What I realized is the difference between the average comedian and a true comedian was that line. 25 years of Louis CK, a good comedian, having this story about a failing average comedian with the "sitting on a cock cuz im gay" bit and he didn't come up with a punchline for it. In 2 seconds, Chris Rock comes up with the punchline for the bit.

It's worth pointing out that Gervais was producer on this show, and was functioning as a sort of host. It wasn't intended to be "4 Equal Comedians," it was presented more as "Gervais loves these guys and wants to do this thing with them."
@KenJones4201710 жыл бұрын
Adam Harrison yep. I'm not a fan of his whole appearance here. It's just important that people remember it's not just "four comedians," it's "3 comedians and the comedian who's hosting the show"

@KenJones4201710 жыл бұрын
Fistfulof Groovy Yes, the Gervais/Pilkinton stuff is great
@TurdFerguson710 жыл бұрын
Adam Harrison It's just his personality. I don't think he's trying to "justify his place in the circle" I just think the others are more laid-back in their demeanour/approach. Some people ask "Why?" a lot, and are genuinely inquisitive people that cannot dismiss points easily (hence he's an atheist). Gervais is more of a debater as the others like to move from point-to-point. I may be wrong but it seems like you don't know Gervais well enough, and are just an American christening a British comedian based on a 50 minute show. Watch Seinfeld and Gervais on - 'Comedians In Cars Getting Coffee' - it may change your mind.
@Firman190510 жыл бұрын
Heisenberg Why did you feel the need to mention that Gervais is an atheist? Also you have to remember Ricky is the 'youngest' stand up there, he started much later in and has achieved a hell of a lot. In addition to writing the office/extras etc

This is fascinating. Besides the obvious, also just the little social dilemmas that come up. Like Louis wasn't having a conversation with everyone, he was pitching to Jerry. His eye contact rarely left Jerry, and every opinion he had he looked at Jerry for approval. But also Jerry and Ricky had a slightly antagonistic relationship. Ricky not being afraid to disagree with everyone, and Jerry disliking his crassness. The "That was very funny Ricky.." sarcastic jab. Amazing.

Agreed Jerry Seinfeld is from a different time. He's looking at the older guys who literally came up with 30 minutes of material and did it again and again for 20 years. In my mind the best comedians are truly artists. And like musicians they have to have a body of work. Doesn't have to be a new hour every year, but you have to have a discography, at least some different sets/specials/jokes as you move on. If you only have 30 minutes well then you are the same as a one hit wonder in the music world. We enjoyed that bit, but now you're done.
@nickpagano71347 жыл бұрын
wes... are you joking?? no comedians keep the same material for that long anymore. that's ridiculous.
@bretanwode7 жыл бұрын
I agree with you, and yet, you have a very new attitude with regard to comedy. Usually the new is peppered in with the old. This only really changed industry wide in 2005.
@mjh87537 жыл бұрын
I think it's harder to get started as a comedian and last today. You don't get as much of a chance to develop your craft while you suck because of, you guessed, KZbin and video sharing. If a young comedian has a bit that is gaining traction and "goes viral" it'll be on the internet at some point during his trips up and down the road. Then there could be a buzz around a comedian that isn't ready for mainstream popularity. It kind of happened to Dane Cook when his career took off before he was good enough as a comic to handle it.

Critical Nobody and the people who are offended seem so ignorant to how Rock and CK have attacked the n-word in their bits. If you saw Bring The Pain, you know EXACTLY what CK is referring to when he says “nigger” in this show. CK is practically quoting the bit in reference to what Rock is saying about him. If you saw Chewed Up, you know EXACTLY why CK would say “nigger” instead of “n-word”. While it’s unfair to expect everyone to be familiar with every aspect of all four careers involved, there’s a context for everything that’s going on. It’s a manufactured controversy.

That may have something to do with the way television and radio works in Britain. The BBC controls everything and if they don't like something, you're a virtual pariah when it comes to broadcasting anything outside of the internet. They are all about perfect production & organization and have pretty strict rules about how things should work. I think Ricky's apprehension over how he's being presented on telly has a lot to do with that sort've "indoctrination" from the BBC.

I think Louis is the best of the four - actually, one of the two greatest figures in comedy history in my opinion- but I will say that I don't think he's worlds better than Ricky Gervais, or especially Chris Rock. I have big respect for Jerry Seinfeld, and think he was perfect for this interview for his prestige and overall knowledge/experience with comedy. He also contributes a lot here, and I think he was a great invite and a near-perfect fit. But in terms of actual direct comedic impact, I think he lags behind his 3 companions. My opinion and taste, of course. I just have to stress that I do think he was a good choice to be here, regardless, and I think he's a way above-average comedic talent. The "problem" is that in today's world, with the Internet, where we can watch what we want, when we want, a "really good" guy like Seinfeld is stacking up against the best ever; he doesn't deserve the scorn heaped on his head by the spoiled masses, but I do understand WHY they say he isn't in the league of the other 3. But even I have to admit if you could have substituted out Dave Chappelle for Seinfeld? Godlike magic would surely have come about. If Ricky Gervais hosts another of these, I pray that Dave is invited and accepts. Ricky, Dave, Louis, Chris Rock. Hell yeah. Big time. In my opinion, the Greatest Comedy Figure Ever is a competition between Louis CK and Dave Chappelle. Louis's just been so much more prolific at a high level that he's pulling away, he's just producing so much at a relatively rapid clip, and showing no signs of slowing. But if Dave were to do another standup special, or SOMETHING... he's just a god, just so quiet lately on the stage in terms of readily-available new material disseminated to the far-flung public. I feel in my heart that Dave Chappelle has it in him to stomp his foot down and prove that he's the greatest ever. And with his family and desire for personal peace, I don't blame him at all for pulling back. He needs to do what is best for himself and his family, that comes far, far above what any comedy fans like myself or anybody else wants/feels. But as a worshipful fan of comedy, I just dream of him coming out with another HBO special or something. If I were forced to name the 5 greatest standup routines of all time, he'd have 2 of them, just himself. Talking Funny 2, if it's made, I hope they beg Dave Chappelle on.

IgnatzKolisch SEINFELD is just "really good"!!! are u f'ing kidding me!!! he the best observational comic ever!!! he observes day to day stuff and finds comedy in them, rather than splurting out fart jokes and racist jokes...he has never used the N word, only used the f word once or twice in his career spanning more than 2 decades.
