Being 18 right out of high school Lou Reed is the reason I picked up a guitar. Lou is my guardian angel.

And what a glorious time it was in 1985 to be 18 and discovering Lou - I turned 19 that year and was a new devotee also - I have this CD 💿 somewhere 🎸 🎶 😎.

Great song! Dont understand the obsession with underated though. My personal favourite Lou Reed album is 'Set the Twilight Reeling' which I've never seen get a mention as one of his best. The much derided Rock and Roll Heart has a couple of high spots too. Of course New York/ Transformer/ Berlin/The Blue Mask are deservedly praised but what does it matter how any of them are rated? They are all out there to be discovered, explored and enjoyed. If you relisten something new might strike you and change the ranking anyway! Lou left a great legacy!

I bought this and Rock N’ Roll Heart long ago when I moved out. New Sensations is really amazing; especially when you compare it some of the not-so-great Lou Reed albums from the same decade.

For the most part you have to be in your late 50s or older to be aware of this song. That or be a devotee of Lou’s entire breadth of work. I’m chuffed that I still understand that the Sam of “Sam’s play” in this song is actor/playwright Sam Sheppard… 🎸🎶 🖊️ 📝 🎭🥰.
@brainybroccoli44998 ай бұрын
Oh! And Martin (Marty) Scorsese gets a mention in the song also (missed that reference)….”he talks about seeing Sam Sheppard’s play, ‘Fool For Love’, which had just opened off-Broadway (and which he refers to throughout the song as “True Love,” probably because it scanned better. Doin’ the things that he wants to 🎸🎶😎).”

@Brad Hahn.. is Lou referencing Johnny Thunders..?? Do you (or anyone really ?) Know?
@gabriels.s.basilio3 жыл бұрын
@@julietsilver2033 i think that he is refering to a character of Mean Streets (1973) played by Robert De Niro, named Johnny Boy, cause in the other line he says "Travis Bickle" , other character of a movie played by De Niro, named Taxi Driver (1976)
@julietsilver20333 жыл бұрын
@@gabriels.s.basilio Of course!!You're right~(i love both film's & De Niro) both his Mean Street's character Johnny Boy & Travis Bickle (Taxi) "growing up on the mean streets of New York' doing the things they want to🎶 its obvious & didn't occur to me as I didn't listen to the words/lyrics properly so thanks for your insight!! The other night we went to see Sam's play Doin' the things that we want to It was very physical it held you to the stage Doin' the things that he wants to Doin' the things that he wants to The guy's a cowboy from some rodeo Doin' the things that he wants to The girl had once loved him, but now she want to go Doin' the things that she wants to Doin' the things that she wants to The man was bullish, the woman was a tease Doin' the things that they want to They fought with their words, their bodies and their deeds Doin' the things that they want to When they finished fighting, they exited the stage Doin' the things that they want to I was firmly struck by the way they had behaved Doin' the things that they want to Doin' the things that they want to Hey 🎵🎶🎵🎶 It reminds me of the movies marty made about new york (Doin' the things that he wants to) Those frank and brutal movies that are so brilliant (Doin' the things that he wants to) "True love" meet "the raging bull" (Doin' the things that he wants to) They're very inspirational, I love the things they do (Doin' the things that he wants to) Doin' the things that I want to There's not much you hear on the radio today (Doin' the things that we want to) But you could still see a movie or a play (Doin' the things that we want to) Here's to "travis bickle" and here's "johnny boy" (Doin' the things that we want to) Growing up in the mean streets of new york (Doin' the things that we want to) I wrote this song 'cause I'd like to shake your hand (Doin' the things that we want to) In a way you guys are the best friends I ever had (Doin' the things that we want to) Doin' the things that we want to That we want to A true love
