Lotus keep in mind that when looking at win rates, lower play rate characters don't have newer people tanking their win rates. Feng, bears, jack all have high win rates because of gimmics but also because people who specialize in them play them. On the other hand Dragunov has high win and play rate because he is OP.
@yaznot10 ай бұрын
hwoarang has one of the highest match up knowledge requirements in early ranks, and most players arent committed to learning the match up, which is honestly their fault when they're complaining about it, but even so, he may not be easy to pick up but he's easy to get wins with in beginner ranks which is why he's so frustrating to so many people.
@nerooyeye219610 ай бұрын
This is very well put
@beowulfmoore339910 ай бұрын
7:06 to answer your question, Hwoarang is one of the few characters that has a low bar of entry, but has a super high skill cap. (TW: long post) This means you can pick up Hwoarang and only play him the whole time, yet he won't feel stale. Many players will get a few moves down and think "I've mastered this character". It's hard to say that about Hwoarang. Previously, he wasn't this popular because other characters had the power of Hwoarang without all the technicality. 80 moves are more attractive to new players than almost 200. But now everyone has over 100 moves, so Hwoarang doesn't seem that impossible to learn anymore.
@DarkAsylum2510 ай бұрын
I mean yea that makes sense but in a way that I see it the more moves the better “right”? Because then everyone’s gonna have to have more knowledge of the character and then in my opinion that makes the character strongr becaus of the mentally stack it would cause , etc maybe that’s just because I love fighting games, and I actually like learning too
@LotusAsakura10 ай бұрын
I somewhat understand where you're coming from but I have a hard time believing this is the reason. Tekken movelists have gotten longer and longer and Tekken 7 had plenty of characters with 100+ moves and everything you just said could apply to that game as well and he was still nowhere near this popular.
@beowulfmoore339910 ай бұрын
@@DarkAsylum25 I wholeheartedly agree with you that more moves are better. It makes the game have depth, in my opinion. But there are players out there that don't want complexity. They don't want to have to learn match ups, or techs, or anything else. They want wins. And that means playing simple characters or only high tiers. I'm not referencing the people who LIKE fighting games or enjoy gimmicks, mind you. I mean the people who play just to say they're better than you, but then won't play against you (or rage quit when they start losing with their top tier) because YOU know the matchup and they don't.
@beowulfmoore339910 ай бұрын
@@LotusAsakura Thank you for input! I love discussions about Tekken. You're right: Tekken 7 had a lot of characters who also had 100+ moves in their moveset. So Tekken 8 isn't revolutionary in that aspect. However, Tekken 8 has added more moves to the game since Tekken 7, and added a mechanic that rewards aggressive gameplay. So a character that looks like you can just press buttons and get wins looks more attractive at first. From there, you'll either learn and start to love playing the character, or dislike him and move on. From the data you've shown us, and my own experiences in ranked, it seems the former has happened more often.
@JohnGlow210 ай бұрын
I think this might be true but I honestly think it might be even simpler than that : He just looks cooler. I know that sounds kinda silly but even watching the trailer back then, I remember people being wowed at Hwoarang’s glow up. I feel like what you said in addition to his visual appeal are why you see WAY more of him.
@NicolasKiroy-ex9yz10 ай бұрын
I am an advocate for getting to red and switching off, I think it's the perfect place for a Tekken newbie because I wouldn't want to start my grind for anything more after hitting that late orange wall, nor should I when I'm not entirely set on the character with so many more to try. It's nice because you can pick up a character late green, work through the yellow ranks on fundamentals while I try out moves and get used to my Bnbs, then late orange is graduation. If you can beat that wall, you can put the character down with enough confidence that you'll be making an informed decision when it comes time to pick your first actual main. I made red with Alisa and am very close with Feng, and am excited to choose a third and do it at least one more time.
@six_waterbottles6wb12910 ай бұрын
yeah i might even recommend it for some people. get a character to red, try someone else. so long as you make an emphasis on improving fundamentals and expanding character knowledge across the board, it's not a terrible strat. i ended up doing something similar in tekken 7 and i improved very quickly.
@TAJIG10 ай бұрын
the low playrate characters have smaller datasets so it skews the data when comparing winrates. that + what you were saying about match up knowledege is why the least played characters have some of the highest winrates and makes dragunov look even more cracked imo

@itscolev touched on it already. You have to take into consideration that more people playing a character means a lot of less skilled players playing them. So lower win ratios. And people who are more skilled are more willing to play harder characters, so win rate isn't a great variable to determine how good a character is.
@n9nedots10 ай бұрын
I find it interesting that high execution characters like Bryan and Kazuya are so high up in play rate. I mean I’ve been a lurker in the Tekken scene for awhile, but Tk8 is the first Tekken I’m actually playing and trying to learn. I won’t lie, I picked up Jun thinking she was fun, but tbh I felt like I was getting carried. So I swapped to Bryan and I’m loving the difficulty and how much I’m learning. I wonder if that’s what the appeal of these “harder” characters is for others
@captinchillin10 ай бұрын
For me personally, I've viewed Hwoarang as the secondary main character. The Subzero to Jin's Scorpion if you will. I've played most of the Tekken games since Tekken 3, and this might be bias since Hwoarang was my original main.

I feel like its moreso that red ranks are a complete jungle. Ever since I got my first character to purple, I’ve been chilling with my second and third, and upon getting them both to red, its like there are some players you fight and its like “how on earth did you make it this far?” while other times its like “why are you not ranked WAY higher than just Shinryu?” Red is just a mix of good players, players who found one thing that worked and stuck with it, and improving players learning matchups. It feels like Floor 10 in Strive. And purple+ feels like celestial.

Numbers-wise, Dragunov is the strongest character, no contest. Highest pick rate in purple+, and 7th in win rate. The next closest one is Lee as 13th highest win rate, while being the 10th most picked in purple+. Why does this show that Dragunov is strong? Because the top 10 most wins are all at the bottom half of the pick rate. Things like matchups, knowledge, gimmicks, factor in to lower win rate characters...all except Dragunov. Being the highest win rate means people in the purple+ tier probably mostly lab him, yet he's still finding great success. He's so strong that a lot of Koreans have a pocket Dragunov lol.

I think a big part of the low popularity characters being so high on the win rates is who chooses to play them. Not only do you have match up advantage, but if you're choosing to play these characters you probably are serious about them since they're not as broadly appealing as higher pick rate characters. So there is a natural filtration of the more casual players from these characters (with the exception of the bears who are just wilding)

You also have to take into account that missing characters and "clone" fighters affect the usage chart. Tekken 7 had Armor King, so Armor King mains might be resorting to King in T8, additionally increasing his popularity at the moment. Panda and Kuma are very similar, so their usage not being combined, is definitely going to make them look less popular than the rest of the cast (albeit even combined they might only jump up 6 slots).

As a blue jun player her winrate being low actually makes a lot of since. She’s easy but her counterplay on her strings get real obvious the higher rank you go. Her izumo stance is duckable and a lot of players duck those once I hit middle of purple ish. She doesn’t have a good power crushing move without stance or a fast running button that’s braindead. She relies on good pokes, chip damage, and launch damage. She really does play the opponent game a lot of the time except when she’s in heat where she’s insanely overpowered.

Kuma been in Tekken since Tekken 1. So when people complain about not knowing the match up. I say he’s been in the game for years 🤣🤣
@Justlacegames10 ай бұрын
There are lots of new players so him being in Tekken 1 is irrelevant to them. On top of that the average player isn't going to learn how to fight against a character they rarely see.

That's fair enough, but as long as he's been around, he's always been free wins at all levels of play except top-tier tournaments. He's so rare to play against and has so many knowledge checks that he just smokes people. To actually deal with him, you have to not just lab out his gimmicks, but also figure out which combos and punishers work on him and which don't due to his weird hitboxes, etc. Nobody has time to lab every character in the game and especially not a character that you see once in a blue moon. Obscurity and unpopularity is by far the most powerful character "feature" you can have in your corner in Tekken. In T7, Gigas and Ganryu had by far the highest online winrates because their relative unpopularity and gimmickiness.

As a Flame Ruler Kazuya main playing him past Mighty Ruler is a nightmare. P.S Xiaoyu hella needs nerf. A character with so much evasion should not have has good pressure as she currently has.

As a Zafina Main I agree that I can still Knowledge Check my way to a free win sometimes, even at Blue Ranks. However I don't think this is the main factor in play. As she is not very strong in this game AND is an aquired taste the only people playing her in T8 are the true Zafina fans that played her in T6 and Tag 2 when she was trash Tier and the Few players that didn't just pick her up in T7 for her godlike movement. Therefore there are hardly any players that are losing while trying to learn the character. I guess more than 90% of Zaf players came in already knowing how the character and Tekken plays, only having to adapt to the Changes in T8 In Contrast you have Riena the cool new charater that everyone, including total beginners, want to play and shock horror she gets all the loss stats as players not only have to learn how to use her but also have to learn how to play Tekken itself.

Hwoarang not being popular historically is an interesting take. I played a lot of ranked in T7 and it felt like 50% of the meta was Hwoarang, 25% Law, 25% everyone else. It actually made me want to stop playing lol I hate Hwoarang
@HarmanSingh-pc9qm10 ай бұрын
I’m a Law Main, but picked up Hwoarang cause he looked super cool, and he’s fun. And like you said, the “cheese” (I think he’s pretty fair) is earned lmao

They made Jin very easy to pick and play in T8. A good amount of difference from his T7 Version. Reina's winrate is kind of why I personally disagreed with your placement of Reina in the carried video, if she was a carried character all the newbies would be owning with her like they do with King/Drag in early ranks.
