Just found your post. Thank you for sharing your car. In 1967 I purchased a '62 Polara 500 2 dr hard top (same color scheme in and out) with a 360 hp (dyno tested) 361. Paid $200.00!!! for it. Ran great, and did a little racing with it. Ended up seizing up one of the crank mains. As I was only 17 at the time, I wasn't real successful in repairing, so I piled the heads and manifolds into the trunk and sold it (for $200.00) to the next guy. I'm almost 70 know, and how I would love to have that car again.

When I was in early high school my friend's mom bought a brand new 62 Dodge like this except a wagon. Medium metallic blue with matching interior. It was gorgeous at the time, very smooth, quiet, and fast, and we loved riding in it. Little detail, if you notice, the exterior of the doors flows down from the windows instead of a flat shelf-like design like all the other cars at the time. Loved seeing this one.

You know what I like about Lou? His sometimes odd questions and statements. Others may complain and make rude comments because they are after all, the expert on everything. And experts can't stand a man who just enjoys cars without being a know it all, is comfortable in his own skin, and is not embarrassed by making a mistake here and there. That is what I call a man's man, not an twit who elevates himself by taring others down. God bless you Lou and your family.

Hello Lou! I have ALWAYS loved this design on the 1962 Models including the Plymouth Cousin. It seems to weird when the cars were yachts the year before (and I owned a 1961 Dodge sedan as a collector vehicle in 1995) so they were huge. But the funny part here is we had a 1962 PLymouth full sized wagon based on this style and it was no small car. The wagons were still as big as the competition somehow. The interiors of the Dodge and Plymouth Dashboards especially on the lower end models can be pretty plain and not much style at all. I still have a soft spot for these ‘62 Mopars. Especially this beauty you showed us today!

The 1962 Polara, was definetly Polorizing. From the Dodge Dart to the top of the line Polara they all looked the same inside and out. I use to love this styling and that’s probably because my Dads BF drove a RED 1964 Dodge Polara Conv. I use to stair at the car for hours when he and his wife came over (I was 4 years old at the time in 1966. Later I seen the 1962 models for PLymouth (my Dads next car when I turned 5 in 1967) was a Big ole 1962 Plymouth Fury wagon in rootbeer brown. I was mesmorized over the headlight design and loved the wheel covers. It looked like a Happy Car. haha. Great Find Lou!!!

Fratzog....what more can you say? Lou, thanks for finding this car and the nice owner. The 1960 - 1962 Chrysler Corp styling was unique which is why it has positive and negative reactions. The Polara 500 model was clearly trying to look "space-age" and is full of bling. The interior of the car is very attractive and as the owner said it is fun to drive. There are many good sources on the net about the design stories of the 1962 Chrysler products. One online article: "Automotive & Design History: 1962 Plymouth & Dodge - Brilliant Blunder, or Suddenly It’s 1977" is worth reading if you want to know more about the styling history (including 1962) of Chrysler Corp cars.

I bought this car brand new in 62 sans air - $3280.00. Beige with nutmeg brown accents. Best color combo for that design. Turned ugly into absolutely stunning for that year. Your car is nice example. While you where panning the dashboard area are I noticed the radio dial indicator was a straight vertical red line. I seem to remember that the radio in my car had a red ball as the station indicator. You couldn't really tell exactly what station you where tuned to. Also the steering wheel was oval in my car not round. I mention this because other examples of this car on You Tube seem to have this same discrepancy.. Not sure why this is or maybe it's my poor memory. Enjoy the car.

My great uncle bought a new 62 Dart ( same body style) sedan bare bones 225 six 3 on the tree, manual brakes, manual steering. I think the only options were an AM radio and heater.. it didn't even have windshield washers or reverse lamps. Green on green and supremely ugly IMO, it was the 1st car I learned to drive a column shifted manual on, non synchro 1st gear. To it's credit, it drove fantastic, and ran like a Swiss watch. Sadly, in 1994 it was rear ended and totaled by a truck, still 90% original and rust free.

Lou: “There’s a lot going on there”... LOL Yeah. It looks like the designers got a memo telling them they had to use up all the chrome doo-dads in the stock room, or there would be no Christmas in ‘62. Cool car, and I’m glad Mr. Dude saved it.

My DAD had a 64 DART 400, I think, maybe it was just a dodge 400. It looked similar, but a 4 door. This was previously a police pursuit vehicle, it had high performance 400 cu. in engine, sway bars, tortion bars, the speedometer went up to 140 mph, maybe higher. I was about 7 yrs old, so I may not be remembering exactly. that car was fast. I remember that this car was blue, and in good shape. My MOM made my dad sell it because he liked to drive it fast. Those cars of that vintage seemed to not have good rust prevention.

Cool car! The styling was a tad off that year with the angled lights front and back but it still neat. My uncle bought a 1965 Dodge Coronet 500. It was a great car that he kept well into the 1980's. Have you ever done a video of one of those?

Mine had a different air cleaner with two intake spouts. I eventually ran hose up to the grille so it sucks cooler air from outside. The distributor was a dual point unit which I had checked out by a guy who was a racer. He changed weights and springs in the distributor then rejetted the carburetor. I swear that added another 30 horsepower and gobs of torque. If I mashed the throttle from dead stop it would move forward about 15 or 20 feet then break the tires loose. I had to be careful turning corners where there were paint stripes or it could spin out. I sold it when I got drafted. Should have kept it.

This is a nice looking car! I would think it would have given the 300 H a run for it's money, especially if you could get the Ram induction on one of these with the 413...It has to weigh hundreds of lbs less. The only weight the Chryslers lost in 1962 was whatever the points on the tailfins from the 1961 Chrysler weighed...

Knowledgeable owner. I have a 63 Dodge Custom 880 that was the direct result of these downsized Dodges. Fascinating period of automobile industry history. Exner was unfairly the fall guy for poor sales but his full size designs of these were elegant and the awkward proportions were the result of the crash shrink program. That said these have come into their own and I’m a fan.

My dad was a big fan of big Dodges and Chryslers all through the fifties. I don't think there is much question that the big 383 + Torqueflite was the best powertrain of that era. Unfortunately, the styling is far beyond "over the top," bordering on ridiculous. When Dad brought home the '64 Dodge, my mother considered it so ugly she refused to drive it. By 1965, she had a beautiful Impala coupe. Happy wife, happy life.

The epitome of Chrysler Corp.'s famous Plucked Chicken look. After Virgil Exner retired, the cars without fins took a wrong turn. When the 1961 line up of cars was introduced to dealers in New York City, there were howls of protest. "How can we sell these things?" Some tried to get out of their dealership contracts. Much of the sales were to fleets, rentals, taxis, police and government agencies because they could be sold at big discounts for high volume.

I personally thought that the design of ‘‘tis particular year rivaled styling from some of Ghia’s designs of the period and resembled the styling of the Facel Vega from France that would use Chrysler’s engine and transmission. Chrysler’s communications breakdown resulted in a generation of full size cars sized correctly for today’s driving conditions.
