Mondays worst as less showed up, called in sick, etc. Plants paid union checks on Thursday, so many missed Friday shifts. Tuesdays were best built. I had a 71 hemi / 4 spd RR as this, and drove it hard, fast, and furious in 79..…around SoCal. Lots more cars out there, but hit East coast for more retirement village owned, and discovered AMC. '69 AMX typical, but got a 71 Matador hardtop coupe with "Machine Go" option package. IT drove SO nice. Florida retirement gate tag and AMC bug deflector, compass, and "desert use only" A/C setting, tilt, console, buckets. Miss IT more than hemi $. IF you like these, look at date of production AND fender codes well. 340s were order/produced from Jan 71. And Many of these are built with as many options as $ can find. (This one in Canada, by a TV show shop/dealership.) Ted Stephens in Alabama can give you codes to look for, but "Aero Package" is cool. Includes front bumper "visor applique' ", Air Grabber hood / bulge, rear window louvers, and 70 AAR 'Cuda rear ducktail spoiler (in trunk for dealership install). No front "boomerangs" spoilers IN package, but sometimes ordered with it. (Drag on the street). Mine and next VIN on line had package, only one's I've ever seen with hemi / 4 spd (of 28) in 71. Rear window louvers are rare, as mold broke, so tag may have code, but not installed at factory. And full vinyl top deleted it, when roof area was found marred, needing one, vs repair on the line. $$$ return on basic 383 RR or basic 440 GTX. I did a 71 Sat Sebring + with added color matched AP package . Sweet!
@AMCmachine4 жыл бұрын
@@williamboardman9476 Incredible that you had one of those!! AMC barely advertised the Matador Machine if at all, so rumor has it only about 40 or 50 were sold. Theoretically it could even be had on a Matador wagon or sedan, though it's not known if any were so ordered. It was the often-unsung successor to the 1970 Rebel Machine and the Matador version could be had with 360 or 401 power. I have seen ONE known Matador machine in the muscle car magazines and a few clones online, including a really nice '73 tribute which is of course the same car as a '71.
@williamboardman94764 жыл бұрын
@@AMCmachine I've heard 14 on Matador coupes. Was more of an offered dealer order package with customers wanting Towing ability. I've seen a couple wagons with 401 and towing, amazingly also in same color combo, but can't imagine it being a reduced or limited exterior/ interior availability deal. But with vinyl top as part of it, (not on wagons, but you know AMC, they'd DO anything to sell a unit)....vinyl in white, black, blue, beige, and.....green. Wagons with towing HD list and "Go Machine" package I've seen had buckets, buddy fold down, console and automatic.(Ooooh ! AMC pistol grip), with green interiors and yellow body. As my coupe was, with green top, towing, and 4 speed, with same yellow. It's somewhere around Dawsonville, Ga, where I left it. Gorgeous body, a few holes around where vinyl top was at rear window. No BW trans, no 401 or emblems. I showed it Once, at an Atlanta Regional AMC show, and it did a few parades. Engine went into 69 AMX, with front discs, after snapping trans output shaft, deep inside. Should have done a 71 RWB Donohue NASCAR clone, but had paid only $250 for it, sweet old lady notes on how to start, from her late husband in console, really tight windows (for her to crank, so not used much), trans snap was cost prohibitive vs. driving AMX. Or even towing off as we moved. Mike Gray will find it someday. He just started on an Alabama SP car project. HE also has a sweet yellow w/ wood Ambo wagon. You hear golf tour TV music as it comes in the driveway. "Go" wagons I saw were in NY in like 72 or so, and VA in 88. Syracuse and JMU. Drive safe. I do like that RED 71, very nice people. No scoop on mine or wagons. Those tachs were weak

Lou, thanks again for posting the unique cars as you see them. Very rare color. As a former 426 hemi / 4 spd owner and Driver, I can attest to the MUCH better balance you can feel when driving a 71 / 72 Road Runner with a small block (340). This car came from Indiana, as mine did, from Canadian plant. (Maybe ALL the 71/72 Road Runners did ?) Car was listed by a Canadian Resto / Dealership, for only a very short time. This new owner jumped quick to get it. I was just late calling on same day in December 2019. Gorgeous carb. Front bumper is "loop", of most 71 Chrysler cars, but was known as "Bulldog" look. Also detail in 70 Satellite/ RR/ GTX grille.

I bought and drove a 71 hemi Road Runner, 4 spd in 79 summer. It was new, off a 79 Spring closed Indiana dealership, demo, never sold. Did 71 Indy 500 parade and VIP duty, and showroom display, then stored in service area, covered. Service Office secretary bought for her son in 79 April. I paid for keys and CRAGARs he'd added (and flat spotted Goodyears / road wheels), in mid June. ( "Oil crisis / gas shortage summer). To drive from Memphis to NY, to California. Heavy with hemi, great for Long interstate run, and on wide freeways around So. Cal. This one would be a pleasure, as hot 340, and cool A/C, in and out of city.

Lou, I'm back, couldn't post for a while but everything straight now... I bought a 1971 Road Runner new, bought it from Johnny's County Chrysler-Plymouth in Oaklyn NJ. B-5 blue automatic with 3.55 sure grip, extra heavy duty suspension with 8 inch black steel wheels and dog dish hubcaps and G-60 Goodyear polyglas white letter tires. Bench seat and column shift, unadorned exhaust tips. A very purposeful looking car with a sinister lurk. It made it into 1973 when my wife broadsided a telephone pole during some overly enthusiastic driving. She came out unscathed but my Road Runner was quite scathed, unfortunately.

Well done Kevin and Lou, lovely car. I'm curious though - the photos in the trunk appear to be a different shade of blue, B5 blue (?) and that dealer sticker isn't from the selling dealer ( I thought Kevin said when you asked) so how does that relate to the car (?) except perhaps as an example of what would have been on your mopar back then.

Hi John Clements, Happy to read you enjoy the lovely car :-) Not sure about a different color in the trunk or the sticker question. Hope you see many more cars you enjoy on the Channel, Lou

Car bought by Wisconsin residents, AT an Indiana dealership, likely sold a few times since, at least once by an owner who painted and street raced (tach up on the dash), with added wheels / tires, and stored ( in resto binder pics in trunk). THEN restored / re-created, in Canada, by LEDGENDARY LMC. Sold to this owner. So when asked, Kevin answered No. As not dealer HE bought it from.

Interested to see the yellow headlamps, they really suit. I didn’t know this was ever done in the USA. It was only done in the UK when travelling to Europe where it was standard in France and Italy until the 80s/90s I believe.

340 was lighter, and even in 71, still 275 go or a little less, vs 383 heavy big block, down to 300 hp in 71. Both got you a " std" insurance $ rating. Much more rare with 340, and much better ride / balanced chassis front to rear..= Better DRIVE.
