Spohr is an underrated composer. He had a long carreer, but from a stylistic point of view he can be linked rather to Beethoven and Schubert than to the following Romantic generation. Here, we have and excellent symphony. From the beginning, we can have the feeling that the writing is very firm, based on themes with contrapunctal abilities. The harmonic progression as also very firm. This gives to the symphony a "motto" of its own, which deserves an interest compared to the motto af works of Beethoven and Schubert. This contrapuctal form is natural, since this is an "historical" symphony and this movement evokes Bach & Haendel, but the fact is that the composer was able to write something very strict and in the same time typical of the first Romantic period. The other movements have also mottos of their own. Spohr has less power than Beethoven and Schubert, but the message is that he sould not be neglected and brought something of his own to the first generation of romantic composers.

Love when composers exercise their craft by writing in earlier, historical styles, like this Symphony, which "goes back to a style" roughly 100 years before Spohr's time (for movement I). To the extent that Spohr, here, wrote music that could "have been written" by composers living in the historical periods he set out to imitate, this work is a "period composition," a piece "in the style of', and not a neoclassical work. Either way, it is a fine symphony !!!!

Yes, I am aware related styles may have co-existed within particular "historical periods," say Galante. Within any such historical period, some composers wrote in a relatively conservative manner while others were more daring or "progressive" (e.g. with dissonances). After analyzing the score, one MAY realize Spohr imitated a set of styles instead of one. However, this style or these styles still occur within a historical period defined by a time range (e.g. 1720 - 1780s). Historians use these terms flexibly and also use words such as "roughly" .... These "umbrella" terms just try to capture complex artistic processes in motion ....
