This 1936 Bentley Derby in that beige paintwork really exudes style and elegance from every angle! The beautiful aluminum body is complemented by that large front grille, the headlights, chrome guides and the striking front symbol of the Bentley Wings, which fold down so as not to hit the engine cover; in addition, by the elegant fuel cap in the form of a door with a handle and the beautiful spoked wheels. A comfortable and luxurious interior, with all those wooden details, including that beautiful instrument panel with controls on the steering wheel itself, along with the folding roof and that interesting switch that controls the folding exterior traffic signal. The 6-cylinder engine sounded very good; and I liked the way the smoke came out of its exhaust pipe. Finally, the ride at the end was great; apart from the fact that it seemed like we were traveling back in time, it was perceived that the vehicle was quite smooth and fast (impressive for a 1936 car!). Congratulations to Mr. Styers for bringing this amazing restoration to completion after 12 years! Best regards, Lou!

What a grand ol' car! 12 years for the restoration and 2 years for the book, all of which was certainly a labor of love for Mr. Styers. And wow, the custom metal work and welding he accomplished, too. The end result is just fantastic. Thanks, Lou!

The sophistication and the engineering on that car was very impressive. He mentioned about a lover at the beginning and I wasn’t looking at it, but he said it would firm up the ride and here’s a car that was built in 1930. I will have to rethink my opinion on older cars, such as this British at that

In cars of this vintage, the bearing on the steering shaft was often made of "white metal", which we might call "pot metal" today. The problem with the "white metal" bushings, over the decades, is that it swells, causing more friction on the steering shaft. What we found after trying different lubricants and spinning the shaft in the bearing, we could free it up so the steering was easier. But, when you would let it sit for awhile, it would stiffen up again. We realized the futility of this, so we just machined a new bearing out of oilite bronze. It solved the problem.

It’s interesting that Steve is shifting right-handed, so the shift lever is over by the right door. Modern manual transmission cars with right-hand drive have the gear shift between the front seats, so you have to shift left-handed. I wonder when the auto companies standardized on having the floor shift in the middle? I’m guessing it’s when they quit having manual shift levers on the steering column and having them exclusively on the floor. I travel to the UK occasionally, and shifting lefty is the trickiest thing to do for me. Occasionally on the motorway when I want to go from 4th to 5th, I accidentally jam it into 3rd. The rental car doesn’t like that!! 😝 Unlike here in North America, there are lots of rental cars in the UK with stick shifts, and they are a lot cheaper to rent than an automatic!
