I remember seeing an interview of Chester from Linkin Park talking about screaming. @@Chiara-zm3sw ohh why is that if you don't mind me asking? that's very interesting
@Chiara-zm3sw Жыл бұрын
@@onedirectioninfection5756 oh I’m happy if people ask :) even though she said she’d drink only one shot of alcohol, alcohol dries out the tissue surrounding the vocal chords making them more prone to strain. Same goes for the cough drops and the spray; usually cough drops contain menthol which can cause dryness up to irritation of the larynx structures (voice box), same goes for coffee. I don’t know the spray she’s using so I can’t really judge that but I’ve seen people with voice problems use similar sprays because they contain lidocaine or similar numbing fluids which make it feel like the pain or the sore throat that was caused by irritation is gone but usually it’s only hiding the symptoms and causing more strain to the vocal cords. Generally speaking the singing styles used for metal music are, done wrong, very harmful to the voice and it’s hard to tell when singers do it right so I would not be surprised if many metal but also other singers in general have voice problems they don’t really talk about
@onedirectioninfection5756 Жыл бұрын
@@Chiara-zm3sw that's so interesting! it's hilarious how people swear by the cures that are actually making everything worse. theres unfortunately a lot of stories of metal artists hurting their voices for good when they just didn't know better, namely oli sykes of BMTH. i've seen them in concert a few times and you can tell he can't sing as much as he used to since he got surgery in 2019. ronnie radke of FiR has also been canceling a lot of shows these past few years due to vocal strain. it's very sad to see when there's a proper way to scream
@Chiara-zm3sw Жыл бұрын
@@onedirectioninfection5756 unfortunately I believe that there is no good way to scream. Medically seen any use of the false vocal chords implies major stress to the actual vocal chords. Plus it intensifies wrong vocal use… so the only sustainable way for metal vocal styles is to find good balance. But I’m really sad about it too cuz I love metal

Not saying it doesn't happen, but 98% of the concerts I've been to have been a complete contrast to the ones you all are describing. Why would a guy, drunk or not, want to invite a potential incident, risk a fight with someone's boyfriend, risk pit justice, risk arrest and sex offender charge in public in front of hundreds of witnesses? @@nehpetsamenied9068 idk if you are personally a female, and also in my many years and few hundred concerts later, trust me it happens more often than you see. Not every venue has top tier security, not every woman (personally me), don’t go to shows with a bf or male in general as I’ve often gone alone, not every person in the crowd cares, and yes there have been times thankfully that other men became aware and served as a shield or they threatened the person or took care of them but that’s isn’t always the case. Also it happens a lot during sets where everyone is a tad more compacted, they think because everyone is close they can just cop a feel or rub their little boners up on you. And yes I’ve had my fair share of personally serving a few elbows to someone’s face or pushing them in a pit. I’m in the east coast mostly. But you’d be surprised at how often it actually happens in a male dominated space. Also I’d like to clarify it isn’t always drunk guys. There have been plenty of sober ones do it too. Good on your venues though.

Hell yes it was... Both my wife and I were in bands before our kids were born, I'm talking mid-to-late 90's / early 2000s death metal / hardcore and early metalcore bands. My wife sang in a NY-style 90's hardcore band (think Life of Agony). She has smashed more than one dude in the face with a microphone for grabbing at her inappropriately, she's jumped off stage with a flying dropkick in combat boots into a dude's face after watching him grab a girl's crotch and breast while she was crowdsurfing. The scene back then was brutal for women, especially in the genre's that were still entirely male dominated, while girls were breaking into metal in the late 90' (like Karyn Crisis), Hardcore and death metal were still dangerous scenes for the ladies, lot of nasty stuff happened to girls who went to those shows. I'm so glad that things have changed as much as they have, I wouldn't be nearly as terrified if one of my daughters came and told me they were going on tour fronting a metal band today as I would have been 15-20 years ago. Anyway, Courtney reminds me a lot of my wife when she was younger.

@@zakcritch8706 tons of vocalists cup live. Some vocalists even cup when singing without a mic to get that tone. Just because Glenn doesn't like the sound of cupping doesn't mean its objectively bad tone
@elirhoades94184 жыл бұрын
@@zakcritch8706 Glen is a producer, a bass player, and most importantly not a vocalist and definitely not a touring vocalist so, from experience, I can say cupping the mic can be very helpful. When everyone is cranked up super loud you don't need to worry about having a perfectly clear tone, you just need to be loud and aggressive.
@Filip_K_Shapethesound4 жыл бұрын
@@zakcritch8706 Tbh, I really like Glenn, but I wouldn' take his word that something is always black or white - best example is his "no sample" policy, which is plain crazy. I've seen the video about cupping and I understand what he means, however I've heard some vocalists live who were cupping the mic and they sounded sick. She explained it really well why she's cupping the mic and it really makes perfect sense. Btw, there are videos of Spiritbox live and she sounds amazing :)

Spiritbox needs to come out with a song called "middle school mosh pit" and have the lyrics be all about how bullies suck, cafeteria food is gross, and the scholastic book fair is the coolest shit ever. Make a video of playing a middle school graduation ceremony and have a bunch of kids moshing. Make it go viral on tik tok and BOOM, you got an entirely new generation into metal to keep the fanbase alive. Rock revival. You're welcome.

It’s time we start comparing both male and female vocalists in rock and metal under just one list. So many vocalists out there, both male and female, that are incredibly talented singers, screamers, and songwriters and it’s time we start recognizing all of them together as one. Courtney, you’re an inspiration to not just women who want to become a vocalist but also men as well! We love you, girl! You kick ass! And so does Mike, Zev, and Josh 🙏🏻
