Mary Louise Brooks (November 14, 1906 August 8, 1985), generally known by her stage name Louise Brooks, was an American dancer, model, showgirl and silent film actress, famous for pioneering the bobbed haircut. Brooks is best known for her three feature roles including two G. W. Pabst films: in Pandora's Box (1929), Diary of a Lost Girl (1929), and Prix de Beauté (Miss Europe) (1930). She starred in 17 silent films and, late in life, authored a memoir, Lulu in Hollywood.
She made an appearance as a featured dancer in the 1925edition of the Ziegfeld Follies on Broadway, also having an affiar with Charlie Chaplin that Summer.
French film historians rediscovered her films in the early 1950s, proclaiming her as an actress who surpassed even Marlene Dietrich and Greta Garbo as a film icon (Henri Langlois: "There is no Garbo, there is no Dietrich, there is only Louise Brooks!"), much to her amusement.
Brooks had retired from the screen that same year after completing one last film, the John Wayne western Overland Stage Raiders in which she played the romantic lead with a long hairstyle that rendered her all but unrecognizable from her "Lulu" days. She then briefly returned to Wichita, where she was raised. "But that turned out to be another kind of hell," she said. "The citizens of Wichita either resented me having been a success or despised me for being a failure. And I wasn't exactly enchanted with them. I must confess to a lifelong curse: My own failure as a social creature." After an unsuccessful attempt at operating a dance studio, she returned East and, after brief stints as a radio actor and a gossip columnist, worked as a salesgirl in a Saks Fifth Avenue store in New York City for a few years, then eked out a living as a courtesan with a few select wealthy men as clients. Brooks had been a heavy drinker since age and was an alcoholic for a major portion of her life and some biographers have suggested that she turned to prostitution.
On August 8, 1985, Louise Brooks was found dead of a massive heart attack. She was buried in Sepulchre Cemetery in Rochester, New York.

Perfect face, perfect figure, with an ineffable quality of mystery and intrigue. A universe in her face. A modern Helen of Troy. If only her life had been happier.

Beautifully done ! There is something about her that caught my eye years ago. A presence you can almost feel through her pictures. I know there were bigger stars, but for me she is the epitome of mystery and beauty.

There is something about her that is just so compelling. Aside from her beauty she has a look that is just magnetic in its draw and very modern in appearance. My heart will always belong to Myrna Loy, Lillian Gish, and Louise Brooks.

I agree, too. Louise was ahead of her time, fiercely independent and could've been an even bigger star if she desired it. She wasn't so keen on Hollywood. She was such an exquisite, yet earthy beauty. The epitome of 'sexy'. 😍😎

Very nicely done - and I agree with the other posters about the music. I have more books on Louise Brooks than any other artist except for Richard Wagner, which says something about the level I holder her in. She's a tragic (for us as well as for her) example of a person whose brilliance and related temperament didn't fit in with the established structures she found herself in. Thank God for Pabst or she would have never received the belated recognition of her gifts (and the exposure of new ones) and would have ultimately gone down the dustbin of cultural history. I am grateful to Barry Parish for his biography which brought a whole new level of appreciation of her to me, and to Kevin Brownlow, the greatest historian of silent film, who brought her to my attention in the early 1970's (he dug her too). Oh, yeah, she's beautiful to look at, too.

Black and white images can be very powerful - if the lighting is right. This shows that you don't have to have a large bust-line to be sexy and attractive. Too bad so many young women of today don't understand this. It's a matter of class, grace and intelligence - not large bust and crudeness. Beautifully done video.

You did a beautiful job on this video. I spent a lot of time with my maternal grandmother and she played music from the 20's and 30's. Introduced me to talent like Sophie Tucker and Louise Brooks. I had learned all about Fanny Bryce long before the movie "Funny Girl " came out. I love this music you have on here. Keep doing the best.
