound year which is a lot more than some storage it just less worry and don't after worry about other people on site catching the van if u know what I mean my caravan insurance know there's no locks on when in storage they fine with it as long as I put locks on when I go off with it to camp site think worth the extra cost .kev

Only recently found out wd40 is a water displacement hence wd.i now use silicone lubricant spray to stop things seizing up.hope this helps.great video again phil.

Hi . I am getting a caravan with the alko lock body only . I have bought a new lock Assembly to go into it. A good idea to use some Henry paper to lightly rub down the inside of the alko body the spray WD40 before putting in the lock Assembly. PS I have had the same trouble with Alco

lost weekends caravan - Thanks Phil - the issue I have is the bolt will not screw more than a turn or so into its receiver before it locks up! It is as if the thread on the receiver is buggered, but I don’t want to force it, it’s all brand new stuff. It is going back to the dealer before the end of the month for a few snagging items, including the Alko lock, hopefully they’ll resolve it then! Cracking advice there Phil, thanks for sharing. Good idea from Jules for the graphite spray. My two locks still have a protective coating, although those rubber keyhole protectors are useless and I lost one fairly quickly. Unfortunately, I have to use them as a condition of my insurance!

Hi Phil glad you got away ok, I too have experienced good and bad service from the same companies, great from Green Flag poor from Alko. I had a tyre problem on Anglesey (Martin Caravan Nut has covered it on his site) Green Flag despatched Moduron Maethlu Motors from Llangefni they arrived within 20 mins fitted spare took tyre and wheel away and returned following morning. Superb service. Alko on other hand 👎 I bought my van 2009 and Alko wheel lock, for security. On the hand over I was shown that the Alko receivers had security grub screws fitted to them in order to stop another make of security device from being fitted. Unfortunately I had to contact Alko to get them. I refused to accept the van as I was unable to secure it. The dealer, Harrington’s gave me a wheel lock from their store so I was able to take my new van. This problem took the shine off what was supposed to be a special day. Alko customer service were courteous and that’s about all I can say.

Hi everyone some of you mention O rings and rubber toggle, I have neither. I’m wondering if Alko have improved the product over the years as mine is an early version 10yrs old now. In Alkos defence I’ve not had any trouble with it but I have periodically lubricated the lock with WD40.

Hi Colin sorry you had an issue with Al-ko. My only issue is there are no humans to talk to. Reading the comment so far some folk use Graphite Spray, white grease and vaseline. Some interesting ways to keep the lock from rusting up. Thanks again. Phil😀👍

Definitely thumbs up for green flag and a 👎 for Alko I must admit put alko clamp has a rubber grommet that pushes over the lock it’s worked ok so far but will definitely be checking it. Thanks for sharing Best wishes Jon& Karen

Good job you got it sorted then you were able to buy me that beer you owed me 😂 We also have CAMC breakdown and have used it once and they were great. I have to say it took well over 2 hours to get the lock off. WD40 was used but Graphite Grease did finally solve our issue. Glad you got yours sorted. Thanks Phil👍🙂

We had this issue when we had the caravan. The barrel and receptacle were constantly corroding. I was still in the RAF and used the equivalent of WD-40 we used on aircraft to help. Run out of it now but don't have the caravan of course.

Hi Brian. I found soaking in WD40 for a while. Clean it off and dry it. I then coated heavily in Graphite Grease. I have never had an issue since. £150 is a bit steep its not much more for new one? Try the above before giving Alko your money. Good luck Phil🙂

Great video as usual. I never use wd40, I'm a big fan of Duck Oil though. I find it far more durable and much kinder on electrical items. I wonder if graphite powder would be a good long term solution as it is dry and doesn't attract dust.

I had the Nemesis wheel lock on my caravan and the same thing happened to me the lock would not come off so like you i phoned my breakdown cover for help (The AA) they refused to come out as "it was not mechanical" even when i argued i had Caravan cover, It was a Bank Holiday so i couldn't phone Purple line Nemesis so in the end i phoned a Locksmith who came out and fuss arsed about tying to undo it even tho i said just cut it off a few times then he wanted extra money because he had been out for over an hour in the end he cut it off and charged me £180 and we were able to go away on Holidays lol.

Hi Lynn. Sorry to hear about your issues with the AA. Green Flag cover is with the Caravan and Motorhome Club. It does cover issues such as this. Maybe worth changing over Cover. We cover all our locks now in Graphite Grease. This has worked for us. We also remove the locks over the winter and refit them to prevent them from seizing up. Hope you have better luck next Season. Apply a coat of grease regularly on the male and female part of the lock and you will have no problems what so ever with water

I’m not a fan of these cylinder locks where the ball bearings protrude to provide the locking. I don’t have an Alko lock but I have had the same rust problem with the SAS wheel lock and the Bulldog hitch lock. I am presently designing/making my own wheel lock which can be secured by a heavy duty, high quality padlock. I understand there may be insurance implications for this but I just want something that is easy to use. Of course, my design may be my Dragon’s Den moment that makes me a millionaire.

Thanks for the advice, it might be worth spraying some white grease on the inside rim to prevent water for when the van is stood for long periods.

That's unbelievably poor service from Al-ko Phil. Did they ever get back to you? Having read many of the comments I'm glad it's not just me who struggles to fit the Al-ko lock. It seems only the insurance companies seem to love them.

Hi No they never got back to me. Yes they do love them. I have also bought a Nemesis Wheel lock which we use on sites. I would recommend the Nemesis lock, I reviewed it on the channel. Thanks Phil🙂

Hey guess what , did not prepare mine either didn’t really think about it , so looking forward to the worst this Wednesday , I’ve got some spray looks like I’ll need it, after if I get the thing out I will definitely use a silicone spray or something, The lock is a lot of money and I’m surprised it rusts so easily anyway let you know how long I spend Wednesday working on it Pleased your Green flag came to the rescue

Thanks Gavin. Yes I was surprised too when it wouldn't unlock. If it doesn't come off let the spray soak for 20 mins and try again. Green flag is worth it just for the van alone. Cheers phil. Ps enjoy your trip away. 👍

There should be a 30mm outside diameter O ring in there, get yourself on ebay there's plenty on there

Wd 40 is ok but a far superior product is called ACF50 it's not cheap but it's the best ,, iam also getting sick of alko wheel lock the alignment problem drives me nuts

Steve one Hi Steve. You are right. Wd40 is great to free stuff. I have never heard of this product. I am using graphite grease at present which seems ok. Yes the lock is pain to align especially when it’s pouring down. But it is an insurance requirement for me I’m afraid. Thanks Phil 👍🙂

Great video but Rich doesn't advise wd40 for protecting it. Vaseline would be a much better alternative (he was in the motor trade for years). - Lin xx

Hi Gary. Yes you are correct. I have purchased some Graphite Grease and smoother the inner lock part plus the key hole. It now works first time. Thanks Phil👍😀
