As an 18yr old farm boy I went to this concert in 1973 and sat in the fifth row in a small theater. Lou came out looking like a ghost in white pancake makeup. Once the actual tune starts. he plays nice accompaniment to Lou, but I would have preferred Sterling Morrison.

This album and it's partner Lou Reed Live are probably the best double album that isn't a double album. Equally, the band behind Lou - Hunter, Wagner, Colcord, Glan, John, are probably the tightest band no-one's ever heard of. Anyway the relationship was short lived; presumably Lou wasn't taking any risks on being upstaged or typecast.

Lou cruised lazily on his legend for decades . But where did this legend come from ? Alot of it came from this album . A strange mix of sloppiness and discipline , it builds from here into really riveting intensity . A part of the message seemed to be that he could give a honk . And audiences loved that . But deep in the songs is a special intelligence , and oh yeah - he DID care , after all . Just not about what you would guess . And he brought the word from the streets . WE MISS YOU LOU REED !

If you are from a certain time, this genre, and for me this album (probably more than any other I can think of) reflects the disconnected, anomie-like angst that was part of the post psychedelic milieu. Back then it was mostly about Steve Hunter's amazing guitar work, but nowadays any discussions about "you only get 10 albums on a deserted isle" must include this album. Those who were in HS between '69 and '79 probably know what I'm saying. Agree? What are the other 9 albums that you must have on the island? I'll just add Robin Trower's Bridge Of Sighs (also , I believe 1973) and leave it at that. I believe this was released in '73 and I'm pretty sure I first listened to it very shortly after it was released so I've listened to the entire album literally hundreds of times. And yet it still evokes a certain lonely, outside-looking-in, almost existential feeling. While White Light/White Heat would be my next choice, the elongated version of Heroin on this album is what makes it such a classic.
@sebatianalvarado71712 жыл бұрын
id agree with those 2 ..but people forget ... lou reed live (cap on, sunglasses and stars on collar ) is the rest of these r n r animal tour recordings ... which not many know .... 3rd record for island for me ... tim buckley ..greetings from LA '74.... and one of ROY BUCHANANS FIRST 2 or 3 RECORDS(maybe 2 by roy ) ... so theres 4/5 records ....

@@leesakowski9145 as I said, a four chord song lends itself to a whole bunch of adaptability. You really don't need the Bmin, it just sounds better with it in there otherwise you've got to double up on the A or D. They were probably too drunk at the time to get it right. It's a great title and album cover, and the music is fun, even though everybody's raving about the intro which has essentially nothing to do with Lou Reed - I guess he was trying to lure in the 'heavy rock' market (that was a term back then). But what let him down was that he wasn't really that good at portraying the "rock'n'roll animal" - if you look at interviews from this period, he's constantly trying to be provocative in the most pathetic teenager style, "mammoth fail" as the kids used to say a while ago. Also if you see clips of live performances from 73-74... meh. It's a shame because ... he could and did do better than that. Still, fun record though.
