I didn't know this was a physical card game as well! I discovered this game on the Switch a few years ago and just bought it a few months ago and love it, and just found out less than an hour ago that a physical version exists! The physical card game is a bit different, but it retains a lot of the core mechanics. Now you mentioned being able to build your own decks for this game as well. Are there separate expansions or cards to purchase for creating your own decks, or does it come with the default game?

My favorites are still Star Trek Frontiers as well as games like Sword And Sorcery and Gloomhaven. Star Trek especially I never get sick of as it works better than Mage Knight and the theme is really strong. I like Arkham Horror LCG but it's not always what I would call fun. Too punishing at times, although not as bad as the original Arkham Horror,and I actually like the card play better in Frontiers. Might have to try this LCG though since I love LOTR Journey In Middle Earth and just picked up the new Spreading War expansion. Haven't tried Return To Dark Tower yet,way too hard to find now,so that might get on there as well.

That’s exactly right. Ideally you’ll ping pong turns between removing threats and questing. This is the main puzzle of the game as you’ll take damage no matter what if engaged.

Right now, my favorite co-op is Marvel Champions. When I was just new in the hobby, I tried the LOTR LCG. I just tried it with the core set. I didn’t know that FFG had the habit of requiring 2 core sets to really play the game. After several frustrating solo plays, I packed it up and traded it away. Now, as I am a more experienced gamer, and with this revised core set, I am curious about trying it again. At the same time, I now have other games that I now play, like Champions, so it’s got a higher bar to pass now.

Probably because of the amount of cards. This game was really challenging to hunt for specific cards. Very hard as I don’t think there was a secondary market for singles. I had to proxy a ton of cards because I had gotten into it when most sets were oop.

@joelbloch083 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the video. I am surprised you compare it to Arkham Horror, which more on the narrative side, and has way more randomness, rather than to Marvel Champions, which is more abstract and focuses more on deck building. So if you were to compare it to MC, what would be your pick, in terms of gameplay and mechanics?
@DicetowerBryan3 жыл бұрын
That’s a good point, I think because I’m my mind the release order is why I made the comparison more so than style albeit that might not be quite fair. The MC system is very tight and feels much more like you are playing as your character where this is you playing as a Fellowship on a larger scale story so it’s more abstract. I’d pick this one but maybe because I’ve played it more.
@TwoLastNames2 жыл бұрын
I would disagree that Arkham has more randomness. I feel that Arkham took a lot of issues with the LotR system and addressed them, one of them being how a bad draw in LotR can absolutely wreck you. Another issue with LotR (and this is purely opinion), is that it can be very time consuming to rebuild your deck prior to each scenario in a cycle, simply to have a shot at winning it. I love LotR and the puzzly nature of the deck-building, but I think Arkham is much more straightforward and streamlined.

@TBHJR2 жыл бұрын
Yep. I tried to learn and play on my own and had the most frustrating time. I always lost too.
@GeoffFerreira-s5b Жыл бұрын
Thank you for your perspective but I disagree that it's an easy game to teach and learn. I'm a new player that enjoys some complex games like Magic the Gathering. I do enjoy the game but the 7 phases and specific timing for action windows takes time to fully grasp. I also find that quest and enemy/ally abilities triggering as specific phases can be overlooked especially while learning. Depending on how many simultaneous triggers exist at once, this can be tedious. Its certainly a good game, but it requires patience to learn and appreciate the puzzle that it is.
@andrejespersen86343 жыл бұрын
I do wanna point out it looks like its the same cards and is the old core set only difference is you get x3 of copies you only got 1 or 2 of in the old core set. ( normally this problem is in MANY LCG games ) the way we got around this was we bought 2 core sets. ( commen for games like LOTR. Netrunner, Star wars LCG and so on (problem is the lack of copies were you are allowed to put more in the deck to make it as good as possible. if you own 2 core sets there is no need for this after looking at the card list of this box.

Freaking love this game. I have 3 of the core sets and each adventure from the first 2 cycles (as well as a couple bigger expansions). $70 seems way too much for a starter here though IMHO. Wasn't the original starter $30? (I payed $18 each for mine).
@redtailedhawkdude2 жыл бұрын
The revised core sets have enough cards in them for a 4 player game so you don't have to buy a second one like you used to if you wanted to do a 4P. Also, if you don't get it off fantasyflight itself you can find it cheaper than 70. Also, if you think about it this way origial starter is 30. Many people bought two. They already paid 60 for the starter lol

I have the original core set and some expansions. While it was nice, the price of this game is so much greater than Marvel Champions and AH, so I stopped. The increased cost is based on its focus. LOTR is more about deck construction (deck building like Magic) than anything else, so you need a lot of cards to get full experience from the game. MC and AH have deck construction but they are maybe 10-30% of your time in the games; LOTR is easily 50% or more. You need a lot of time and money to get to the same level of play you can get from casually playing the others. Sadly, it’s a lifestyle game and there are too many games out there just to dedicate all my time to this one game.
@warpaint93852 жыл бұрын
Fav co op game you ask, not this that’s for sure. Three things I disliked about this game. 1. The 3 lousy resources you get to pay for cards never seems like it’s enough. 2. The quest phase is ridiculous as sometimes your tapping so many characters just to beat the AI in the game you’ve got nobody left to do anything in other phases. 3. Some scenarios are just too hard unless you can put a winning deck together plus some luck. I’d rate AH The card game higher than this but don’t really have a favourite anyway. So yeah sorry… disagree. Love LotR but disappointed with this game which is a shame.

This was my favorite game for YEARS. But...I think the difficulty curve just got away from me. Easy mode usually cut the most interesting parts of a given scenario and playing with my gf who knew how to play but was not goin go want to learn a whole new deck that had to be built for every given scenario...it just fell off. Love the system. But I think Arkham handles the difficulty curve MUCH better. The most interesting stuff is in the standard difficulty and a good team if decks can tackle most any challenge with cards up to that point in release.

Really not sure about the game. The cards are beautiful, strong theme and very cool mechanics. Just so you know Arkham was not designed to be an improvement of LoTR LCG even though many tout that like you are which is a massive disservice to the overall design.
