I would argue that Dane Cook was the first comedian to use an email list to build a network for his fans. He was using AOL chat messenger and MySpace to promote and build us his fan network. Well over a decade before Louis CK did this. Problem seems he abandoned it all once he got his big break out into the mainstream and relied on traditional media sources to keep himself out there. So in a way he did it backwards.

Yep. Dane would do a lot of promotion on foot at colleges and before/after shows but he made it a point of getting contact details from anybody interested. He stayed in touch with his fanbase directly and very frequently through myspace and email taking the time to speak to fans without having to go through middlemen. He has been able to hold on to a pretty tight and loyal fan base through that approach as opposed to letting prod companies and studios market him

Louie was genius with pulling the live stream down after 10 days and releasing a polished special of the same material. Rock's live special was and still is ROUGH. He messed up his final punchline and had no way to fix that. And overall it was just clunky and hard to watch through a screen whereas in person it was probably much easier to digest. Rogan's was produced a little better and flowed a little smoother even though the material was disappointing but still. I'm not even gonna touch Katt's lmao. Live comedy just does not translate the same way through a screen without a little post-production help.
