When I was 14 my parents were shopping the 64 Starfire on the showroom floor. It was stunningly beautiful. However they got their best deal on a 1964 Buick Wildcat with the optional 340hp nail head. But the Starfire with its Rocket V8 and the Buick Wildcat and 421 Pontiac Catalina were really America's answer to european Gran Tourismo automobiles. PS. Remember my mother dusting some young guy at a stop light in his TR6 with the Wildcat and ma laughing so much that I felt bad for him.

Somone in my neighborhood in the late 1960's use to drive by in a silver Starfire, I remember it catching my attention as it drove by. Beautiful car. The brushed aluminum stripe on the side caught my attention. I had never heard of a Starfire as they didn't make them anymore and I could not understand why. It had the sex appeal that Pontiacs had but it was an Oldsmobile. I remember being shocked at how nice it was.

Lou, you've been on a hot streak the past few days, for sure! The '57 T-Bird, now this '62 Starfire. You always do an incredible job, and this is no exception. In my opinion the '62 Olds line (aside from Starfire!) was the best since the '57 Olds, and revived the oval-theme that model had; especially in the front and back. The '58 & '59 Oldsmobiles were kind of 'out there' in different ways, the '60 didn't look like an Oldsmobile but at least it wasn't ugly, like the '61. Olds REALLY turned a sow's ear into a silk purse with the '62, from every angle, inside and out! Thank you!

It was late 1961 and I was in High School and the 62 Starfires came out. This was also the high water mark of the second wave of Custom Car shows. The Starfires came with either a Red or Blue Candy like factory paint option. And with that paint especially the red nd the Chrome side strip it seemed to us kids that the custom car shows had now extended to the streets. Olds sold a TON of the starfires. One guy we knew punched louvers in his hood. But no matter, the Olds SF was just THE car of that year. They also had an engine which with a better induction and exhaust you could add almost 20% more power. That engine has really bulletproof RELIABILITY. A.LOT of gassers and rods of that era used Olds 331"s or 394's for power with reliability. The BIG problem with SOME Olds engines was the pump upon the hydrallis lifters. Alot of shops simply put in more reliable but more noisy mechanical lifters. But when you changed lifters, the temptation was to put in a better cam. Even a roller if you were brave. Remember the Howard's lifters which you could set to advance or retard individual values timing? The biggest problem with the Olds's was the TRANSMISSIONS. The Jerks who were running GM decided to put in a POWERGLIDE 2speed tranny or a slim jim. When you went to buy an Olds you HAD to make Sure that it was a standard 3 or 4 speed. Otherwise you may have a great engine but you then had to put in an adapted Poncho hydro. We bought a 63 98 and found we got a powerglide and it was awful. Typical GM non- sense games. Anyway, all now are great memories except for that powerglide.....

The 61 and 62 Starfire's were beautiful cars (especially in black). Those cars had such fantastic interiors with so much detail in the bucket seats, dash and steering wheel. I had a 61 Super 88 bubble top that was so unique. The jet age and the space age of that period all came together and really affected the style of those cars. I am a Pontiac guy like George but you can tell that that Starfire was just an upgrade all around as compared to the also very nice 62 Pontiac Grand Prix. Thanks to George and Lou.

What a beauty! When I was a kid an Oldsmobile like this was a big deal. The big stainless trim on the side is similar to that of some models of the 1964 Chevy. By the way, I think that device under the hood at 3:10 is a vacuum-powered actuator controlled by the buttons labeled "Summer Ventilation" at 9:52, although it looks like the link on the actuator is not connected to the vent flapper.

The servo at 3:10 probably belongs to the summer ventilation controls and looks like it opens the fresh air door. I don't think either of my Starfires had that option. Also, it looks like to me anyway that the servo link is not attached to the arm for the fresh air door for it to function properly but that could just be your camera angle throwing me off. On the speedometer, mine had the barrel option and also it had some sort of speed cap switch you could set so that if your speed went over what you set, the dash would buzz. I don't think any speed control was available back then from the factory. Now some trivia about me and my Starfires. 1. That was the first engine I ever overhauled which pushed me into a career of auto mechanics and 15 years as a Mopar dealership mechanic. 2. While I had the engine out, my cousin who dabbled in mechanics offered to overhaul the transmission for me. There was nothing wrong with it but seeings how I thought he knew more than me, I let him do it. Once I got everything back together, the car only had one gear forward and that was 'first'. I believe reverse also worked. So for about 6 months (as I had no money to fix anything), I tooled around Omaha in just first gear. 3. I also lost my... well that is another story :-)

A school buddy of mine's mom had a '64 Olds 88 with also a 394. But, only with the 2-barrel more standard version. Unlike that highest for that engine series' horsepower Starfire featured on your video, that '64 88 couln't burn rubber with that sluggish Hydramatic, no matter what his older brother tried. I had the last model year Starfire of which costed more than the 98 did when new. Of course, I bought it used for only $75. Sadly, that was the highest horsepower year for that last year model. It gave way to the Toronado of which that was the only year the Starfire had to compete with it. The Toronado had 10 more horsepower. The interior was less sporty and the vehicle might even have been heavier than the rear drive full-sized Oldsmobiles (Please correct me, if I'm wrong). The center of gravity of the Toronado was higher, due to the engine being mounted over the transaxle and the weight ration was also more biased towards the front. This did not help with the vehicle's handling. Although, it did win the Pike's Peak trophy for either 1966 or '7. The Starfire tradition carried over to the Delta Custom in 1967, whereapon the Starfire engine was standard and the other Starfire options such as a limited slip differential and performance front and rear stabiliser bars were made available

Hi Peter, Glad to read you have some fun trucks :-) Happy to read you're enjoying the video too, and check out some the the past videos. Please remember to watch the commercials at the beginning of the video (or at least the ones you can), as that's how I get paid so I can keep sharing with you, Cheers, Lou

I’m so happy this isn’t for sale. I would buy it and not worry about the price. Love the metallic red upholstery. What great shape this is in too. Iconic. Rear bumpers were tucked into the body. My aunt had a new red one just like it.

Two ashtrays on the dash!! That's was when the whole family smoked!! When I was little the neighbors had a red Starfire hardtop. I thought it was stunning. Ford copied that front end (sort of) on the 67-69 T-Birds.

I could only wish the "immaculate minds" of GM could have sold Pontiac, Oldsmobile, Saturn into private hands, instead of letting these legendary marques die that horrific death that they did, they shame of it all.

@@loucostabile my father used to say something, not verbatim, is do you know the great thing about driving a convertible. Not putting the top down but knowing you can if you want to. Oh I had to flip up the visors. You know the deal. Unzip the 69 Mustang window: if you want to okay but you're zipping it up before you leave. And! Unzipping the back window for extra air. No AC. Roll up windows, turn on heat. Cheating.

Did a 1962 Oldsmobile have a narrower track, than a 1962 Wide-Track Pontiac had? Did a '62 Pontiac have a wider track, than other '62 General Motors cars had? This might have made '62 Pontiacs safer to drive, than other '62 GM cars. My father had a 1960 Oldsmobile Dynamic 88, with a color-change speedometer. This might have been his favorite car.
@loucostabile3 жыл бұрын
Hi Michael Mott, the color change speedometer seems motivating to get it to "Red" :-) Not sure on the dimensions of the car, however if there are "trunk & treats" there can be a time period correct brochure and that may have the dimensions, Lou
