It's a great story of how your grandfather would smash his mandolins if they got out of tune. I loved the way Charlie told it . "If it got out of tune , he would throw the mandolin however far it was to the back of the stage , then he would run after it and get in the middle of it ......with his feet " Many Geniuses have an odd side to their character , he was just a perfectionist and he was certainly a genius. I often wonder how many more great country standards would have been written had he lived as long as Charlie . They will both always be remembered as long as humans live on planet earth.

@@WildPhotoShooter Well he had a woodworking shop at his home and loved to work with wood ,building furniture, nick knacks and musical instruments out of wood as well as doing some very detailed inlay work on various things.I figure had he lived longer he would have either become a preacher or a luthier/furnirure maker or all three.

The Louvin Brothers are one of my very favorite country groups. I just love their harmony. I'm a guitar player and I always wish I could find someone with that high tenor voice so I could sing songs they did so well. I'll never forget when I first heard this song. It was on a cd that my grandma had. As soon as I heard that great mandolin playing of Ira's and his high tenor and Charlie's smooth lead voice, I had to figure out who these guys were. I have a lot of their music. You just can't beat it.

The way Ira comes in with just the last word of certain sentences, totally knocks me out.!! Their counterpoint Melody/ Harmony is truly amazing, though I had an older video of them singing this song, in Black and White, and the harmonies were more Spot On. Ira seems subdued here, which was probably good for his personal life ,but not necessarily for his music ! For some reason THEY took the ones I had off my Favorites, and put different ones on.THEY can't fool me though!!!!

Love the Louvins and the Everlys for their amazing harmonies and talent, but the Everlys weren't much influenced by the Louvins (except maybe for releasing "Songs Our Daddy Taught Us," which was a colllection of traditional Appalachian folk music much like the Louvins' "Tragic Songs of Life"). They were contemporaries of Ira and Charlie and were also singing their traditional harmonies from childhood with their parents at the same time the Louvins were.

A series filmed by Al Gannaway from 1954-1956, shot with a 35mm camera, first time ever in color for the Opry stars. Most of these shows were made at Owen Bradley's barn or at his quonset hut, also Vanderbilt University. They had several names, I bought a set that is called "Grand Ole Opry Star's Of The '50s". The Opry had nothing to do with them. June Webb has a blog on Google telling how, when and where they were made. NOTE! June Webb blog has been pulled. But you can go to Google, ask for Al Gannaway shows. Also, ask for Grand Ole Opry Stars of the '50's, many will come up. Released for about 10 years, Jan 1950 into the '60's.
