Definitely. I feel like so many people wanna be like the rockstars and live that sex, drugs, and rock and rock life. You can have however many “normal” people telling you not to do drugs but it sadly falls on a lot of deaf ears. Hearing from the mouths of the musicians themselves adds a new perspective.

"Sentencing yourself to a life of misery" nailed it. But it's impossible to see from inside it. It's like telling a young person what it's like to get old. I'd say that most of Alice in Chains' Dirt was Layne's warning to others not to go down the path he went with drugs. Junkhead was about the cynical ability to defend the addiction you are caught up in, but then so much of the rest is Layne calling for help bc he knew he was in deep. Obvious exceptions to this would be a song like Rooster(probably my #1 or #2 AIC song)

Sure, but without drugs Dirt wouldn't have been written. That's the irony of it. AIC is a good example of a band that carries on sober, but lost the spark it had somehow. Doesn't justify drug abuse, though.

@FedeMayhemile. 3 жыл бұрын
@@johnkrazzki6492 Yes, but partially, the instrumental "would" have probably been almost the same, because Cantrell was a conscious creative guy as he still is, the only probable ones that could have been different or straight up not exist maybe are Angry Chair or Hate to Feel and obviously half the lyrics of the songs, meaning, all the things that Layne himself composed for that album that made for that doom dark strightforward themes that made their sound, always remember that objectively Cantrell is the main composer with Layne being the raw honest power that composed half the "lyrics", other thing is that Mad Season would have never existed or at least not with that name hahah, Facelift would have been practically the same, so they would have been successful one way or another because whatever the case they were always good artists before the drugs became part of composers.

Valid points there man I speak from experience when I say this drugs can make you a huge hypocrite it’s like your telling others not ti do it yet your the one who’s smoking that Joint snorting that line or sticking that needle in your arm and your telling everyone else not to do it that it will mess up your life well take a good look at yourself before you preach to others. And you know Alice in chains dirt is I think the most honest grunge slash metal recurs to cone out it’s like layne knew he’d taken his drug addiction so far that he couldn’t escape from it and the album is his way of saying if I can’t help myself I might be able to help someone else.

Keith Richards mentions in his autobiography ( which is on KZbin as an audiobook), that he suspects the reason drugs didn’t kill him was because he was getting a medical grade supply. The UK had a program for addicts that supplied them the drug they were addicted to, as a harm reduction program. A lot of people would say they were addicted to two drugs. They’d use the one they were addicted to, then trade or sell the one they were fake addicted to. So he was scoring clean, highest quality stuff.

Yeah, but for a very large part of his career, he wasn’t getting his heroin from the UK government. He got his drugs on the street, he just sought out the higher quality dope. Plus he was Keith Richards and there were dealers lined up around the block in practically every city around the world that they visited. The Stones left a lot of rich dealers everywhere they went. Just remember, most heroin addicts don’t have near the kind of money and access that Keith Richards had.

My friend of 18 years deliberately drunk himself to death. He didn’t want to live anymore because he couldn’t shake his alcoholism. So he spent two months drinking multiple bottles of wine each day and refusing to eat food so his body would give up. God, I still miss him. If only he had loved himself the way we all loved him. He was greatly loved by friends and family ❤️ Alcohol and drugs, pointless and never is a happy story.

Sadly that’s what most people think before getting addicted. “I’m different, I can control myself and not get addicted”, “That’s not me” but they don’t realize that most of drug addicts had the same thoughts when they dived into them. I wish weed would be legal everywhere, I feel like that would save a lot of lives.

@@moltenSky2d it ruins as many too i love weed but as someone who has spent way too much money on it over the 15+ years i've smoked it, i spent some time one day estimating based on 1- how much i paid for it before it was medically legal in my state vs how much and how often i remember smoking 2- how much i did the same of the above when it was medically legal and the black market prices still went down due to increased supply 3- how much i did when i got a medical card and was exempt from taxes but stil paid more than street prices i've probably blown at least 30-35k on weed my entire life some people are worse than me and make less than me, addiction to anything is just bad but the things that are less abhorrent to society at large hide the true cost beneath a veil of "at least i'm not a junky"
@Sebastian-zc4qn
@Sebastian-zc4qn 3 жыл бұрын
It's escapism. At the end of the day, that's what it could really be summed up to. This month I will be 8 months sober from alcohol. I have said to people "I have drank more in 10 years than most men will drink in their entire lives." By the time I was 18, I was drinking nearly a case of beer a day. That means at most, I was consuming upwards of 400 beers a month, and at LEAST 315 beers a month in case I missed a few days. I was drinking hundreds of beers a month. I could drink 15 beers a day, every day, all month. And that's not counting all of the liquors and spirits I drank otherwise. Empty bottles of rum and whiskey filled my bedroom closet when I was 19. My family bought me alcohol until I was legally able to do it for myself, so I was already an experienced drinker years before I could actually buy it on my own. I'd say, without exaggeration, I've consumed somewhere in the ballpark of 30,000 beers since I was 15 years old. And that's on the lower end. And on top of it, hundreds of bottles of rum and whiskey and vodka. I turn 27 years old very soon, but have been drinking more than 10 years. This is the longest I've been sober in nearly a decade. When I was drinking, I would pretty often drink on an empty stomach. I had plenty of times when I would drink before I even ate breakfast. Some days I wouldn't eat AT ALL, I'd just drink and go to bed drunk with no food. I would be so buzzed I didn't even notice. It became a nightmare to maintain that kind of "lifestyle" (if you can call it that). I'd wake up at 9 am, but wouldn't roll out of bed until noon or 1 o'clock in the afternoon because my body felt so drained and tired. You've no idea just how exhausted you feel when you are doing that to yourself day in and day out. I say I "wouldn't get out of bed", but it felt more like I COULDN'T get out of bed. Even walking to the bathroom is taxing. You're sluggish all the time. You're constantly sore and feel awful. The only time you feel "normal" is when you're drinking. And that is probably because the alcohol has numbed you so that you don't feel the reality of your body being in bad shape. You can't remember anything, you have high blood pressure, you suffer CRIPPLING anxiety when you suffer withdrawals, and so much more. It is terrible. And it makes you an awful liar and can even make some of us thieves. I admit, I even stole when I was really struggling with alcohol. It's no way to live. Any of you struggling with it, I tell you to get out of that while you can. Put it down. And you don't need to tell me "But it's hard man...." I know. I just told you that I've been doing this for 10+ years. I'm well aware of probably EVERYTHING you've felt and experienced. The failing memory, the feeling ill and tired, the anxiety, the withdrawals, the broken trust and broken family, ALL OF IT. I get it. It's time to put it down. I also know that the withdrawals are often the real reason you keep going back. I've been there, and I know what you're dealing with. I've told people "You don't understand alcohol withdrawal anxiety... It's not your every day anxiety... It's MUCH worse. It's more like a sense of impending doom." I would suffer HORRIBLE anxiety. Stuff that had me pacing the floor and scratching my head so bad I was pulling out hairs. It's HORRENDOUS, I know. There is just no way to describe it to people who haven't experienced it. It's on a whole other level than your run-of-the-mill anxiety. We've all had that. But THIS?... No, this is much worse. I couldn't breathe, and almost passed out in the street once. I had to rush back home, quickly run into another room and down several gulps of booze before I could even HANDLE a 15 minute walk to the corner store to get more. My anxiety and blood pressure would get so bad that I couldn't breathe and almost passed out just WALKING. It felt like my lungs were filled halfway with sand. You CAN'T breathe to save your life (no pun intended). I'm telling you, alcohol withdrawals are a nightmare come to life. To those of you looking to stop drinking, I STRONGLY recommend picking up some Chamomile teas (organic of course). Chamomile tea contains things that help balance the chemicals in your brain to combat anxiety. I'm telling you right now, I wish I would have known about this the last time I tried getting sober. For some of you, it will make a WORLD of difference in recovery. This way you can take a natural and herbal approach to recovery instead of relying on pills and more "industrial" alternatives. It would be much better for your health. I recommend you look into it. Get sober gentleman. You need it.

@@rickc2102 Even though he's not a rockstar, Kid Cudi said the same thing about drugs, and he's had multiple occurrences with drug use from depression. Drugs act as a way to let go of inhibitions, and just do things regardless of consequence, which may come off as being creative or out of the box, but the only thing holding back their creativity was the lack of focus and initiative. It's hard to be creative or alert when all you're thinking about is the next time you'll pop a pill, smoke, shoot up, snort something, etc; some people are capable of functioning with it, but functioning is used very loosely, and it's more like they've just done it so much they know how to handle themselves, but it will still cause serious health and mental issues that they won't be able to ignore in the future.

Layne Staley warned fans about drugs his whole career, the dirt album is about the life of an addict, it starts off with how good it feels and then the realisation that your life is over and you're gonna die probably not too long from now. From godsmack depicting how good it feels to would about the death of a fellow addict friend (Andrew wood) to rain when I die talking about death. Unfortunately Layne didn't win his demons, probably the most slowest suicide and most depressing death in metal and rock.

Layne is probably the biggest eye opening case of this for me. I can hear the pain in Layne's voice very clearly in Alice in Chains. I feel so bad for Layne and what he went through in the last years of his life. I just imagine the loneliness, dependence on drugs and how shitty he must've felt. I can't imagine being his mom or those cops who discovered his body two weeks after his death. Very sad.

Hopefully these stories and others will tell folks that addiction is truly a long term recovery, and people need strong support through it. You can have all of the desire and motivation in the world to avoid drugs/alcohol/porn/any form of addiction, but there are those triggers that often lead to people returning to the substance to deal with some sort of stress/trauma/pain,etc. Notice that a good number of people in this video had some issues/relapses after said interviews. It is not a change of heart or them lying about seeking change; It is a daily battle to say your life is better without that substance.

I think it's not even that, I think it's because people who are very talented creatively and enjoy creating something are often obsessive by nature. Musicians who are able to create something great usually spend literary most of their time thinking about music, reading about it, playing it, discussing it etc etc. it's because they obsess so much with it that they are able to discover something special, after a lot of trial, error, learning, understanding. True. I think a slightly different way of looking at it is that artistic and creative types may be more prone to self esteem and mental health issues which could lead to substance use and addiction. That said, I can also vouch for the creative potential of substance use. However, being loaded all the time is NOT a good way to stay productive and creative. It does seem to have a short term boost to creativity when used sparingly. I think the key there is the novelty of the states produced by various substances. Once it no longer becomes novel, it can really detract from your art or lead to illness or death.

@@travisnorman Thanks bro. The area I'm living in is in lock down, and I guess I can say I've been using it to my advantage. I've been using it as my way to distance myself from someone I used to drink with every weekend. I'd go by every 2 or 3 weeks, but I'd stay sober all that time I didn't go out. Unfortunately for him, he would go down to his neighbors and get drunk with that guy (along with others, when people are supposed to be staying away from each other), or if I was at his place, he would invite people in to get fucked up, which would make me get up and leave. I want to stay sober and if it means severing my friendship with my one buddy, then that's whats going to have to happen. I'm finding ways to keep myself sober when I stay home, like working out (even with a lack of equipment), reading my Marvel or DC novels outside in the sweltering heat, or whatever else to keep me in line. Maybe I'll even consider picking back up my guitars again, even though I'm not good. Its better than opening up a can after just going through a case the previous night while having a hangover. I've had enough of living like that every weekend.

One thing I think causes addictions in touring artists especially is when it's the same process over and over again, by that I mean the repetitive process of performing and travelling, they need that excess substance to 'keep it fun' (discussed in the Foo Fighters Back And Forth documentary)

got off methadone 2 years ago after 14 years of heroin addiction. recently relapsed after a bad break up. i have autism and bpd so its difficult. but the point is: youre never a recovered addict. you are a recovering addict for life. because it can take even the most trivial thing to throw all you worked towards down the drain. much love to all my fellow addicts trying to right the wrongs they made. keep your heads held higher than you might be right now. the catch 22 is other addicts are there for you because no one else is. but that's the problem; the culture is there for you.

I was so pissed when I heard Phil was clinically deceased for a few minutes. It really hurt me man, not trying to spin a sob story because I had a good childhood and upbringing, but fact of the matter was Vulgar Display of Power was the closest thing I had to a father figure growing up and Phil's messages of strength and "unscarred by trials" helped me in so many countless ways I couldn't begin to put it into words. I was so angry and afraid that I'd be completely lost without his message. Never in my wildest dreams could I have imagine both Vinnie and Dime's lives would be cut so incredibly short as well. I cried my eyes out when I heard about that fateful day in Columbus OH. Dimebag has been my guitar idol and hero since the early 90's but I am blessed with the fact I was able to meet them on the TGSTK tour and got Vinnie's and Dime's autographs. All the stories about Dime was true too man... it was me and two other friends and he legit hung out with us for easily 20 minutes. We were 15 years old and he wasn't trying to leave to go find a groupie, he wasn't trying to shoo the little kids away... he was through and through legit and those memories have stuck with me to this day. RIP Abbott Brothers, you changed the face of music and your legacy will continue on.

I am a addict so I agree with this but my question is why were drugs put on this earth and why do our bodies accept them? There are receptors in our body that take these drugs in meaning our bodies are designed to take these substances. It’s strange to think about. With the ease of addiction you would think our bodies would become almost allergic to drugs but it’s not happening.

Many people are addicted to things containing sugar, but it doesn't mean we were designed to take massive quantities of it and it can trigger cancer. The desire came about to get us to search for fruit, which didn't harm us and we could only get in small amounts. Many drugs are like Trojan horses. They have a sneaky way of getting themselves to feel needed once they get inside the body.

@@_RobBanks Abuse isn't some black and white concept, it cant just be put into a little box, there are many forms of substance abuse, your comment seems to come from a place of ignorance and possibly even arrogance. LSD and other psychedelics can very easily be abused, I've seen it happen to multiple friends who used psychedelics every 2nd day for months at a time until they were on the brink of insanity, it even happened to me for 2-3 months when I was younger. You can become addicted to sugar for Christ's sake, what makes you think substances as potent and often euphoric as psychedelics would be impossible to abuse?

This idea of ‘throwing an addict out of the house’ to help them recover has the highest percentage of death rates. Philip Seymour Hoffman died shortly after he was kicked out of his house and analysis they have done of tough love on addicts suggest it does more harm than good. The addict gets kicked out of the house, feels ashamed, does more drugs and overdoses. Its the worst advice ever. They need support like anyone else with a disease.

you're not wrong to an extent but i've seen alot of people fry their brains from using acid way too many times at way too high of doses i've seen people who get addicted to the feeling of tripping and find really shitty pseudo-psychedelic ways to get high like cough syrup psychedlics can help but honestly there's nothing that is ever in this world inherently bad, people forget heroin was used to lessen the pain of wounded soldiers, amphetamines were used to treat fatigue for airplane pilots, cocaine traditionally was chewed in leaf form and a relatively mild stimulant, coffee when it was brought from the new world in the 1500s back to europe is credited by some for the rennaisance period when people began to drink coffee instead of alcohol for the first time in forever (because apparently people were still too dumb to figure out the reason why beer and coffee didnt give you dysentery but river water did was because you have to basically boil it first to have beer or coffee, like this is one piece of history i have a hard time believing, if people figured out how to make alcohol how did clean water not really become a thing until modern plumbing, it just makes no sense) anyways my point is people are too quick to defend psychedelics like they can't be abused because they're non-addictive. that kind of dismisses the mind of an addict in the first place people cant stop drinking soda and eating cheesegburgers to death, the show hoarders shows what addiction to stuff looks like, it can be anything but i can stop any time i want to you dont know me
