I've said it before, and I will continue to say it. Kiryu is not human; he's like a Kryptonian or something. Nobody can take that kind of abuse and then have a bossfight afterward and still survive.

7:20:02 I definitely have split opinions on this game, so I'm not surprised the fanbase as a whole would be split on it. I think it's basically a matter of timing and expectations For one, I think the story is told extremely well (it's basically a copy of Yakuza 3's story premise with all the pacing issues fixed and a more coherent theme). But I think a big part of the rift in the fanbase will come from when you played it. (Spoiler below - but I'll keep it as non-specific as possible, and besides, you'll already know this if you've seen *literally anything* from LaD 8 or LaD Gaiden, like even just having seen who the main characters are) For newer players, this is just a great story *towards* the end of Kiryu's story in the series. But for those of us who played the game around its release, this really wasn't the story we needed at the time. For those unaware, leading up to its release this game was presented as Kiryu's *final* game in the series - the end of his saga. With that premise, this wasn't the time to introduce an entirely new cast of supporting characters, while leaving Majima, Daigo and Saejima with basically cameo-levels of screentime. And Haruka's biggest piece of character development (becoming a mom) happens entirely off-screen. And this is probably the only game in the series where the antagonists don't feel human - They're just villains doing evil for the sake of evil (Sugai especially). They're so far removed from what we've come to expect about the series' antagonists. And then there's the atmostphere. Most games in the series manage tone extremely well - providing both ups and downs all throughout the game to keep the player from feeling overwhelmed. Yakuza 6 on the other hand is just a pretty gloomy game all throughout (especially for those of us playing it at the time who thought it was the saga's finale, and therefore had an inherent sense of dread going into it). After Haruka's accident near the start of the game, it's like there's a giant dark cloud hanging over the game's atmosphere, and it honestly feels kinda suffocating - and it never really lets up. And to top it off, the game's main side activity (the bar in Onomichi) also has a kind of low-key, even somewhat somber tone overall (far removed from the vibes of stuff like Cabaret Club Management, Sodachi's Dojo or Haruka's idol activities). All these things make for a mostly fine change of pace for a game in the middle of the series - but it just wasn't the fitting end-point for the series we were looking for at the time of release. And if it was still the end point, that's probably still how I'd feel to this day On the other hand, the characters, storytelling, presentation, music and set pieces are some of the best stuff in the series. All substories being voiced is really cool, and Ono Michio is also one of the best set of substories in the series IMO. It also has probably the best Karaoke selection in the series too imo (only competition being Y5 if you ask me), and Spearfishing was a lot of fun. But despite all the good stuff the game has, I can't help but hold on to a tiny fraction of the resentment I felt for it at release (for all the above reasons), even if it's significantly lessening over time (which it is). And I'm not surprised if others have an even harder time letting go of that initial experience too. So for my part, I suspect that's why the game's still a bit controversial. I wouldn't be surprised if it's seen as progressively less controversial over time though

Interesting take, especially about the timing, I can definitely see where you're coming from. It varies massively from what I felt when I first played it though. Even knowing this is Kiryu's last game, I truly didn't care that we got a new cast of characters BECAUSE the new cast was so strong and spot on. I absolutely loved the Hirose boys (Matsunaga but especially Tagashira could've used some more work), Someya and even the piece of shit villains. The only one that felt rather one dimensional was Sugai, so we're in agreement there. Though overall, I'd say the others were done from relatively to even extremely well. Someya is the obvious highlight and my favorite, Joon-Gi was iconic, Iwami with Kurusu and Big Lo with Yuta clearly fall under the child/parent theme of the game, so idk, to me they all felt like classic, but better RGG writing. But this all falls under my own schizo way of splitting up the series as pre-Yakuza 0 and post-Yakuza 0, where the writing POST Y0 felt significantly tighter with its dialogue, themes and overall plot cohesion. And Yakuza 6 was the first example of that. I'm still willing to die on the hill that this is the best visually presented and best told story in the series, rivaling even Yakuza 0. I also didn't mind Daigo, Majima, Saejima- and hell, even the Morning Glory kids getting sidelined for a solely Kiryu/Haruka focused game. The series started with those two, so I expected it to end the same way. And the nice, juicy symbolism was there: Kiryu protecting another child, but this time even younger and more helpless than Haruka was when they met, Kiryu sacrificing himself for Haruka and Haruto during the finale JUST like Yumi did for them back in Y1, it was all very tastefully executed, in my opinion. I dunno, it all felt really fresh to me, since while it had recognizable beats from the previous stories (Kiryu getting dragged into yet another Tojo / underworld struggle), THIS time it felt like Kiryu was entirely on his own to deal with it all, until he of course met the Hirose Family, which I again saw as an extension of his wishes from the first game (Kiryu was supposed to head up his own family before he took the fall for Nishiki). Having played the entire series, I still go back to Yakuza 6 as my favorite iteration of Kiryu as a character. People always harp on about how he was at his scariest and most brutal in Yakuza 5, but they seemingly forget how Kiryu wanted to straight up murder Joon-Gi Han, Iwami and Sugai near the end of the game. He was at his scariest, and most cornered in this game and it was a side of him that I really grew to enjoy entirely because he's never like this, or at least he hasn't been since 0. So yeah, wall of text, but in my opinion this is the strongest Kiryu has been as a character up until this point in the series because of how he had been pushed to his limits. And the ending absolutely solidifies how I feel, with Kiryu for the first time taking responsibility for how he pushed his problems onto Daigo. As for your comment about the atmosphere, I couldn't disagree more. Sure, the main narrative with Haruka being comatose, Kiryu slowly losing it and everyone gunning for you? It all feels very grim, but literally everything else around and within the plot happens to be very uplifting. The slapstick Hirose shenanigans, Haruto moments, especially the substories with Ono Michio, Haruka's fan, the sick girl who had to get surgery, Pocket Circuit Fighter, etc. In my eyes, Onomichi is the most homely setting we've gotten besides Yakuza 3, and it gives me major Persona 4 vibes, if I had to compare it to something. So all in all, while I do understand your and many others' point of view, it seems like I had the exact opposite reaction to everything LMAO, it exceeded my personal expectations. This truly is Peakuza 6: The Song of Peak.

It probably was that way because the author (or someone i forgot who, that was in charge) had cancer and thought he might died so this was actually his last game... But then he overcome it and we had the next games too so... It might be that why this feels so gloomy

Reminds me of how dmc was viewed as having killed the main Devil May Cry series and hated for it and everyone just kept reposting the infamous "fuck you" scene to represent the entire game as garbage, while reception seemed to have become a bit more positive as its own thing once DMCV happened and I've heard more people say it's a pretty decently fun separate game and they'd be ok with a sequel.

Finally caught up with these vods too! I'm glad you enjoyed one of my favorite Yakuza games as much as I do :) Although... Maybe you're already dead set on your next game being Y7, but I gotta join the sentiment of playing Judgment first. It's WAY more fitting to take the small narrative detour from the mainline Yakuza games. Imo it would be weirder to 'go back in time' after you finish up IW.
