do you think the Y front casts have been being shipped from Fremont?
@DessieDoolanАй бұрын
@@benguthrie49 That's a possibility. My speculation is that 4680 variant Model Ys (those that have the structural battery pack and cast frontend) stopped when 4680 batteries were required for Cybertruck production. A quick review of Jeff's regular path videos showed Model Y front castings around the place up until about September last year. Roughly the time Cybertruck production was about to start.

But they will get full of dirt, especially with construction nearby. If they are planning on doing some machining on the castings, they will need to wash them. If they are planning on just using them in the assembly, they will need to wash them. A lot of wasted labor and water, plus trying to clean off dried on dirt is difficult and not always successful. My guess is that all those castings are out of spec / scrap.

The grey and green cabinets are for metering equipment, as seen installed on the left. The item with 6 bushings on top is a medium voltage circuit breaker set. Old concrete batch plant site: @ 15:38 Speculating that this will be going away. Not just because it hasn't been used for a while, but because of the future phase 2 expansion of the substation. The road and power lines may be in the way. North side of casting: @ 12:14 (Left) Crew working in and around the vaults by the building. Transformers: @ 8:33 Count now down to 93 Speculating that some are going into the south end, or leaving the site for another project. Tunnel: @ 6:46 I may be wrong but wouldn't it be better to place the cover over the electrical equipment? Frame for the canopy being erected over tunnel entrance. So what are the castings? Are they blanks that have never gone hrough an attempt to make a part for the cars? Are they duds that are failures from attempting to make a part for a car? As I understand it they need a big front piece and a big back piece that are cast aluminum. The battery makes up the middle.

I agree completely. 10 million sq. ft. and 90 feet floor to roof.... They should be able to find space inside the main building for automated vertical storage.
@Russ1956Ай бұрын
@@DavidJohnson-tv2nn There's a reason they are outside: •To age them. Aluminum castings are subject to age hardening, which is a process where the metal becomes stronger and more durable over time. This process is accelerated by exposure to heat, so storing the castings outside can help them to age faster. •To remove impurities. Aluminum castings can contain impurities that can weaken the metal and make it more susceptible to corrosion. Storing the castings outside can help to remove these impurities by exposing them to the elements. •To reduce costs. Storing the castings outside is a more cost-effective way to age and clean them than using other methods, such as heat treating them in an oven.
@paul568328 күн бұрын

Recycling those big castings is a lot more difficult than it sounds. The factory is made to run on quality aluminum ingots that fit in the furnace with little effort and has the inherent quality in the raw material. A casting, especially a dirty casting that has been sitting outside is not something that you want to try putting in your production. The giga casting is a borderline process in that everything needs to be at its very best to succeed. Trying to saw up dirty castings and putting them in with the relatively pure aluminum alloy is a fools errand. They are better off shipping them back to the place that makes the ingots. There they can control the quality of the alloy for a consistent giga casting back at tesla.
