I love the "I have a black belt" "Great, use it to hold up your pants" exchange because Shannon Lee, Bruce Lee's daughter, plays Lou's special lady friend, and Leo Fong was also a friend of Bruce's, and that comment about black belts WAS used by Bruce because he just didn't see these types of advancements in martial arts school as being worth much. So odds are either Leo or Shannon suggested it be added to the script.
@Maladjester20 күн бұрын
Depending on the school, especially in 'Murica, black belts can be anything from a Happy Meal prize to an important milestone reached after years of diligence and dedication. My uncle ran a dojo for many years. He used to tell the story of how he, as a young guy just getting started in a dojo with no belts, asked his fellow students what the ranking system was. The reply was, "Just shut up and train." That's how he knew he was in a good school.
@JasonBrant19 күн бұрын
Ahh, interesting tidbit. Thanks.
@joshcarter-com19 күн бұрын
People misunderstand the black belt. It doesn't mean you're done training, it means you've become a full student at the dojo. The kyu ranks (colored belts) are for prospective students to learn the basics. At more traditional schools you wear a white belt through all the kyu ranks. At shodan (black belt) you finally qualify to train with the dojo's main instructor and start learning the hard stuff. It's when your training really starts, not ends.

that's one reason they were banned here in the UK for sometime as kids were even making their own and injuring themselves. Cartoons where heroes used nunchucks like ThunderCats and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles were censored here (The latter being renamed Teenage Mutant HERO Turtles cos ninjas weren't seen as kid-friendly). The constant cutting of Michaelangelo's scenes led to the producers deciding he'll used a grappling hook type of thing instead in later seasons. Eventually those restrictions were lifted before the 2003 series and even reruns of the 80s show and now shown in their original uncensored 'Ninja Turtles' form.
@Maladjester20 күн бұрын
@@CarniviusPrime Censorship is insidious. I used to watch the old Ninja Turtles cartoon (in America) and I'd have to say it's hard to get more harmless than that.
@CarniviusPrime19 күн бұрын
@@Maladjester yeah, it's harmless and some folk say "why weren't the scenes with swords and sais cut since they're more dangerous than nunchucks" but kids weren't as easily able to make those like they made nunchucks, often with two wooden sticks and a rope if they didn't have a chain. :P I'm not saying Mikey was responsible for any injuries himself but kids had been hurting themselves swinging chucks about before TMNT aired here in the UK. Cos some kids are just stupid. :P The 1990 movie wasn't censored (and kept the 'Ninja' name) as it could have an age rating that a tv cartoon couldn't.

I don't think Shannon has ever taught martial arts, only trained. A lot of people mix up her and Bruce's goddaughter, Diana Lee Inosanto, who got attention recently for being in the Mandalorian and Ahsoka. Diana's father is Dan Inosanto, a friend and student of Bruce's who was appointed as one of three students who taught at Bruce's schools. He also introduced Bruce to the nunchaku and was the stick fighter in Game of Death. Diana has taught martial arts along with her husband Ron Baliki, who was a top student of her father and has been a stunt man and coordinator for films, including several Seagal films where he played henchmen that "fought" Sifu Seagal. He fought Seagal using a knife against a sword in "A Good Man."

Weirdly, despite looking and being able to move so much like him, Bejue was only Jean-Claude's stunt double on a couple of things and is otherwise just listed as a personal assistant. No idea if that meant he helped with training or just fetched coffee (he's also got a credit for catering). It is supposed to be based on the series that Bruce once pitched and that David Carradine's "Kung Fu" series supposedly ripped off because they wanted a white lead actor (which has been disputed). But the show doesn't follow Bruce's storyline much at all from what I can tell, likely (and ironically) so it doesn't seem too close to "Kung Fu" since it was also supposed to be about a wandering martial arts warrior in 1800's America. I watched a little of the show as a Bruce fan, but the lead doesn't have any of the charisma Bruce had.

Remember this movie back in the day...Almost not passed it for rent! Death Match with Mattias Hues is like hundred times better if you want this 90s martial arts underground Cagefighting Pitfighter kind of movie 🙂
