On “My Car Story” we're in Rosemont IL at the Muscle Car and Corvette Nationals on 11-21-19.
We’re looking at a 1969 Chevrolet Camaro in Blue Paint. The car features the 427 CI ZL1 V8 all aluminum engine.
The car's Owner is Eddie Martin. Eddie’s had this car since 1976. Eddie shares when he bought the car it was challenging to verify it was ZL1, and after years of research he was finally able to verify this is a car with a very special engine. This car sounds GREAT!
To see details on the Muscle Car and Corvette Nationals show, go to www.MCACN.com
ENJOY!

Eddie is a great guy too! I've been lucky enough to take a ride to the drag strip in Collinsville, Il. for the SuperCar reunion in Eddie's ZL-1. Have video of it as well. This Camaro couldn't have found a better caretaker than Eddie (and Donna) ! BTW, the car next to Eddie's is Larry Christiansen's 1969 Pilot Z28. Larry knows a ton about Camaro's-and is a friend as well.

Awesome 69 ZL1 Camaro! Those engines are no joke. I put a ZL1 cam in my 427, used a pair of those Winters aluminum heads, only 10.5 compression and a factory GM aluminum intake manifold and got my Camaro to run an 11.83 @ 116 mph in the 1/4 mile. 😎🏁

I remember seeing a car identical to that on one of those TV auctions in like 2006 or 7, right around there and it sold for like 3 million dollars. It was the most expensive car at the auction. That was on the Speed Channel.

I'm a Mopar guy but these are without a doubt my favorite cars ever made by Chevy. The first gen Camaros are great looking cars and the all aluminum ZL-1 427 is the meanest factory built Chevy big block ever. They probably made between 525-550 horses at the crankshaft all while weighing about the same as a 327 small block. This car is just awesome no matter if you're a GM, Ford, or Mopar guy. Super rare. I wonder how many real 69 ZL-1 Camaro's still exist

Hi Lou, Around the corner from where I live in Port Melbourne, Australia is the HQ of Bob Jane T-Mart. Back in 1969 Bob Jane flew over to the States & bought 2 of these ZL1 Camaro's back to Australia. Bob Jane was a racer here back in say similar to a Carroll Shelby & owned & operated the largest tyre franchise in Australia & still is. So when I walk the dogs, drive to work everyday I get a glimpse of an original 1969 Hugger Orange ZL1 Camaro. Unfortunately it hasn't got the original motor that is long gone but it is what it is. Another great video Lou. YOUR number 1 Fan in Australia Louis Kats from Melbourne Australia ☺ 👍

And Behold New sitting in the showroom was a Black on Black Nova, I went over to give it a closer look and it was a $3300.00 with a $3000.00 Eng. Option the ZL1 all aluminum 427 cu in. Special Order through Dick Harrell Chevrolet. Now $6,300.00 was more than a 427 Corvette at the time and i have been kicking myself for 51 Years for not buying that car. I like that this owner kept the modifications like headers, ladder bars, tach etc. They were built with some basic parts with the expectation that those parts would be replaced with upgrades for drag racing. Their performance potential was limited by leaving them all stock. Most guys want to retain it's value and trailer it around. I would put upgraded wheels, tires, and suspension on one of these and drive the hell out of it.

Back in 71 had a hot rod guy next door to me , He always had motors that most people could not get or have, Some how he had a Zl1 on his engine stand with blankets over the motor, He told me that it was a ZL1 and it was in a Camaro but the car was in a roll over smash up on some track in eastern part of the United States, He did not have the 4 speed that was in that Car or the Rear end just the motor and the carb set up and the stock exhaust manifolds so after a while he got a 69 RS Camaro that had no motor but it had a M21 4 speed and a 12 bolt rear end. So he put that 427 in that Camaro and that looked neat and ran good as well. Then sometime in the 90s he split with his wife and had to sell that car and give her 1/2 of the funds, Man what a downer loss, I am talking about the Camaro..

These days every common production car has an all aluminum engine. That was absolutely not the case in 1969. Aluminum was still an exotic, rare, and expensive metal. Most engines were all cast iron. Which is heavier and thus leads to less performance. That’s part of what makes these ZL1s so special.

I met a guy at my local car show that claims he owns an aluminum block 1969 Camaro. Not sure if the engine is original to the car, my guess is probably not but the engine could be from one of the disappeared originals.

There were only 69 of these made it out of the factory 300 were scrapped and maintenance men use torches and blowed holes in the motor so the motor couldn't be retrieved from the car after it was crushed general motors considered this car a insurance liability because it didn't come with a blow proof bell housing that would release a flywheel and cut the door hinges off the car sitting next to it my father worked in this factory where they came from I had a COPO Camaro cast iron drag raced it religiously for four and a half years never wrecked it never killed nobody did the grace of God I beat the living hell out of the ultimate heartbeat of America thank you Lord

This is my favorite Camaro - the ultimate. I have a video of the 1987 Supercar Showdown on my channel which is the "grandfather" to the pure stock drag racing events. There is an "authentic" 1969 ZL-1 Camaro that was entered and made it to the quarter-finals, owned by Rusty Symmes. It was running 12.7 at about 108 - in complete stock form. I don't think you would find any authentic ZL-1's in today's events, too valuable!!!

Always found it interesting that 1969 was the only year for this "second-gen" Camaro/Firebird. I like it the best if for that reason alone, besides being plain beautiful. I'm partial to first gens as my mom bought a brand new Firebird when they first came out.

Hi Lou. Thanks for this episode. That engine rev sounded like it echoed through the entire hall!! I bet one of the best sounding vehicles on your channel. One question, I don't know if anyone else asked, at 4:25 when you look at the pedals the brake has a shiny silver disc on it. I don't recall seeing it on other cars. Do know why?

Another Great Car Lou ! 120 mph Speedo seems so Inadequate for that All Aluminum 427 Motor. I think a 160 mph Speedo would have been a Better Match to its Potential. I mean from GM, from the Factory, when this Beauty was new, of course. Also a Factory in Dash 8,000 RPM Tach should have been Standard. That 427 was meant to be Driven with a Capital "D". My compliments to the owner for sharing, Thank you !

A good upgrade is to put 2 block heaters (freeze plug style), 1 on each side of the engine. Reason being the valve lash shrinks .012" from hot lash to cold lash. Friendly for the valve train and cam when starting cold.
