Back in the early-70's, we had one of these the victim of a bash-a-car event. I was amazed at how tuff it was, taking the blows of a 5 pound sledge hammer. Looking back, these were really cool, especially if they had the R2 V8. It's sad that they changed the transmission. On the originals with OD, if the OD handle was in the engaged position, when shifted into reverse, it would disengage the OD by automatically pushing the OD handle back to the disengaged position. This sometimes presented a problem if not lubed or adjusted correctly. It could be fixed. Hopefully they kept the OD transmission.

Wow. I was 10 years old in 1964 and an avowed car nut, even in my childhood. Knew a lot of the details and stats. However, I never knew the Studebakers of that era had the “Hill Holder” feature on the manual transmission! Many, many years later, Subaru touted this feature on their cars as being “so innovative!” Being from hilly Missouri, I wish our ‘65 Falcon stick shift would have had a Hill Holder. That’s the first car my dad let me drive for practice - on side streets and parking lots, since I was only 13 then. It was scary and difficult to get my foot off the brake, onto the gas, and smoothly let out the clutch! I bucked it, jumped it, and killed it many times! But even today, 2 of my 4 vehicles are stick shifts. It’s a Badge of Courage, a Rite of Passage. And yes, I demanded my 2 sons learn to drive sticks!!! As Lou always says, “THE CORRECT NUMBER OF PEDALS!”

I got to see one of these at a car show this past summer and it was awesome. I enjoy looking at usual car show attendees IE Chevelles, Camaros, Mustangs, and etcetera but there is something special about spotting a Studebaker. I don’t know if this is true across the board but Studebaker people are so cool and really enjoy talking about their machines. Most car Fellas like to talk about their cars but there something different about Studebaker Guys.

My all time favorite color arrangement for my all time favorite classic wagon is Jet Black with a Contadina Red interior, high end exterior trim, no roof rack, Flightomatic, R2 Eight, Power steering and Brakes., Beauty Vanity Glovebox option, preferably delete roof option, the latter of which considering the leakage issues, makes forfeiting the sliding roof interest value a moot point.

I've had many late model Studebaker's, but not this one and I've always wanted one. IMO, the most important new station wagon development since the all steel wagon. The 63 is very Mercedes looking. This is an entry level Commander, just one step above the stripped Challenger series and below the very well equipped Daytona series. Still, while austere, this Commander looks very clean and straight. Unique really fits this car. We are used to those high mounted rear taillights in 2024, but Studebaker had them in 1963! Also, they curved around to be seen from the side. A feature not seen on other American cars for another 4 or 5 years.

I can only IMAGINE, & figure a few WAGONAIRES/Larks /Trucks etc., were loaded with SUPERCHARGED, MANUEL TRANNY, Heavy Duty paks, a few Dealer OPTIONS!, !!!!! Nice story shared by the owner of this surviving 1964 Studebaker Commander Wagonaire in White! For a Station Wagon it has quite an interesting style. I quite liked that feature of the rear sliding roof, and how that striking chrome "folding" handle on the hatch raised the glass to seal the compartment. Also, its red interior looked good; with seat belts for the rear seats, its three large instrument panel dials and the attractive two-tone chrome steering wheel. It was a pleasure to be able to look at all those manuals, brochures and that "Life" magazine with actress Yvette Mimieux on the cover (special mention for the old photo of Allen next to his Studebaker and for the scale model car in Orange, hehe). The truth is that I was surprised by how its "Ultra Power" 259 CI V8 sounded. To finish, the ride on that long and flat road was excellent; while the countryside in the background and the bright sun did the rest. Oh, and for the interesting demonstration of the vehicle's ability to not roll backwards even when in neutral on that incline! Congratulations to Dave, and his dad, for this classic; and for sharing their valuable knowledge and experience! Kind regards, Lou!

Dear lou et al listening and watching. Wagonaire with the Avanti R2 engine and " basic" auto transmission NOT the Avanti transmission AND a highway rear axle ratio the wagonaire was tested by motor trend magazine. Same time frame the Chev 409 4 speed and the olds Starfire were tested. Results? The Stude wagon was only one second slower in the quarter mile than the " fabled" 409. Yet weighed MORE than the Chev sedan by hundreds of pounds. With a 3:73 rear axle and Avanti transmission it would Have BEAT the 409! Meanwhile the olds Starfire sedan with a much larger engine and weighing roughly the same as the Stude wagon WAS a second SLOWER than the Stude. If the wagon would have had the Avanti R3 engine it would have literally decimated most big 3 cars of the era despite their enormous engine size by comparison. Little known facts that even car people know little about.
