My first exposure to this car was at a stoplight in Union NJ in 1976 on my way to school at Lincoln Tech. I was driving my '70 Super Bee when this thing pulled up next to me. I had never seen anything like it and for a second I thought it was the Batmobile. I had about 30 seconds to stare at this thing, but I was mesmerized by that roof. It wasn't till years later I saw a picture of this and realized what I had seen. This car is unreal, and I learned so much more about it from this video. Do us all a favor Lou and keep these videos coming!

A very very special car. I've only ever seen one, hidden away in a barn far out in the country, owned by an eccentric and reclusive Cadillac collector. There were other nice old Cadillacs in the garage, but this one was out in s barn, completely covered and i had to promise I'd never say a word about having seen it, which I didn't. It was stunning and in absolutely perfect shape. That was in 1987 and at that time i didn't even know that such a car existed. I had never before seen a stainless steel roof or suicide doors on a Cadillac. That was 37 years ago now and i still consuder it an unexpected thrill of a lifetime.

@@razvancalin6453I really don't. I'm a bit of an odd duck myself. At that time I had a 61 Fleetwood which I dearly loved and it was in nearly perfect shape but some odd part broke I can't remember now what it was and I searched and searched and couldn't find a source and I was at a car meet and I got overheard me asking another guy about it. And after we finish talking this third guy stepped up and said quietly I think I can help you. And I said okay.?? And he said but you must not tell how you found out. And that's when he said I know this eccentric old guy in the country I couldn't guarantee it, but I could almost tell you for sure he will have that part. And he told me where he lived which was about a hundred miles in the country. So he said this is his name and address and go to his house, do not call him or he will tell you not to come. And he said but once you get there he will be the nicest guy you have ever met. And if he wants to know how you found out you just say someone told you a long time ago but you can no longer remember who. And so I did as I was told and drove straight to the guy's house, he was about I would say 70 and he lived alone with his 90 year old mother. True to the guy's description he was just as nice as anyone could have ever been, in fact seem to enjoy the fact that I stopped by..
@watthaile20533 ай бұрын
@@razvancalin6453he told me very specifically how to tell the repairman to install the park properly so that it would not be damaged and would work. We had a lovely time visiting and then at the end kind of on the spur of the moment is when he decided to show me the car in the barn. I took the part and it worked beautifully. The old guy told me to come back and he would help me anytime I had any further problems, except I never did. I didn't continue going to the car meetings even though I kept the car for many years. So I have no idea what happened to the guy or the collection. The guy seemed to be about 70-75 at the time and that was 37 years ago. He seemed to be a single man living with his mother, so God only knows what became of those lovely cars.

Lou, as a kid, me and my friend would get on a bus and go the annual auto show located in downtown Baltimore in the '50's. In 1957, he and I went to the show and saw something that was a wow moment. A midnight blue car with a stainless steel top. The interior was also impressive. I looked at the sticker price and commented to my buddy, " Any one paying THAT kind of money for a car is crazy!". Just remember, the price f a typical row house was around $9K. I'm now in my 80's and still remember this car!

Oh, this 1958 Cadillac Eldorado Brougham is one of the most stylish and elegant I have ever seen! Unique styling, combined with that beautiful black paint, stainless steel roof, bubble-type windshield, chrome-finished rear fenders, striking air intakes and the iconic front dominated by that large grille, quad headlights and the unique bullet or Dagmar bumper. Gorgeous interior, with black and cream upholstered seats, chrome dashboard, radio and steering wheel with some switches, even the doors, which control surprising functions, such as the electric seats or the trunk release in the glove box, in addition to many other very advanced features for the time. Extraordinary final ride, with a docile ride, while its powerful 365CI V8 moved it smoothly along the road. So, congratulations to its owner, Mr. Plunkett, for this true gem that even has the added value of having belonged to the legendary actor Bob Hope! Kind regards, Lou!

It's an amazing car, sharing a lot of the look of the rest of the line but completely unique and slicker and more sophisticated than the rest - although by 1958 its soft rounded Harley Earl look was really over with. With its total uniqueness in every way, luxury, and very low production numbers I'm surprised that a really good one isn't a million dollars. I'm also surprised that this one still has its air suspension working and the airbags haven't been replaced by coil springs (like almost all the other 1958 GM and Ford air suspensions cars had done pretty quickly).

It's amazing to compare this 1958 model with the 1959 model (which looks like the 1963 Sedan Deville). Huge amount of change in just one model year.

Hi Vicious Poodle, "Huge amount of change in just one model year." I agree, Lou
@viciouspoodle55433 ай бұрын
@@loucostabile And the 1959 model DID NOT have the huge iconic gaudy tail fins of all the other 1959 models and the wrap around windshield. More of a 1960 type tail fin. You should do a video on that car as well!

Always liked the Eldo Brougham. I knew Bob Hope owned one - it's good to know the car is still with us. Quad headlights were a novel feature in 1957-58, but they didn't solely originate with the Eldorado Brougham. The 1957 Lincoln Premiere also featured them.

Costabile comes through with another wonderful presentation. Opinions about the beauty of these GM ‘58’s will vary. My particular view of it is that they are butt ugly, particularly but not exclusively, from over-the-top ornamentation. Thank you so much for these broadcasts, Lou. Parenthetically, it was a pleasure meeting you at the Carlisle Chrysler Nationals in July 2024.
