Drove 'em both back-to-back before I picked my winner. Which was the VX220. It's much easier to maintain, I think it looks nicer, and being a Vauxhall it's not a "oh look at that idiot in his fancy showy car" - which is what my old Subaru was by the bucketload. Plus if you know how to drive a VX, they're more than capable of upsetting a 111R on the track.

Don't forget that the lotus is after all a lotus and also looks much much better. As Jeremy Clarkson once put it in and old Lotus Esprit roadtest : "When u get home at night and say "Shall we go out in the Lotus tonight?" it has a certain ring to it" I think the Lotus badge alone is worth the extra couple of grand. But they stopped producing the vx220 anyway so it doesn't really matter.

Both are awesome, my friend had an s1 Elise (which the VX220 is underneath effectively) and is now looking for a 111r, I quite fancy a VX220 just because its deemed the underdog and its also quite a bit more rare and a more interesting sight on the road. I think there is little to separate these cars on the track but the VX has the added of advantage of a turbo, so £500 later and it'll be 250bhp. Apples and pears really, the lotus definitely takes it in image and badge, but personally I'd take a VX just for the cost, rarity and tuning potential.

VX220 is actually based on the S2 Elise chassis. Vaux. helped develop it, and as a one off, the VX220 was born.

@jespurrier seriously...you could also replace the engine with some japenese inline 4 or 6 and mod it up to upwards of 500 horsepower for not much more...it would be like owning a ferrari caliber car for under 25 grand

Yeah man. He seems like an excellent driver. Me not being a driving expert, I wouldn't really know but I'd say he's better than Jeremy was. He nails those turns with just the right amount of power sliding and comes out of them with incredible speed. I want to take racing school.

The VX 220 Turbo looks better overall and because of the back design of the car, it's not the best but I think it's one of the better ones with a nicer back compared to most Lotus.

yeah. the price makes more sense; since 1 pound is about 2 dollars. that comes out to about the right price for a lotus. my neighbor had one and he paid around 48,000 for his.

its not sold anymore. it costs around 20000 to 25000 $ used. in germany you can get the better looking opel speedster turbo, which is the same car but with a different stylingkit.

The elise does have a better setup with it's wheels, the vx220 has bigger front wheels and slimmers tyres, a good upgrade is to put the same wheels sizes on as the lotus, just as they intened vauxhall put the bigger ones on for looks...

Yeah, Clarkson needed the help because he couldn't kill the understeer, not because he didn't know how to drive it. I agree that the 0-60 time of 4 seconds is rubbish, and I hope we all agree that the Elise is the better car :)

I'm confused. He said that the Vauxhall was 28 thousand pounds and the Lotus was 26 thousand pounds. Doesn't he mean hundred? I can't think of any car that can take a turn at 40 miles an hour that weighs more than 4000 pounds. And I was pretty sure the Elise weighed something like 1900 pounds. Do the brits weigh their cars differently? Is gravity greater in the UK?

the only problem with the lotus elise is the top speed is awfull it will only do 125mph on a clear highway ive seen people in diesel cars overtake them LOL but on a track its very fast

The VXT is a far better car and was pipped by that bull that 5th gear always do in their tests where they make one car go out wide over the finish line so it looks better when they do the cross examination vid at the end! Put the VX on the inside and it would have won!!! Especially seen as it came out of the last corner in the lead and it's the faster at accelerating of the two cars ;)

Corsa c 1.4 twinport SXI new ECU = £135. its made by Siemens, same as what Mercedes uses, but in a Mercedes it cost you £800 yea everything else is GM but is that really a bad thing? its done 95k miles iv had it since 30k, iv also replaced a timing belt (£180) including labour my friends clio had a dodgey timing belt also, it blasted all the cylinder heads thru the engine destroyed all 8 valves (not 16) & wrote the car off. Engine light came on my corsa when belt was worn, not in new clio

the lotus is still a better car because its has a stalk tuned toyota with no forced induction and the best handeling in the world and the vx220 has the 2.0 with forced induction turbo and cheep handeling with a whiplash at the end of every turn. so you could still do more to the lotus (not that you have to because it still won) to make it faster than it is

Lotus is a better car had an S1 and will be going back to S2 shortly .. Put wider tyres on the front and it will reduce all that understeer and give a bit more oversteer.. Lotus know how to build a chassis and always have done.. Why do you think vauxhall get lotus to make the car for them?? Lotus is far better looking too!! Personal choice I know

VX220's are easier to mod, easier to service, cheaper to run, look for manly, cheaper to insure - the worst part is that they're built by lotus. if lotus gave the car to vauxhall and they built it it wouldnt fall apart. Getting my vx in a few months and i cant wait to hunt down all the toffs in their slow little lotus'.

Neither of these cars were designed to come in to their own on "normal" (mostly straight) roads. That the Vauxhall is faster in a straight line is missing the point.
