I’m just so glad to know that even the pros can have “those days”. I cuss a LOT. I don’t sew around the granddaughters cause my room is rated R for language. Thanks for being human! I’ve learned to use a stapler in those corners (the corners without the zipper), and I unzip the zipper. I also use a skinny foot. I had a terrible time with my first Mav pack. I really messed up the zipper badly, and tossed the bag in my scrap bin, only saving the hardware. I also don’t attempt to topstitch the front anymore and it looks perfectly fine.

You sounded so fed up 😢 my only suggestion would be to have the zipper open when you sew that panel on so it’s not as tight around the curves. I know some people will snip the zipper tape but it scares the life out of me 😂 so I usually keep the zipper open. I’ll also use staples from time to time, but I haven’t made this pattern so can’t say if that would help much. But I’d also like to say thank you for posting this video, troubles and all, as it shows others that even the best of bag makers have struggles. Keeping it real as always ❤
@jos95698 ай бұрын
I feel all of that. Thank you for showing the good, bad, ugly, and reality of making curved gussets. No matter how many you make of them, you never know when it's just gonna fight you. I've struggled with the Catalina bag for the same reasons, it seems like having a zipper without a placket is askin' for trouble 🙃

I tend to avoid the patterns that attach the zipper directly to the front panel, or really any bag that has a lot of curves. They’re my nemesis!

I find that opening the zipper all the way makes it so much easier to sew! I also find it helpful to baste at 1/8” first and then go back around and sew at the correct seam allowance!
@SewGnar8 ай бұрын
I’ll have to try that on the next one!
@pamsfiberfrenzy8 ай бұрын
Also, I did hear you say that you sewed with a 1/4” instead of a 3/8”. I use the 3/8” on this pattern and around the zipper it’s slightly less than 3/8” but I sew it as close to the zipper as my zipper foot will allow and it seems to work perfectly every time!
@valeriegray39679 ай бұрын
I too love this pattern and bought the templates to make more.I believe the crook that the flange make with the zipper causes the problem. I have made another pattern that Sew’s directly to the zipper and created a mini gusset for that side to give me fabric to snip in the corners but havent done it with this pattern. Great sew and it looks great.

I don’t have the experience you do, but I’m not a fan of the zipper on the seam. I’ve seen too many zippers shred from the stress. I usually make a gusset piece for it. In the bags I have trouble with the corners wanting to move, I’ll put 1 staple in each corner to keep it from moving. I haven’t tried the Louie yet, it’s super cute.

I want to try making this bag with a full middle zipper gusset, I’m wondering if it’ll change the look of the front though. Only one way to find out!

@@SewGnar I did it on the Mav by Linds Handmade and on the Hydro pouch by Sweet Adeline Stitches and I think the shape is better. But that’s just my opinion.
@hazelthorne83979 ай бұрын
Well done for persevering..I think on bags like this getting the seam allowances spot on is essential otherwise it just doesn’t fit. I’m not a fan of zippers on the gussets personally.. You could try basting it on with 1/8” first then going round again….will be a little easier and staple the bottom curves. It’s quite tight corners so never the easiest. Well done Nicole…i would have had a tantrum , thrown it and stomped off lol
@SewGnar9 ай бұрын
Haha I almost threw it away but I’m glad I got there in the end. My little sister LOVES it and didn’t notice any of the issues I had with it, so I’ll call that a win!
@janicekirkwelfare72159 ай бұрын
I have done this pattern many times and always seem to have one problem or another. Especially adding the front to the zipper. . I have been known to add about a 1” piece of exterior fabric and lining along that zipper edge to essentially make the zipper tape a bit wider and “clipable”. I’ve also put the gusset on backwards (but it still looks good). I do love the pattern though. Looks great in cork!

I get frustrated with curves and gussets, but I’ve found that when I stopped sewing gusset up I get better results. So when the panel is tucked into the gusset I sew it gusset down and keep the panel tucked and it is much easier for me. I don’t know if that made sense.
