How to make beautiful "Louis Cubes", aka "Tumbling Blocks", in solid wood, not veneer. Included is how to make a table saw jig, cut the pieces, assemble, and finish. The result is a flat surface that looks three dimensional. It takes some care and patience, but artistic ability is not required.

I’ve been watching these cutting board videos for about 4 years now because that’s how long ago I began making cutting boards. Yours is the best one that has ever explained exactly how to build this board. My only concern is the glue and being food safe. Thanks

Great video! Just a hint to help with the sawdust control, cut a small chamfer on the bottom of the guide and stop block to give the sawdust somewhere to go. I also see how this jig can be easily be adjusted to be more comfortable for us left handed woodworkers. Thanks for the suggestion for the hold down. I’m looking forward to making this jig and making my first 3D cutting board.😊

I am currently building three tumbling block cutting boards and I was concerned about the poor fit of some of the blocks. All of the videos covering the build of this type cutting board ignore the importance of dead accurate dimensions, except yours. Thank you for posting this video! I built the jig and I am elated how accurate the cuts are. The pieces fit together very near perfect. I love the jig and I will be making many more tumbling block cutting boards in the future.

Thanks, Calvin, that's wonderful to read. I've been helped by so many woodworking videos that I love being able to contribute, however modestly, to the conversation.

Great job! I have been watching videos on how to make one of these cutting boards and have noted all of the accuracy issues that you dealt with. I could see a disappointing result in my future so I have just avoided starting. Your video resolved all of my concerns and I'll be starting this weekend. Thank you!

Fabulous video! Thank you for sharing your mistakes- makes me feel less inadequate to know others make them too! My question: How is the glue holding up? I’ve been worried to use a quick glue for fear it won’t hold up to water and stress and soap and normal kitchen wear and tear compared to Titebond III? Thanks again for an excellent production!

I wish I had a good answer on that. I made a half-dozen of these and gave them to siblings and neighbors as Christmas presents. As far as I know, none of them have actually used them as cutting boards; they've been either used purely as decorations or as serving trays, so they haven't had a lot of water or stress. I do know that the finish I used benefits from being refreshed every year or so if it's kept in a dry environment.

Thanks. By the say, the only reason I'm not "The Grumpy Old Woodworker" is that the name was taken.

Just a couple of observations in all these videos I watch people seem to have an abundance of plywood, walnut , maple ,oak, and various other hardwoods , and then they also seem to have every tool that I do not! I found my table saw on the side of the road and have made various attachments for it , so here you are and it looks like I will be building what you have. Hmmn all those pieces and next I will need to make clamps too.

how do you determine what the depth stop should be set at so all sides are equall length?
@JustThisGuyUNo
@JustThisGuyUNo 3 жыл бұрын
The depth stop determines the size of the pieces. You can set it anywhere you want, and as long as you don't then move it all your pieces will be the same size. Each piece will also have equal-length sides. That's because you're running each piece through twice. Each pass determines the length of two sides, so two passes make all four sides the same.

How thick was your cutting board stock? Did I miss that
@JustThisGuyUNo
@JustThisGuyUNo 3 жыл бұрын
Speaking of missing things, for some reason I seem to have missed the notification of your question. I apologize for the extremely late reply. It was 3/4" thick stock, though neither the jig nor the procedures require that. The thicker the stock, the more careful you'd want to be that your table saw blade is at exactly 90 degrees from the jig surface.

Suggestion, if you're going to narrate, u should put your crib page you're reading from, right next to the camera, so it isn't obvious you're going off a pre written page
@mim2046
@mim2046 Жыл бұрын
Your jig is so inefficient. You should devise a jig that allows u to flip snap the hold down vs a screw down. That seems like it would take for ever and a year
