Louis Bleriot Crosses the English Channel in 1909

At 33 years old, Louie Blériot started experimenting with multiple aircraft designs. Many of them failed to leave the ground, but within four years of hard work, his Blériot XI monoplane started showing signs of success. The Type XI was initially powered by a REP engine but it was overheating, leading Blériot to get in touch with Alessandro Anzani, who had developed a successful motorcycle engine and had subsequently entered the aero-engine market. Importantly, Anzani was associated with Lucien Chauvière, who had designed a sophisticated laminated walnut propeller. The combination of a reliable engine and an efficient propeller would contribute greatly to the success of the Type XI. In July of 1909, the race was on to be the first person to fly an airplane across the English Channel. Louie Blériot was head-to-head against fellow French Aviator Hubert Latham to make a mark in history and earn a £1000 prize in doing so. The newspapers build suspense with the question, "Who will dare to fly first? The dashing Latham, or the dogged Blériot?"

Wilbur Wright in his model A flyer was far superior to the Bleriot type XI, but Wilbur dismissed the flight as a stunt. All of which makes Louie Bleriot a very daring young man in a marginal flying machine. Fun video.

I got the Bleriot on MSFS and have enjoyed reading its history. Your video on it is just so perfectly done. Bravo! I’ve enjoyed doing the same crossing to Dover but it looks like you were more accurate in picking a landing spot than I was. I might have to try again.
