But like, back during the Salem Witch times or something, y'know back when burning people to death over stupid/mostly personal shit was normal, they would cheer on the burnings, and make jokes with everybody about whoever they burning for whatever reason, and drink or whatever they did back then, y'know, then they would go back behind closed doors and still be gay, and have gay sex with other gays, right? [Okay now, I really need you all to understand that this is a *joke* for this next part.] Now, let's say that his gay ancestor's, gay lover was discovered as being gay, and they wanted to burn them in front of everyone, like they normally do, then his gay ancestor would probably be like: "Oh no. I don't want to be burned at the stake out there." Right? His gay ancestor would then be out there while they were burning their gay lover, doing their normal routine, and saying stuff like: "Hey look at that faggot up there! What a faggot!" and other people in their immediate vicinity were probably chortling and shit like: "Ohohohoho I get it now. At first I didn't get it but, you're saying that ol' Giles is all tied up and burning on top of those faggots, so he's a faggot, right?" and all kinds of shit [maybe they even invented the use of the word, who really knows?] and they hit it off with everyone, they're gaining more notoriety/popularity with those around them. Plus, it wasn't even the first time that's happened to them either...there were others that they were involved with romantically that in some way or another got caught and then subsequently burned at the stake.

That was a great way to finish the scene. It escalated to that point, which was an alternative to getting hit in the face but instead went that way, which is a clever mix of a sign of love but the undertone was vengeful and spiteful, but ultimately playful. This scene was really good!

Most honest scene in television in a long time. Nick D's point of view against a gay person but at the end of the day they are all still friends because of who they are as people, not because of who they fuck. If I'm grossed out by gay sex (two men, lesbians are a different story) then I should be able to express myself without being crucified, as long as I'm not crucifying anyone else with my words.

I love this scene so much. I think it’s oddly heartwarming how interested Louie is in learning about his friend’s lifestyle. Despite all of Louie’s normal cynicism and jadedness, he’s able to somehow be the most earnest while asking questions about the other dude’s gay activities. Meanwhile everyone else is either disgusted or couldn’t give a shit. And it also raises a poignant awareness to how hurtful the f word can be, without downright shaming Louie and the others for ever using it. Just makes you think.

I love this scene so much. When you have a group of friends that are really close and truly care about each other you can have conversations that would be appalling to any outside observer. But within that group there is a trust and an understanding that doesn't exist with strangers. Really helps dramatize the story. You can tell some of the lines are clearly scripted. But the script and story is good enough it doesnt matter. It's a great scene, but people should know that the etymology given here about the origin of the word "faggot" is basically an urban myth. It's effective in the scene, but it is unlikely that it is a reference to throwing gay people on a pyre, because that is not how they were punished. The most likely explanation is that it comes from a usage which is attested in the 17th century, namely that it was a word used for a woman, and most pejorative terms for gays, in English as well as in many other languages, are terms that imply that a gay man is essentially female: queen, sissy, Mary, etc.

Driss Ler I find him depressing as he gets older. He's become more of nagging old man, feel like he's always coming from "i'm high and mighty cuz i Dont' give a damn" sort of attitude, just no connection there. BUT CK is more of a i'm one of you miserable people kinda fella, that's why he's more funny.

Enkhee B Well to each one his kind of humor, I personally loved Carlin's late shows, as he went from being a "classic" humourist to creating a very unique style of humor, where he criticizes the established society in his own way (i'm pretty sure he inspired a lot of humorists). The "nagging old man" thing is nothing but a character, as is Ck's "miserable guy", to each one his style, though i think Carlin is a legend, and i believe Ck will be, just not yet.

Driss Ler Hey you might be right. I'll try to see the nagging old man as a character and try to enjoy one of Carlin's standups. Maybe it'll be different, any recommendations? But truth be told I love CK's miserable guy and I really do think deep bottom he is the character.

This is the very best scene ever done for TV about Gay people (on a fictional program). Nothing on a "Gay TV channel" or any show starring Gay characters has ever been this brilliant. I write again because it looks like the last primary comment posted here was intended to goad people into criticizing him, so he could insult the critics in return. (And a couple dozen commenters got taken in.) Totally not in the spirit of this video. Obviously. NSBTW, The OED is the most complete source of etymologies in the English language, but even the OED is imperfect. It's not so great when it comes to polari and other words that come to the language by way of slang usage. Plenty of documentation exists which confirms how the word "faggot" came to be associated in people's minds with gay people, even if it wasn't an official definition; also, the story told in the video is _not_ an etymology: It's a story that has resonance with the truth. It was never intended as an academic treatise, neither does it distort the truth.
