The greatest American movie star that Americans have never heard of, because she did her most memorable work overseas and Hollywood did not appreciate her talent, or know what to do with her.

"A careless pleasure seeker". She wasn't afraid to love them and leave them, for her own happiness was the most important to her. She is my idol

At least you have that attitude while living poor in a roadside hotel.

What a vivacious personality. Amazing that she survived her alcoholism with so many memories intact. Such a raconteur with such great energy. Most of all so refreshingly honest and self depricating

Why didn't she find herself beautiful? I think she is the most beautiful woman I've ever seen.

After watching her films and reading a biography on her by Barry Paris as well as Lulu in Hollywood written by her, I think Louise chose a very different path for herself. I think she paid dearly for her mistakes, but probably had few regrets. She didn't want to be a movie star. She was a dancer. That was her first love, she fell into movies by accident. She wasn't interested in playing by the rules. I think her life in the end was a result of many decisions she had made years ago. Her career was so brief as to be a blip on the radar by Hollywood standards but she left her mark and her beauty and style is timeless.

Was she ever diagnosed with any form of mental illness? A lot of her falls seem to be directly due to self-sabotage, even her dance career. There is no doubt that she chose to not play the Hollywood game, but a big part of her actions seem erratic and seem to be something more. I think her upbringing definitely caused her to keep people at arms length and definitely kept her from loving people. Those of us that grew up with trauma know that all as defense mechanisms.

So many of these tough stories. Vera Ellen. Veronica Lake. Ruth Etting. etc. Couple of wrong moves and it's over and spiraling down.
