That bullet speedometer is the coolest thing Chrysler ever came up with. My dad had one of these, but his was not a convertible. This baby is so sweet. Clock even works. Button on the floor to change radio stations. Wow wow wow

I always liked these. I live in the metro Detroit area also and it's amazing how impossible it has become to get classics serviced lately. You'd think the "motor city" where these cars originated would be the premier go-to for restoration work but it's just the opposite. Can't even get anyone to put the damn tires on for you anymore...as if it makes any difference that it's a "classic" car, a tire is a tire and a hub is a hub. But go tell that to a town that doesn't want to work. Beautiful car, it's a keeper!

Even though this car was made a few years before I was born. Still saw these cars on the road as a kid. To really experience and appreciate them you have to drive or ride in one. Cars were so much cooler and the body lines they combined to create them. A great customizer from the late 50's and 60's said cars today look like jelly beans.

Take note of the Alternator which Chrysler first put in the 1960 Valiant . There were only 1280 300 G model that year with only 337 as Convertibles. Those 15" rims were to allow for larger brake drums since the 14" in 1960 had owners noticing that the HP and weight needed better stopping power. The 300 G was about $5800.00 before Options which could push it over $6000 and then you had the Convertible which added more to the price which might be why there's no AC . The 300 G was nick named the Bankers Hotrod by the price and 375 HP 413 where only 5 of 400 HP version were made. Very nice highway cruiser .

Chrysler also put alternators in the small handful (9 to 15?) of the 1960 Pont-a-Moussin 4-speed 300-F cars. Way ahead of GM and Ford in '61 in installing alternators in all its cars. Brakes and brake drums were actually the same for '61 and '60, although you're correct that Chrysler did increase the wheel/tire size on its '61 models to 15" from the '14" in '60. You'll notice that the '61 hubcaps have slots near their perimeter, for better cooling and, therefore, better braking as Gary mentions. '60 hubcaps did not have these slots. The brake shoe size for '61/'60 300s was 12"x2.5"x0.2".
@garywood9525
@garywood9525 5 жыл бұрын
@@pambyerly1708 What were the Drum sizes because the Bindings could have a larger surface where a bigger Drum would only need a minor change to the backing Plate for the Wheel Cylinder and lower pivot point. Are the part #'s the same for drums in 60-61 . btw I said that the Alternator was first used in the Valiant in 1960 ....not that it was the only car that year . All valiants came with one as a standard production car.

@@garywood9525 Gary - The '60 300-F and '61 300-G drums are the same part number. I see I replied under my daughter Pam's name. This is Noel Hastalis responding. I confirmed this with one of our 300 Club resident experts. I have the 1960 Chrysler parts book, but not the 1961, for reference.

Those dash lights were/are really cool and unique. They work alot like a fluorescent light and have a capacitor that needed to be fully discharged before servicing 1, otherwise 1 could get zapped! Problem was, like all fluorescent lights, they didn't like cold temps and needed to get warmed up before they worked right. This complaint was 1 reason Chrysler went to a flooded and later back lit dash design soon afterward. The problem was the ballast was simply too cold to properly operate. Very nice car and am happy it doesn't have the rare but ugly toilet seat rear trunk lid treatment. I've seen several 60's and 2 61s with that.. IMO doesn't look right; tacked on!

Go back a bit the 392 HEMI, 354 HEMI , 331 HEMI. RED RAM HEMI AND NOW..... MOPAR GUYS. ARE TAKING 318s which we used for winter/ daily car engines and getting 500 HP A strong" long lasting build. A 360, its also getting pumped up to over that and are being used in place od 340's and 383s because theb340"s became rarer and rarer and you can make the HP NUMBERS. MOPARS WITH ALL THE ENGINES, ALL THE DIFFERENT MUSCLE CARS AND MUSCLE TO CHOOSE FROM , FROM 60 TP 76 ( ALTHOUGH 71 IS THE LAST BIG MUSCLE YEAR) AND THEN AGAIN THE LATE 90'S TO NOW. THERE WERE YEARS WITH THE OMNI GLH AND GLHS, TIRBO DAYTONAS, SHELBY CHARGERS ETC THAT WITH a LITTLE WORK WOULD GIVE YOU 11s and 12s all day on the street but put some more into them, you were in 10s and in some cases well you get the hint. Actress Janis Paige drove a red one of these in the movie Bachelor in Paradise. www.imcdb.org/v479209.html That movie is full of Mopar convertibles, with Bob Hope driving a Dodge Polara and Lana Turner driving a Plymouth Fury, all 1961s.
