What I love about cars of this period is the - relatively- straight forward and to a degree, logical simplicity they are to work on. And, as always your films are beautifully relaxing and inspiring to watch. ❤ (ps… it’s always fascinating and comforting to see these amazing companies clearly busy keeping wonderful cars on the road)

Lovely, satisfying job Gary. Those UJ's were absolutely clapped out. Shame about the bearing cost. It probably isn't the case for those, but sometimes if you measure the bearings you find that they are available from specialist bearing companies at a fraction of the cost. This is because the car manufacturers would just choose a stock bearing rather than getting specials manufactured.

Hi Gary, just wanted to drop you a message to,say thank you, your videos are always informative, insightful, but for me, calm. I also owned a Porsche 928GT4, mine was in white with dark blue leather. Cost me a few quid with Paul Anderson to keep going, worth it, wish I’d kept it. Also owned Sir Steering Moss SL500 Mille Miglia, another one that I let go. Anyway keep going. Looking forward to your next post Regards Paul

Gary of all the cars you have worked on now which was the best engineered to date. Bet Tom is excited…
@classic.obsession2 ай бұрын
Hi John. Love how those old Mercedes are engineered, especially the 600’s. If anything they’re over engineered. The rolls are amazing for a British car. Lotus strange but ingenuity and simplicity with a lovely engine. Porsche streets ahead in terms of design and engineering..,all innovative, quirky and interesting in their own way really. All cars look the same now. That’s why we all harp back to these hand made cars full of character. Regards.

Elf and Safety Pointer: I would recommend you initially use your scaffold extension on a solid breaker bar, rather than your ratchet wrench - I have learnt the hard way and nearly broke a finger or two when mechanisms fail… ouch! Although I have also managed to snap a breaker bar too, so have now purchased a Milwaukee Hi Torque battery wrench 👍

I don't know if it's the magic of editing or your skill level, but when I work on old cars things don't come apart that easy. Sometimes you spend hours trying to remove one bolt for instance. I've bought bearing in the past from accurately measuring with a Vernier caliper.
@classic.obsession2 ай бұрын
It’s all thanks to the previous owner smearing copper grease on each bolt before reassembly after each job. Makes life so much easier for the next guy. Regards.

Does the suspension need setting up with shims for directional integrity and do those drive shafts need balancing or are they okay as they are as they are smaller than a rwd driveshaft? You're working really well on this Lotus, well done and it's all good experience.
@classic.obsession2 ай бұрын
Hi. Not sure. I just like to reassemble the same as I take apart with shims in same place to be sure. All feels nice and smooth and balanced now. Like you say they’re probably simpler as they’re shorter. Regards.

I always thought the Lotus Espirt turbos from the 1980's were so beautiful. The one that was used in the Hollywood movie, "Pretty Woman", was a 1989 White Espirt Turbo SE which was a stunning automobile. Sadly, their quality control wasn't the best so it was no surprise that so many of them were in for service as Gary so rightfully pointed out. 🤦
