6:45 caisson shaft sinking- can see the first cast ring has been sunk, lower deck reinstalled for rebar fixing of second lift. Inner shutter being prepared. Soft eyes for pipe jack TBM can be seen (no reinforcement openings and heavy reinforcement either side). Lower first cast section will form the invert base plug of the shaft once excavation complete.

I was wondering about that deck. But, it makes sense. You would not want to work over a 30 ft. deep hole. Do they cast in nubs ,? or plates to weld to ? How do they support the temp. decking?
@davidsalisbury5010 сағат бұрын
I can’t see how they support the deck from the video. Several way they can do it. Personally I prefer to cast in six pairs of anchor threads fixed to the inner Formwork. Remove the bolts after casting, threads are left there for the next deck lift.

What decides the choice between cast in situ or precast liner rings? Shaft diameter, soil conditions, final use? I see precast rings being used on shafts of larger, and smaller diameters.
@davidsalisbury507 сағат бұрын
@@DessieDoolanNot sure. Precast has a benefit in that it has instant full strength. No delay fixing rebar, pouring concrete, waiting for curing. Often for caissons the precast rings have a mass concrete surround so they form their own internal Formwork. This is usually just for pure weight/mass to hold the shaft down. Remember, a caissons shaft needs to be heavy enough to hold itself in the ground against the buoyancy effect from the ground water table. (I have seen 15m of a shaft pop up out of the ground in about 10 seconds, and I have “pumped” a caissons back up when we got the level of the TBM launch eye too low). Segments linings can vibe precast with “soft eyes” that go down to the right level for the TBM to launch through. Maybe no local supplier of precast at that size. Logistics too expensive to make it viable over cast in-situ. These guys seem to know what they are doing. I’m sure they have looked at the technical issues and run the numbers before they opted for cast in-situ.
@DessieDoolan6 сағат бұрын
@@davidsalisbury50 Were your words recorded as the caisson rose out of the ground!😑 There was a precast deep wet-well constructed in the apron 10m north of the tunnel alignment. The top is quite visible just north of the boom-lift at 3:30. Construction of that wet-well included de-watering and a steel section caisson being constructed to allow the much smaller diameter wet-well to be assembled inside. The wet-well had larger diameter base that is described in the site plans as an 'anti-floating ring'. I gather such a ring will be part of the caisson base at 6:40 when constructed. Purpose of that wet-well at 3:30 was never clear to me. I had long assumed it was located to miss the tunnel alignment, although it was constructed 12 months prior to the start of the tunnel project. Very deep 12m or more, the other wet-wells are 5 or 6m deep. Now thinking it might somehow be associated with this Giga Texas Offsite Wastewater Interceptor project.

Also, will the launch shaft be a permanent structure, and not backfilled when tunneling is complete?
@tunnellingsalisbury760511 сағат бұрын
@@DavidJohnson-tv2nn Both good questions. I'm only guessing here. I don't think there is a great advantage in driving two at the same time unless there is extreme pressure on early completion (need 2x everything else to get any real improved efficiency). Plus the shaft bottom arrangement would be complex and congested. Shaft seems quite large for the size of tunnel opening but not extreme. I suspect it would be a permanent structure. Most specifications/codes require a manhole at any change in direction of a sewer. The shaft may be a more complex structure than a simple manhole, there may be smaller incoming lines higher up, it could be a split shaft with a wet-well one side and a riser the other (unlikely unless we see more starter rebar being installed at the next lift level.

@@sammyk874 Yes, basically a caisson that will sink or be jacked down as dirt is excavated and rings are added until they get to their desired depth (about 40'). Then they will use a process called pipe jacking. Hydraulic jacks will push a small TBM forward. It will bore through the caisson and then the soft dirt under the river. Bore diameter will be about 7'. They will continue to add pipe sections behind the TBM. The jacks will push the pipe and TBM. Google Earth shows the distance under the river to be about 1,500 feet. Also, it appears that they will do another bore to the east under 130 to the work area @ 7:43 Where another smaller caisson will be constructed. @@sammyk874 Think of it like shaft mining where you dig down or rather sink down to the required depth then fan out or follow the coal seams, for example. Seen the same method used a number of times in Asia and around the word for water wells. Manual wells involving a handle, bucket and rope like you would see in movies and cartoons. Concrete hoop is placed on the ground and then the ground inside the ~1.5m diameter ring is slowly and carefully excavated so the ring slowly drops with it due to gravity. As it drops, another ring is fitted or even just placed atop, and then again and again.... how deep you want it?
