While traveling up CA Highway 49, we decided to embark on a side quest to the famous Mexican Ghost Town known as HORNITOS!
Hornitos was founded and settled by Spanish and Mexicans in the mid 1800s. During the California Gold Rush, Hornitos became home to Mexican miners as they were discriminated against at nearby mining towns. Hornitos was also very famous for having saloons, fandango halls, brothels, and gambling dens. The vice and sexy activities also attracted many bandits, none more famous than Joaquin Murietta. However, like many towns that were surrounded by gold mines, once the mines were depleted, the people left as well.
Although Hornitos is no longer the once populous sin city full of sexy activities, there are remnants from the 1800s still standing today. While considered a "ghost town", there are still a handful of people living here!
