I'm pushing eighty now (like a few others on here I think!). I experienced some of these roads whilst following the 1968 Geneva rally in my then new 850 Mini. I left the pub I lived at in rural Bedfordshire on my wee motorcycle (250cc), bound for Milan via the Mt Blanc Tunnel in July a quarter of a century back. Got through to the Italian side, and looked back at the Alps. Forgot about Milan, and headed over the top into Switzerland, via Grand St Bernard Pass. One of my most memorable day's riding ever. 'Tis a magnificent part of the world. Did the Gottard pass, and a few more that trip too.

I just loved the contrast of beautiful scenery, stunning car, the glamour and the use of the map. That paper map was somehow the perfect addition that just matched driving through Switzerland and harkened back to a time when driving in Europe was glamorous. Satnav is a wonderful thing, but it will never have the romance of a foldable paper map that by the end of a touring journey, has small holes where the paper creased from constant folding. Each hole representing a wonderful memory. The Emira somehow encapsulates old-school charm of cars of a bygone age. Quite an achievement for a car that has literally just rolled off the production line.

Something that might have gone unnoticed: Harry talked about the car, the roads, the weather, the scenery, and everything except... ... Except... Except range anxiety. I've no idea what petrol costs over there or how far it is between garages, but it was blissful to just enjoy the trip with Harry and Mrs Harry and not for a single moment have to worry about the car's state of charge or the miles remaining. Be honest. If this Lotus were an EV we'd have been treated to non-stop updates on how much range it had left in it. Of course, I'm not saying that an EV wouldn't have handled the same journey with ease, BUT this video would have been peppered with tiresome battery stats and range predictions. Yes it would. It's all that EV drivers talk about - even when they have no need to. The nagging doubt that there MIGHT have been a hitch would have haunted every hairpin and spoiled the relaxed mood. So thanks, Harry (and Mrs Harry), for an old-fashioned brand-new car journey which focused on what was important and took the vehicle itself for granted. What a refreshing change.
